Waaia wins first premiership (Numurkah Leader Report)
Although the team has played in grand finals, Saturday was the first occasion on which Waaia had won a premiership. There was a great crowd at the match, 140 pounds being taken at the gates.
Both teams lined up prior to the game to see league president, Mr Cyril Pearce, present Mr Roughsedge of Wunghnu with the trophy for the best and fairest player in the league this season.
`Waaia`s feat in winning the premiership will be marked by a Premiership Ball in the Waaia Hall on Friday night.
`Winning the toss, Waaia kicked with the breeze and with good, fast, rugged football soon had Picola on the defensive. R. Broughton and McPherson were combining well to give Waaia a handy lead at the first change 6.9 to 1.3.
`Picola attacked repeatedly in the second term, but hurried kicking and Waaia`s bustling tactics, kept Waaia in front at the long interval. Waaia 6.11 to Picola 4.14.
`In the third term both teams had somewhat eased down the pace but Waaia not to be denied, still forged ahead mainly through their good position play and better backing up. Waaia added 3.2 to Picola`s 1.0.
`The final term was evenly contested with both teams barely able to raise a gallop. Waaia still continued their better team work and ran out winners by four goals. Final scores, Waaia 10.15 to Picola 6.15. Best players ~ Waaia are to congratulated for playing as a team with every player doing his bit. Perhaps A. McPherson, R. Broughton, N. Gilmour, L. Little and F. Saunders stood out a little above the rest. Picola: Lonrigan, D. Limbrick, K. McCann, A. Ballard.
