Bomber dynasty rolls on
PFL Grand Final
By
Kevin Tyler
Waaia Football club celebrated its sixth flag out of seven grand finals following its 16~point win against Deni Rovers in the Picola League grand final on Saturday.
Bomber coach Jon Varcoe was high in his praise for his players after losing nine of last year`s grand final team at the start of the year.
`We showed tremendous character and heart` Varcoe said after the match.
As his teammates embarked on their lap of honor, weary Bomber warhorse Greg Hixon rested his battered body while taking his boots off at the victory podium.
Hixon`s efforts typified that of the Bomber flag assault, playing superbly in the ruck to win the best on the ground medal.
Deni Rovers coach, Shane Gilligan said that his side could not stop the Bomber running players, and their hand ball cut his side to ribbons.
The game was a classic grand final played before a crowd that paid $11,000 dollars to watch two top sides battle for the 1995 flag.
The game started at a tremendous pace with plenty of strength being shown by both sides.
Hixon was getting plenty of early touches for the Bombers while Rob McCartney was taking some big grabs for the Rovers.
Poor kicking for goal was hurting Deni and a late goal by Neil Walker for Waaia after some clever play gave Bombers a five point lead at the first change.
Scores at the break were Waaia 2.3 (15) to Deni Rovers 1.4 (10).
Neither side could gain an early advantage as play resumed for the second quarter, the break neck pace was causing some unforced turnovers. However the Waaia players began to share the ball around, and signs were not good for Deni Rovers.
The gates finally opened for Waaia when Mustafa then Cleeland goaled, then a freak goal from the boundary line by Paul Trimby and the Bombers had raced to a seven goal lead. Deni Rovers fought back and a goal square mark and goal to Barry Fennell cut the leeway and a good team effort to goal again and the Rovers went into the long break trailing 8.5 (53) to 3.3 (22).
At half time Shane Gilligan called on his players for more talk, more run out of the backline and for all players to tighten up, on their defensive play. His plea appeared to have worked, the Rovers snared the first two goals of the quarter to be back in the fight for the flag.
This stung Waaia back into action, and the Bombers peppered the goals, but poor kicking cost them an opportunity of shutting Deni out of the game.
As it was they went into the last change with a four goal lead.
Scores at three quarter time, Waaia 10.10 (70) to Deni Rovers 7.4 (46).
The game was still there for Deni Rovers to win if they were good enough and the stage was set for a classic final quarter.
Both sides battled it out between their respective half back lines as neither side was prepared to give an inch. Telling marks in defence by Greg Hixon stopped several promising Deni Rovers forward thrust. Bomber coach Jon Varcoe was in everything, and finally his work paid off when his side booted the first goal of the quarter giving Waaia a five goal break, but it was not over yet.
The Rovers persistence paid off and they booted two quick goals to be back in it again, but a Glen Ducat goal late in the quarter sealed it for Waaia.
Two more goals, one after the siren and the flag was Waaia`s.
Best players for Waaia were Greg Hixon, Jon Varcoe and Darren Scott, while best for Deni Rovers were Shane Gilligan, Garry Parsons and Craig McCullock.
