RECORD BREAKING WIN TO BOMBERS
Four premierships in a row in the PFL is a record, one which Waaia now holds after they cruised to a comfortable win over Katunga in the grand final on Saturday, the final score being 11.5 to 7.6.
Played at Katunga, the strong westerly winds and occasional showers made conditions difficult but didn`t deter Waaia full forward, Danny Irwin, who booted seven of the 11 goals scored by the winning side.
The first quarter was a non event with only one behind being scored, but it was a tough quarter with both sides refusing to give an inch. Both backlines were in control, although at that stage, Katunga looked to have the edge.
It was in the second quarter that Waaia applied the pressure and slowly drew away. They had more use of the ball and the speedy wingers and forward flankers played havoc. The Katunga forwards had very few chances to score, as the ball seldom came near them except in the final term, although given the opportunity, the Waaia backline held firm.
A 15 point lead at half time looked good for the Bombers in the tough conditions. The third term was all Waaia, kicking 5.1 to the Swans` 1.1.
Irwin, Neil Walker and Jamie Waasdorp set the pace for the Bombers and for Katunga, Phil McLean and Leo Patterson were putting everything into it. Wayne Jackson, Pearce Medal winner, was putting up a good performance but was well covered at all times.
Malcolm Moon dominated all day for Waaia and Scott Waasdorp performed well. Katunga`s Matt Cason was shifted to the forward line but was never given much chance to move.
But the Swans did not give in easily and in the last term threw everything at the Bombers, who probably realised the game was won and slackened off a little. Katunga kicked 5.4 this term and the crowd came to life, hoping for a close finish. Gary Carstensen booted four straight goals but at the other end, Irwin managed another three.
Malcolm Moon was easily the best player on the day, dominating the wing for most of the day and Neil Walker turned in a top performance. Tony Wilson, in the ruck, had a big influence on the game as did Jamie and Scott Waasdorp and, of course, Irwin with seven to his credit, must be mentioned.
For Katunga, McLean played a great game and David Knight turned in a good performance. Patterson, Hutchinson and Brunskill battled all day. It was a great day for Waaia, as they also took out the Reserves premiership, for their third in succession.
It will probably be a long time before this record of four senior premierships in a row and three Seconds will be broken, unless of course Waaia can improve on this by winning another flag next season to make it five in a row.
