Lionel John Wallace
Born - 5th August 1921
Died - 3rd December 1986
WALLACE THE GREAT :
Lionel Wallace, actually commenced his long & distingusihed football career as a 14 year old with the Glenrowan F C in the Tatong / Thoona F A in 1936, before they went into recess at the start of 1939 & World War Two. Lionel then joined Greta F C after they reformed in 1939 and played in the Tatong / Thoona F A for Greta in 1939 & 1940. Unfortunatly Greta F C also went into recess prior to the 1941 season, due to the war and Lionel then played with the Moyhu F C in 1941 in the Ovens & King F L, before the O & K F L went into recess in 1942, 1943 & 1944. In 1942 he joined the Army, before returning to play with Greta F C in 1945 in the O & K F L.
As a centre half-back in two Greta F C premiership teams, Lionel played mainly with Greta between 1939 & 58, Lionel is said to be one of the greatest players in the history of the Ovens and King F L competition.
As a young serviceman during World War II, Wallace reportedly eclipsed Carlton's Bert Deacon, a future Brownlow medallist, in a servicemen's match in Melbourne. "They reckon 'Liney' never gave him a kick," said former Greta player, John Tanner. After Wallace had returned to Greta, 1946 Greta premiership coach, Laurie Nash apparently said the high-marking defender would be the biggest drawcard in the game if he would leave the farm and play in Melbourne.
Lionel's record in the O & K F L - senior B & F Award was quite remarkable, especially after he returned to playing competitive football after World War Two -
-
1941 - Won the O & K F L - B & F - "Ross Trophy" with the Moyhu F C.
-
1946 - Runner up in the O & K F L - B & F - "Harry West Medal" to Milawa's Jock Gardner.
-
1947 - Runner up in the O & K F L - B & F - "Harry West Medal" to Milawa's Jock Gardner again!
-
1948 - Runner up in the O & K F L - B & F - to King Valley's Ian Thomas, which was then called the L Donnelly Medal.
-
1949 - Runner up in the O & K F L - B & F - to Tarrawingee's Jack Sullivan, now called the Bynon Medal, all playing with the Greta FC.
Lionel then played four seasons and 71 games with the Wangaratta Football Club in the Ovens & Murray F L (O&MFL) from 1950 to 1953, playing in there - 1950, 51 & 52 premiership teams, Lionel was 3rd best in 1951 & best on ground in the 1952 O & M F L premierships. He also made the Wangaratta F C - Team of the Century, that was announced on Saturday evening, 5th August 2006. See team below.
Lionel finished 4th in the O&MFL Morris Medal in 1951 with 13 votes.
Lionel was best on ground in both the 1946 & 1954 O & K F L Greta Premiership Grand Finals & won the Greta F C best & fairest in - 1947, 48, 49, 54, 55, 56 & 57 !
Lionel is a life member of both Greta & Wangaratta F C's.
Lionel served in the Army during World War 2 from 1942 to 1945. See link below.
