* The VFL eliminated count backs in 1981. In 1989 they introduced retrospective Brownlows to former losers on count back. Following the VFL lead, it became common practice for other leagues to make these awards retrospective. This was not possible in the GFL which had disbanded in 1973. In these circumstances Alan (Nigger) and Tom (Dusty) Lestrange are recognized as co- winners of the 1946 Trood Award, as is Noel (Noggy) Crosier of the inaugural Fulton Award in the GFL Reserves.
