2017
There was a huge crowd at Boort for the 2017 Grand Finals and all are aware that we had 9 teams playing for premierships. A remarkable effort with Wedderburn continuing as a powerhouse in the North Central Football League.
The now famous “ Red Hot Saveloys” song was played 9 times before matches and 5 times at the end with the Reserves, A Grade Netball, B Grade Netball, C Grade Netball and U 16A Netball winning Premierships. Walking a lap of the oval many comments of “not again” were heard as our song which has even been sung by Greg Champion on the Saturday morning Coodabeens blasted out time and time again.
A Bit of Theme Song History:
For those that do not know or have forgotten Wedderburn or the Burners from years ago did not really have an identity as we now have with our quaint theme song and the resurrection of the red and black spiders with the gutsy “Redbacks” logo. Recollections of a theme song are pretty vague until a tow truck driver by the name of John O’Malley arrived in town from Werribee in the early 60’s. John was a very lively character and played in the twos. Wedderburn were moving into a successful era with Bobby Wenn taking us to finals and then John Plim’s team winning a flag in 1968. The song John brought up from Werribee was thrust upon us and the building euphoria saw it quickly accepted. The catch cry at the end for possibly good reason has been dropped but Bobby Steel, Roger Paterson and Trevor Kirk from the 68 team who were there on Saturday will remember it well therefore it deserves to be mentioned. Please try and fathom living not far from the Mallee and screaming this after the song and I mean screaming.
Q. What do we sleep on? All yell “Seaweed”.
Q. What do eat ? All yell “Fish”
Q. How do eat them? All yell “Alive”.
Unbelievable, John O’Malley, thanks for Saveloys, Seaweed and Fish!
Footnote: In the 70’s a serious effort was made to change what was thought to be perhaps a ridiculous and embarrassing song with the Richmond Tigers song selected to replace the Saveloys. Wilma Andrews on piano and Old Snaff Andrews on drums played it at after match functions. Young Snaff the draftsman had produced quality flyers for all to join in but maybe the influence of too many Essendon and Collingwood tragics saw it die a slow death. The rest they say is history and the song is now legendary. At a recent final at Donald when two Redback players collided independent spectators were heard to yell “two saveloys down”.
Back to the celebrations where a huge crowd packed the Clubrooms where all players on the day were presented and loudly applauded. Many have had success before but young Cam Last a key figure in the Reserves win was ecstatic with his first ever flag as was C Grade Goal Keeper Olivia Holbert who was still super excited days later in her part time job at Randal’s.
Tom Nesbit got into the DJ’s ear and after a short speech thanking the Neil Diamond empire the music commenced with well worn classic Sweet Caroline. Tempers have been tested over the years with RA Steel warning Tommy not to play it for the 3rd time at functions but the crowd embraced this Premiership night rendition with gusto with young and old standing on tables to belt out this oldie. They never slowed down and partied long into the night.
Go Redbacks.
Dynamic Reserves Coach Shaun “Polka” Polkinghorne.
Reserves
The ultimate goal for any sporting team is to be a participant on grand final day. The Redbacks and the Demons contested the 2017 NCFL Reserves Grand Final after going through the necessary preliminaries to get there.
With the stakes being so high teams often take time to settle with attack on the football and the contest going up a notch or two compared any other games.
The Redbacks kicked with the breeze first with play being a little scrambly early. The Demons, hard at the contest and with their experience a telling factor were gaining early ascendancy and goals to Danny Arnold and Luke Hoskin had the younger Redbacks under some pressure. Jezza Dixon at half forward for the Demons led up well and was causing some concern to the Redbacks as he found space to move.
Josh White in the ruck for the Demons was giving his teammates plenty as years of finals experience came to the fore. Tom Trewin ran hard from full back and thwarted early Redback forays forward.
Oscar Holt was a standout for the Redbacks on a wing. His running was crucial not only in the first term but all game for the Redbacks. Strong marks were also a feature of his first term as he hauled in a good half dozen most being very timely to hold up the Demons when it looked like they may have been able to increase pressure and take greater control of the game.
The early loss of Owen Lockhart from full back through injury saw Cam
Steel move to the key defence post where his strength was to be important for the remainder of the first half.
Louis Holt on a wing used his ample pace to keep the Redbacks in the game, Ash Younghusband was strong on ball, Brodie Keller and Shaun Polkinghorne held tight in defence while Cam Last also showed out with his fleetness of foot.
A late goal to Sam Johnston relieved a little pressure for the Redbacks as the Demons led by eight points at quarter time.
The second quarter saw the Demons start in similar vein to the first, plenty of pressure, forcing the ball forward and keeping the Redback defence busy. Josh White continued to give the Demons drive from the ruck receiving good support from Ned Martin andAaron Noonan. However the Redback defence was up to the task with everyone of the back six holding up under the Demons efforts to convert forward opportunities. Brodie Keller, Cam Steel and Tim Leahy worked hard across the full back line while Sam Carroll, Matt Lockhart and Shaun Polkinghorne were strong across half back as the Demons attacked frequently but could not find the goals.
The Redbacks were finding their feet and settling into their running game. An early goal to Jesse Douglas and a little later two to Luke Holt gave the Redbacks a small lead but a goal to Danny Harrison right on the half time siren kept the Demons in the game as the Wedderburn youngsters led by two points.
Luke, Oscar and Louis Holt had found a lot of the football in this term as the Redbacks ball use picked up considerably. Anthony Smith at half forward fought hard against strong bodies.
The Demons had been inaccurate around the goals, one goal three to the Redbacks three goals one told the story.
The third quarter saw a total transformation to the game. The Redback mosquito fleet clicked into gear, their season defining run and carry, effective ball use and teaming together returned in a rush. Joshua Botheras and Rhordan Holt used their ample pace to get the ball forward where a Sam Johnston goal set the scene for an unbelievable quarter of constant running football which bore great results. A Jesse Douglas classic pack roving goal set the scene for a further onslaught on the goals. Sam Johnston kicked three more with clever basketball like skills at times with further additions by Rhordan Holt and Jeshua Botheras.
Wyche-Narraport had no answer to the Redbacks running game and could not stem the flow. Try as they might Josh White, Jordan Bish, Jason Coles, Danny Harrison and Luke Hoskin could not reel the Redbacks in.
The pace of the Holts, Louis, Rhordan and Oscar, Jesse Douglas and Joshua Botheras, the effective kicking of Luke Holt, the goal sense of Sam Johnston, the strength and great handball skills of Ash Younghusband along with the doggedness of a determined defence led by coach Shaun Polkinghorne and captain Sam Carroll all came together as one and the result was an incredible seven goal to nil term.
Alex Balnaves at centre half forward provided a strong marking target at centre half forward and he had saved his best form for grand final day.
The final quarter was to be a near carbon copy of the third with the Redbacks piling on a further six goals to the Demons one by Danny Harrison. The Redback running brigade continued to feature in the goals with Rhordan Holt two, Cam Last, Jeshua Botheras, Oscar Holt and Ash Younghusb adding to the tally.
Mitch Stephenson rucked all day, never stopped trying and battled hard against a very experienced and talented opponent in Josh White.
A thirteen goals to one second half told the story as the Redbacks recorded a runaway victory with a brand of football that had held them in good stead all season. Young legs combined with loads of enthusiasm and ample skill all came together to produce the desired result on the big day.
The final score of Wedderburn 17-8-110 Wyche- Narraport 4-8-32 was not one many envisaged at half time.
A team effort by the Redbacks where each player made an effective contribution to the overall result.
Goals: Wedderburn: Sam Johnston 5, Rhordan Holt 3, Jeshua Botheras, Jesse Douglas, Luke Holt, 2 Cam Last, Oscar Holt and Ash Younghusband 1.

NCFL Scoreboard
A Grade had a nail biter with the difference only being a single 1 goal with 5 minutes of play to go, the foot was then put down to get a run of goals to win by 7 to defeat the Lakers (SLNT) 47 to 40. Best on court awarded to Meg Lockhart.
The B Grade jumped out of the blocks early against Donald to hold a convincing lead where they were able to extend on this each quarter to finish with a great win by almost 40 goals, 62 to 25. Deanne Caserta was awarded best on court.
In the C Grade Wedderburn 40 defeated Boort 21! Best on court Bianca Winslade.
The 16A won by 3 after being down by 1 goal at three quarter time! What a nail biter it was! Wedderburn 28 def Lakers (SLNT) 25. Best on court went to Grace Lockhart.
Our Under 16Bs were defeated by Birchip-Watchem 35 to 19.
The Under 13s went down in a tough hard fight by 3 goals, Wedderburn 20 defeated by Donald 23.
Many great photos were captured on the day and this one featuring A Grade Netballer Nikki Lockhart in full flight is a ripper.
Well the 2017 season is done and dusted and whilst we were very fortunate to have both the Women's and Men's teams in the Grand Final unfortunately both teams lost 4-2 to Boort and St Arnaud respectively.
The women's game was incredibly close and held at 0-0 at half time, unfortunately Boort got 3 goals and a penalty stroke. Wedderburn held on though and came back with 2 goals from pure determination. Whilst the score line didn't go in our favor, the Women's team has made history in 2017 by making the grand final for the first time in 26 years! Club legend Leon Holt has tried his hand at just about everything and was hockey coach back then. A great year for Women’s hockey with the future looking bright.
The men's team was fast paced and at times a little rough but it was a hotly contested game with both teams eager to win the premiership. St Arnaud scored 4 goals and Wedderburn scoring a goal and from a penalty stroke. Again, whilst the score line didn't go in our favor our Men's team has done an incredible job and have every reason to be proud of themselves. Special mention to Whatto (Dale Jackson) for winning Best On Ground in the men's final!

Prelim Finals
Wedderburn had 3 Hockey Teams and the Under 16B Netball Team playing in Preliminary Finals last Saturday. Wins to the Mens and Womens Hockey and the Netballers will see our small town in an incredible 9 Grand Finals next Saturday at Boort. The Under Age Hockey’s season has unfortunately come to an end. Many will remember the Wedderburn Women’s Hockey Team playing at the High School years ago and we congratulate them on making the Grand Final. Get behind them next Saturday as they have not been in this position for 27 years and have not won the big one for 35 years. See the Hockey Report for results and their 2017 Awards.
Make sure you put in the effort and travel to Boort to support all of our Teams. We are in every Grade of Netball whereby we are often spoilt with success but this is surely another amazing achievement. Good Luck girls.
Coach, Shaun Polkinghornes young Reserves Team play some inspiring football and with King Lockhart as the mastermind in the Coaches Box we are hoping to give the “Saveloys” one more burst.
The Reserves and A Grade Netball will be on at the same time but with only the Trotting Track in between and the Hockey not much further away there will be plenty of Redback voice to be shared.
President Alan Holt has made special mention in this week’s “Football Recorder” of our tireless volunteers and on behalf of all readers of this Newsletter we thank you for your sensational efforts. Some must be heading for second and third Life Memberships. Retiring Premiership player Hayden Polglase made special mention of the meals made available to players and supporters after training and on Saturdays, recruiters are watching finals matches in other Leagues and at Sea Lake on 2nd Semi weekend I saw a 6’5” Senior Ruckman being a Waterboy in the Reserves. Thank You all.
On Saturday Night from 6pm we will hopefully be celebrating big time in the Wedderburn Football Clubrooms. Meals will be available at 7.30pm and music will follow later.
Go Redbacks.
Woohoo, the junior B have completed our grand final stage beating Sea Lake today 34 to 24. This is the third year in a row that we have all 6 netball sides in the grand final!
Next week we play at Boort.
13A vs Donald, 16B vs Birchip/Watchem, 16A vs Sea Lake, A Grade vs Sea Lake, B Grade vs Donald & C Grade vs Boort.
Congratulations also to the women's & men's hockey teams also getting into next week GF with hard fought wins today, bad luck to the underage who lost. A big day next Saturday with 9 sides representing the Redbacks. Get along & bring your cheering voices & streamers & show your support to all our teams. Saturday night a celebration will be had back at the football rooms with a catered meal & entertainment to celebrate this seasons success for all three codes of sport.
Preliminary finals are always tough, and Saturday was no exception! Wedderburn had all 3 teams, Underage, Women's and Men's playing for their spot in the Grand Final!
The Underage team played first against a fierce Birchip-Watchem side! It was a very tough game from the start with both teams fighting hard to get a goal! Unfortunately for us, Birchip scored first and held the score at 1-0 at full time! Whilst we will not retain the premiership this season, our team played incredible all year!
The women's game was next against a strong Charlton side! It was a fast game with a lot of skill shown! We were unfortunate to have a stroke called against us, our first all season but the women's team brought it home 2-1 in an incredibly intense last couple of minutes to go the the Grand Final next week against Boort. It is the first time in 27 years the women have made the Grand Final, and 35 since they won a Grand Final!
The men's team played last against Boort and it was easily the most tense and hard fought game of the season so far! In a game where it was goal for goal, and incredibly fast paced, the score at full time was 4-4! This brought in golden goal extra time, where neither team scored bringing on an 8 second shootout! With the entire crowd lining the field cheering on both sides, Wedderburn were victorious and move to the Grand Final against St Arnaud next week!
With 9 Wedderburn Teams in the Grand Final let's all get amongst it and head to Boort next week to support the Mighty Redbacks!

Second Semi Finals
It was a longer drive than most would have liked but the Sea Lake Sports Centre was well set up for the 2nd Semi Finals. Canola crops in full bloom provided a spectacular backdrop to the football ground. Million dollar paddocks was the whisper but no Pubs have survived to tempt you to spend some of your hard earned. A number of southern tourists visited the Lake before they made the long trip home with many others calling in on the popular Watering Holes along the route. Deano Jackson was stuck in Berriwillock for some time thanking D. K. Weir for that Prince of Penzance trifecta he collected on. He drank his pockets empty in memory of that famous Melbourne Cup Day and early in the night he had to call it quits.
It was a remarkable effort by the Wedderburn Football, Netball and Hockey Clubs with an incredible 10 teams out of a possible 13 representing the Town on the day. Six teams went through to the Grand Finals with the young Redback Reserves withstanding a lot of physical pressure from some older and much bigger St Arnaud opponents. One game to go boys where your superior skills and exuberant enthusiasm will give you a great chance of winning the big one. Five Netball Teams also advanced to the Grand Final but the 3 Hockey teams and the Under 16B Netballers will have to work their way through Prelim Finals at Charlton next weekend.
On Saturday night the Seniors and Reserves held their Best and Fairest counts at the Clubrooms. Five time Premiership “gun” Ben DeAraugo capped off a stellar year by winning the Senior Best and Fairest, the Wedderburn Hotel Sponsored Vote Award and the prestigious MVP Award as voted by his peers, the Senior players after each game. Runner Up to Ben was Five time Premiership Teammate Adam Postle who had a sensational year at Full Back.
The Netball Awards along with other Football trophy winners are included further down in the newsletter but a special mention to the Clubs most eligible bachelor Andrew Brett who won the NCFL Reserves Best and Fairest for the second time and the Club Best and Fairest. Andrew was keen to have a picture with proud parents Leanne and Peter Brett.
President Alan Holt presided over a splendid night and announced that popular local star Danny Benaim would continue as coach in 2018. Danny spoke well in response and presented an enthusiastic vision for next season.
It was a great night with BOG surely going to Will Holt for his Dusty Martin impersonation complete with sleeves of tatts including that shaky Maori tribal neck job. But who cares.
Bretty with proud Parents
Reserves
The North Central second semi final was a contest viewed with some expectation by football followers. Could the Wedderburn Redbacks do what they had been unable to in two previous clashes with the Saints, win.
A tight eighty minute contest realised what Wedderburn supporters were hoping for, a well earned victory by a youthful and enthusiastic group who have competed well all season and which now has a huge assignment awaiting them in two weeks.
The Saints were on the move early as an early first term mark close to goal saw Simon Elliott register his, St Arnaud's and the game's first goal. An early triple header. However the Saints early triumph turned into somewhat of a drought for the remainder of the term as the Redbacks found their feet and started to move the ball around with their younger brigade featuring in plenty of play managing to add three goals. A tally which could have been greater with a little more steadiness around the goals.
Joshua Botheras was a dangerous forward for the Redbacks as he kicked two first quarter goals and was causing the Saints some bother while Anthony Smith chipped in with a third which saw the Redbacks lead by 15 points at quarter time.
The Redbacks with youth and pace their strongpoint’s were well served by the Holt brothers Louis and Oscar on the wings where they led their opponents a merry dance. Mitch Stephenson in the ruck had started well and Cam Last late in the quarter used his pace to cover a large area of the expanses of the Sea Lake oval. The tackling pressure of the Redbacks had held them in good stead in a bright start to the game. The Saints had good performers in Kenny Flanagan at half back who was to be a strong contributor all day, Simon Elliott forward along with Hayden Torney and Chris Medlyn.
The second quarter saw the Redbacks running game lift a little and help them extend their lead at half time ever so slightly. A light rain shower made conditions greasy and this saw a few players struggle to remain vertical at vital times. Redback goals to Rhordan Holt , Ash Younghusband and Jesse Douglas were the result of good ball movement and continued pressure on their opponents. The Saints were up to the task with two of their own through Daniel Needs and Jimmy Chloe. A fairly even term where kicking skills started to deteriorate due to the conditions and both sides keeping pressure on the kicker. The Redbacks half back line of Shaun Polkinghorne, Cam Steel and Sam Carroll held firm, spoiled well and repelled the Saints repeatedly. The Holts, Oscar and Louis maintained their form and Brodie Keller was good on the last line of defence. Kenny Flanagan continued to play well for the Saints as Toby Pickthall, Luke Ezard , Jimmy Chloe and Leetyn McKenzie all came under notice.
The second half saw the continuation of defences being able to restrict goalscoring. The Saints however were able to outscore the Redbacks three goals to two as they chipped away at the Wedderburn lead. Sam Johnston and Luke Holt found the goals for the Redbacks while Daniel Needs and Zane Bigmore twice added the Saints goals. The Saints defence had lifted and were holding the Redbacks out while at the other end the Redbacks defence was working overtime to restrict the Saints forward entries.
For the Redbacks Rhordan Holt's pace was instrumental in getting the ball forward where Jesse Douglas, another fleet footed operator was proving elusive. Cam Steel and Brodie Keller and Matt Lockhart continued their good defensive work. While for the Saints Toby Pickthall and Jimmy Coloe kept pushing forward and Rob Elliott and Kenny Flanagan were strong in pack situations.
The final quarter proved to be a dour struggle. Both sides were guilty of ordinary disposal, poor delivery into their respective forward lines and overall, providing spectators with an average spectacle. Put it down to a lot of legs tiring after a long session on the spacious Sea Lake oval. The Redbacks couldn't find the goals while the Saints through Zane Bigmore kicked one. Andrew Brett saved his best until last for the Redbacks as he took a number of timely marks to cut off clearances the Saints were able to effect out of their backline.
The Redback defence continued to stand up, as well with Cam Steel, Sam Carroll and Matt Lockhart carrying out very effective spoiling tactics until the very end. They were able to spoil most marking attempts by Saint forwards.
Previous clashes between the Saints and the Redbacks this season had seen the Saints victorious. The Wedderburn boys would be pleased to get over this hurdle and look forward to their next game in two weeks.

A Grade Game: Wedderburn V Sea Lake
It was great to have Shelly DeAraugo back playing her first game since breaking her collarbone. She started in Wing Attack, thus avoiding the goal post where she came off second best after the last trip up the Calder. The Lockhart sisters teamed up in goals to cover. Rain started falling which slowed the contest down slightly and brought out the smell of the canola crops. There were a few missed passes from both sides with the customary first quarter jitters. Nakia Nunn the NCNA Best & Fairest playing in Goal Shooter for Sea Lake started out strongly. It was a tight first quarter, with Wedderburn just holding their lead. Wedderburn 12-10 quarter time.
In the second quarter Wedderburn took control of the game in a big way and jumped out to a good lead. Wedderburn scored 12 goals in a row at one point. Laurel Prowse hit her straps in Centre and Maddi Holt playing Goal Defence took a few nice intercepts across half back.
Wedderburn maintained a healthy 13 goal lead at 3 quarter time and absolutely ran away with it in the fourth quarter, with the Lockhart sisters proving their worth in goals. Shelly was content staying at Wing Attack! Wedderburn finish 22 goal winners, with all players contributing and playing their role well. Great job ladies!
Steady shooting by Meg Lockhart in the wet with sister Nikki blocking out.

Rnd 16 Wedderburn V Donald
Saturdays game at Donald saw the final game of one of our six immortals who played in 5 Premierships in 8 years. It was announced on Thursday night that Hayden “H” Polglase would be retiring at the end of the season. Hayden has had an incredibly successful career and has been an elite footballer.
Hayden played his junior football with the South Bendigo Under 18s and then joined a mate for a 2 year stint at Calival in the Loddon Valley League. Success was immediate winning successive premierships.
Hayden was eager for more success and agreed to take up the challenge to help in Wedderburn’s quest to break that Premiership drought dating back to 1970. Recruited to Wedderburn in 2005 he played an enormous part in that quest winning the Senior Best and Fairest in the famous Premiership of 2007. There were some gun players that year Gash, Barnes, Benaim, Stenhouse, Postle, DeAraugo , Lockhart, Beard to name a few so something to be extremely proud of “H”.
He represented North Central on 3 occasions in inter league games and was voted Best on Ground in the 2008 campaign against the Yarra Valley Football League.
A small hiccup saw him spend a year at Marong and Castlemaine but coming to his senses returned to Wedderburn where he played in the 4 Premierships in a row from 2011-14. Hayden played 245 senior games with 175 of them at Wedderburn. After a serious knee injury in 2015 he backed up by finishing Runner up in the 2016 Best and Fairest to Daniel Gash.
In his final game against Donald who were also pumped to win as they were celebrating a 30 year re-union of their 87 flag team saw the Redbacks playing some great football but just falling short by 15 points. Not going out lightly “H” picked up an Incentive Award in his last game.
Hayden was glowing in his comments on the Wedderburn Football, Netball and Hockey Clubs stating that it was outstanding in its support of players driven by a committed group of volunteers. Even something which may seem minor like providing meals after training and on home game days by some very special volunteers created a genuine belonging and community based feeling.
The Wedderburn Football Club and the wider community salutes you Hayden for your incredible contribution.
Hayden getting a final ankle strap from Alex Holt. Impressive was Alex’s split tape technique for the Achilles passed on by Blackie Hewitt.
Next week we host the First Semi Final followed by a huge Second Semi Final day at Sea Lake where we will be represented by the Reserves, 6 Netball Teams and our Hockey Women who finished the season on top of the ladder plus the Mens Hockey as well. A huge day and then back to the Clubrooms for the Senior and Reserves Football Best and Fairest Count.
Seniors
Winning the toss is always important at Donald and they took advantage by kicking to the ever popular Caravan Park end. Missed opportunities saw them with 2g 8p at the first change. Callum Crisp in the ruck and Nathan Holt swooping on anything loose were prominent early.
The second term saw the Redbacks playing some champagne football with Crisp and Holt again dominating. Nathan Holt exploded out of the midfield on countless occasions and was hitting young gun forward Tom Campbell with “lace out passes”. Tom took some very strong marks with Jakes Hayes also presenting well. Cal Crisp and Brad “Tassie” Fryett both snapped miraculous goals which resulted in an excellent quarter with the Redbacks scoring an impressive 5g 5p.
The Redbacks defence was solid with Ben DeAraugo, Adam Postle and Matt Lockhart all keeping their opponents at bay. Rob Tonkin and Jeremy Salinger had worked their way into the game and were providing countless forward opportunities. Jordie Hargreaves took a huge mark and goaled from the square.
The Burn were in with a big chance being only 7 points down at three quarter time and kicking to the scoring end in the last quarter. Donald were determined to win as was the case on our re-union weekend and we gave them a sniff with a slow start to the final quarter.
Tom Campbell and Jake Hayes continued to present well up forward with the Redbacks picking up the pace late in the quarter. Hayden Polglase had a final shot at glory to keep us in with a chance but it wasn’t to be, going down by 15 points.
Nathan Holt and Cal Crisp finished off the season strongly with great games with many other solid performers as already mentioned. With the young Reserves Team on top of the ladder the Redbacks will be looking to returning as a major force in 2018.

In what was our last big hit out before finals, the reserves started very confident against Donald.
Luke Holt had plenty of the ball early in the game, kicking 4 first half goals. There was plenty of run out of the backline all day, with returning back pocket rocket Brodie “Mud Dog” Keller coming back from the seniors and earning a few cuddles from the Mrs after the game. Bailey “Buzz” Brear had a very solid game up forward kicking 4 and taking his tally so far to 20 for the season. The best for the day included Luke Holt, Louis Holt and Ash Younghusband. Get around our twos boys for their finals campaign, Go Redbacks!
Under 16
The Redbacks final game for season 2017 saw them at Goff Letts Oval
Donald where they were like the little boy pushing the barrow; the job was always in front of them but the spirit, enthusiasm and endeavour which has been on display all season did not desert them as they fought the game out to the final siren despite the scoreboard reflecting a decidedly one sided game.
The Royal Blues held sway in the key forward positions as their onballers and running defenders kept pumping the ball into attack and providing numerous opportunities to score.
Sam Lockhart had a busy day in defence with opportunity to
get involved in plenty of contests. Isaac Holt collected numerous possessions in an on-ball role while Tangi Punguika continued his
great form of recent weeks, meeting the ball head on and getting involved in physical contests.
Tyler Douglas across the centre and at half forward made position
well and gave teammates a target to kick to while Dale Kleehammer was strong with his attack on the football and contesting hard whenever the ball was in dispute in his vicinity.
Bayden Lock on a wing ran hard all day, and put in a very encouraging performance to round off he season.
Awards: Wedderburn Fish Shop Isaac Holt, Steel'sButchers Tangi Punguika, Ladies Sam Lockhart, Turf Engineering Tyler Douglas, coaches Dale Kleehammer, Judy and Greg Matthews Brayden Lock.
Under 13s
The littlest Redbacks faced another formidable opponent to round out season 2017. The Royal Blues with an overall physical advantage were able to control the ball for the majority of the game with the determined and ever enthusiastic Redbacks in for every contest.
The Redbacks were well served by Coby Cunningham who was strong whether in defence or having a run on the ball, while Mack Matthews continued his good form of recent weeks with another energetic performance. Robert Way and Flynn Lock were in and under to fight for the contested ball while Dylan Caruana continued to take his form to new levels in his first season of football. Travis Lowe was another to continue his good recent form as he made position well across half forward and fought hard to create team opportunities.
Wedderburn Awards: Wedderburn Fish Shop Coby Cunningham, Drew Ritchie Memorial Mack Matthews, Turf Engineering Robert Way, Burge's Newsagency Flynn Lock, 24 Karat Cafe Dylan Caruana, Jumbo Jackson Memorial Travis Lowe.
Hands up if you cannot believe another home & away season has gone by, 16 rounds have flown past us & the best part about it is we have 6 out of 6 teams playing finals, even better, they all have the double chance & are playing in the second semi in a fortnights time in Sea Lake.
Today we played Donald.
13Bs had another great game, these girls just keep improving & getting better & better, disappointingly that was their last game for 2017 but we look forward to watching them in 2018.

For our last game of the season before finals, we headed over to Donald today for some tough games!
Our Minkey team had an incredible win 6-0 in a game where you could see all of the skills they had been learning all season come into play! Crystal Rose won the award with everyone getting a chocolate!
Our U/13 team had a 3-1 loss in a very tough and fast game! The score line didn't reflect the effort put in by the team! Everyone won a chocolate today!
Underage had a 2-0 win which should keep them in the top 2 going into finals! Again, the score line didn't reflect how hard the team worked and how well they played together. Kelsea won the award with Heath winning the chocolate!
The women had a 1-0 win which keeps them top of the ladder going into finals! The women have now held top of the ladder all season! Today's game was tough and the score doesn't show how many shots at goal we had and how many 'missed it by that much'! Everyone on the team got a chocolate!
The men's team had a 3-1 win which should keep them in the top 2 going into finals! Today's game showed how important communication, passing and team work are! Braydon won the towel with Kev getting the chocolate!
Whilst we wait for the final results from all of today's games across the league, it appears that Underage, Women's and Men's should all be in the Top 2 and playing in Semi Final 2 in two weeks time!
Incredible effort for the Wedderburn Redbacks across all sports going into Finals!!
Well done to everyone for an incredible season! We are proud of each and everyone of our players and members!
Bring on Finals 2017!!

Rnd 15 Wedderburn V Birchip Watchem
A mixed bag of matches against Birchip with our Netballers again dominating and the inform Reserves being tested early.
Many readers of this newsletter follow the Coodabeen Champions on Saturday mornings. It is disappointing that “Sauce” from Sea Lake has gone to ground after mucking up his home game and heading to Donaldson Park on July 22nd, we thought it was funny. Very briefly they did relay a humorous story about the Penguin Football Club in Tasmania who unfortunately are losing there traditional football home of 112 years. Listeners were told of their famous 1977 Premiership which broke a 45 year drought. Celebrations were so heavy that they ran out of beer at 8pm. A quick thinking local with a name never to be forgotten “Dudley Whittle” drove to Burnie in his truck to pick up more supplies to save the day. Who would our Dudley Whittle be?
Our all conquering netballers are often mentioned here and below are featured two sets of sisters who regularly dominate the attacking and defensive ends of the “A” Grade Court. In defence Maddie Holt and Sophie Taylor (Holt) and Meg and Nikki Lockhart in attack. These four fabulous players have very full trophy cabinets.
Sophie and Maddie
Meg and Nikki
All please make sure you come along to the Senior and Reserves Best and Fairest Counts which will be held on Saturday 2nd September in the Clubrooms. Wedderburn will be well represented on this 2nd Semi Final day with more details concerning matches and the night to follow after finals locations are announced this weekend. Wedderburn may be allocated a final depending on Senior results this weekend with 2nd September a possibility.
Seniors
The senior team unfortunately lost Cam Perry to injury this week and although taking it up to Birchip early were unable to match it with this star studded team.
Birchip forward Stephen Paulke a leading goalkicking in a number of Leagues was in unstoppable form kicking 5 goals which could easily have been 10 if he had have kicked straight. Also former Richmond player Nathan Gordon added to our headaches and was a damaging player.
Wedderburn midfield players Nathan Holt, Corey Lowry and Rob Tonkin again played great games and were committed to the contest all day. They battled hard for 4 quarters and were definitely our best. The big fella with the huge mop of hair Josh Wild was also constantly in the thick of it and delivered a mass of heavy spoils as he used great body work to try and stop the hard running Bulls.
Joel Hogan was busy on his wing in the last quarter and Adam Postle kicked 2 goals when moved forward but the Bulls playing great football heading into the finals and had already set up an unbeatable lead. Young gun Matt Lockhart playing his first senior game for months after a broken arm showed great composure on a number of occasions playing in defence against very experienced and talented opposition.
Next week we head to Donald for the final game of the season. The Redbacks snatched a thrilling victory at Donald in Round 1 so let’s hope we give them another dose in the last game for the season.

Wedderburn Reserves match report 12 th August Wedderburn V Birchip
On a breezy afternoon at Donaldson park the Redbacks came up against a competitive Bulls side. A fairly even start saw the Redbacks up by just a point at quarter time. But the Redbacks were not about to be trampled.
After a quarter time rev-up by Coach Shaun Polkinghorne he was able to get a bit more out of the young Redbacks side who afterwards took the game on proving to have too much bite for the bulls.
Joe Lockhart in his promotion to the magoos had a cracking game playing through the midfield and finishing with a goal.
Jesse Douglas provided good support in the forward line to Sam Johnson with the pair booting 2 goals and 3 goals respectively.
Coach Polkinghorne played a solid game in defence rounding up each bull that attacked. Rhordan Holt showed plenty of dash driving the Redbacks into attack time and time again from the midfield while also slotting two majors himself. Andrew Brett also stood out dominating stoppages and hitting targets up the ground.
Keep up the good work lads. Go North Central Footy and UTT (Up The Twos).

In the U16’s game the young Redbacks came out firing in the first quarter kicking the first 3 goals. It was great to see these kids playing with a bit of confidence but the Bulls eventually wore them down.

In the U13’s game our young Redbacks put together some good passages of play and hit the scoreboard which was great to see.

Today one of two of our undefeated teams had their first loss for the year with the 16A's pipped by 1 goal, better now than in the finals girls! Leaving just the A grade as our only undefeated team left, let's hope this stays intact.

Last home& away game next week up at Donald.
Tough day today against Birchip at our last home game for this season! Our teams have done an incredible job this season and we are very proud of everyone!
Our Minkey team lost 2-0 in a very tough game. Everyone worked very well under pressure and everyone was rewarded with a chocolate!
Our U/13 team went down 2-1 but it wasn't for a lack of trying. Everyone played very well together and communicated excellently. The award went to Alex and the chocolate to Aliza!
Our Underage team went down 1-0 in a very tough and fast paced game. Although everyone played well, they weren't able to even the score! No awards were given today!
Our women's team won 3-0 in another fast paced game. Everyone kept a level head and communicated which worked to our advantage. Laura even used her head to the extreme, getting a stick to the forehead! Here's to a speedy recovery! The towel went to Kylie today with Emily, Molly and Kelly (Harry) getting chocolates!
The men's team also won 3-0 against Birchip today. In yet another fast paced game, the men worked together with some great passing and skills to bring the victory home. Today's towel went to Josh with Braydon winning the chocolate!
Next week is the last game before finals! We will be playing an away game at Donald! Game faces on everyone, let's show them what we are made of.
Senior and Reserves Best and Fairest Counts will be on Saturday 2nd September in the Clubrooms. Details to follow after finals fixture announced.
Rnd 14 Wedderburn V Wycheproof Narraport
After a big edition last week it has been a little bit quieter in the Burn this week.
Our Senior football team came back to earth with a thud against top team Wycheproof Narraport but they didn’t slow down our destructive Reserves side or the all conquering Netballers who won all matches. Hockey had a pretty successful day as well.
The weekly "Guest" volunteer Reserves player team Reporter is also creating a bit of a cult following! Don't miss his Report.
Featured below is well known local Vet,Teacher and Farmer Greg Hargreaves about to sample a spicy Cam Steel Butchers Hot Dog. Posing for the photo and helping out in the Canteen this week were MacKenzie Smith, Matt Lockhart, Ash Younghusband, Tim Leahy.
Seniors
They say a week is a long time in football and we certainly received a lesson in that on Saturday. After the euphoria of the huge win on the re-union weekend the Redbacks fronted up to Premiership certainties “the combine” Wycheproof Narraport.
The Wedderburn boys had set themselves for an intense effort against Charlton but the powerful League leaders Wycheproof Narraport capitalised on any minor deficiencies and gave us a football lesson. Their 8 goal second quarter set them up for a big win and they coasted home kicking a further 6 goals in the last quarter.
Big ruckman and forward Callem Crisp worked solidly around the ground and Daniel Gash and Corey Lowry provided a lot of drive but their endeavors were no match for the Demons dominance.
Adam Postle and Ben DeAraugo defended valiantly but the avalanche of goals was too much with Coatsworth and Mead-Harding kicking 5 goals each and Turner chipping in with 4 goals. The ability of these goal kickers to constantly apply scoreboard pressure along with the class of Corey Jones shows why the Premiership race is all but over.
Mention must be made of the good form of young Darcy Jackson after suffering a bad knee strain earlier in the season. Darcy is developing great skills and his consistent footy has him often in our best players and is winning a number of the Club Incentive Awards. Keep it up Darcy.
With only 2 games to go against Birchip and Donald the young Redbacks side supported by their incredibly enthusiastic Reserves team which is on top of the ladder will be trying hard to finish the season on a positive note.
Incentive Awards: Callem Crisp, Adam Postle, Darcy Jackson, Daniel Gash. Wedderburn Hotel Votes: 3 Darcy Jackson, 2 Corey Lowry, 1 Daniel Gash. Turf Towel: Darcy Jackson, Wedderburn Hotel Meal: Callem Crisp, National Hotel Meal: Daniel Gash.
Wedderburn Reserves too strong in cool conditions
The farmer’s in the Wedderburn reserves side had a spring in their step as they ran out to face an older and more physical Wycheproof side on Saturday at Donaldson Park. The dollars had fallen heavily the day before and there was plenty settled around a couple of pockets on the ground. The cooler and wet conditions would provide a new challenge for the young spirited Wedderburn side.
The coach, Shaun Polkinghorne had plenty to say at the start of another important game for the reserve side. With his whiteboard full of plenty of inspiring notes one player was heard to say, ‘We are going to need to get the guy a bigger whiteboard’. ‘Na’ came the reply, ‘I reckon a smaller one, I can’t remember what he said at the start of his speech’.
The Wedderburn side commenced the game where they finished off last week. Rhordan Holt received plenty of possessions in the opening quarter, and with his father waving the flags, he only had to get the ball in the vicinity of the big sticks to get the six points. Even in the wet conditions Rhordan was hard to catch.
Matt Lockhart continued to show his strength and determination around the ground. The young man, proved a headache for the opposition as he was a hard man to bring down. ‘It’s all muscle’ he was heard to say a number of times throughout the day.
The first half of the game was classic Wedderburn reserves football. The team worked together beautifully to notch up a handy lead in the cool conditions. Jeshua ‘you sure it shouldn’t be an o’ Botheras continued to show his excellent form. His quick hands and ability to think through play has given the team plenty of depth.
The third quarter opened with a rejuvenated Wycheproof side, who started to put some points on the scoreboard. The bench in Andrew Lockhart and Liam Ritchie started moving the magnets with gusto and had the runner earning his dollars. Luke Holt was put into centre to kerb the opposition clearances with immediate results. Luke was returning from a stint in the seniors and he showed his innate ability to dodge around the opposition by standing still. He delivered the ball beautifully to his team mates all day.
Owen ‘Bruce Doull’ Lockhart stood up all day against the forward pressure of the Wycheproof side to play his best game of the year. Sporting the head band of his namesake, the boy who is not easily flustered, appeared to have an altercation with an opposition player. It can’t be confirmed if the Wycheproof player may not have tried to steal the Doull head-band.
Wedderburn would end the day with another convincing win. The side who kept Wycheproof scoreless in the last quarter ended with 11 individual goal scorers.
Final Score: Wedderburn 16 – 16 – 112 defeated Wycheproof 6 – 4 – 40.
Best Players for Wedderburn: A. Balnaves, J. Botheras, Luke Holt. S. Polkinghorne, R. Holt
Incentive Awards: Alex Balnaves, Jeshua Botheras, Bendigo Bank Votes: 3 Matt Lockhart, 2 Luke Holt, 1 Sam Johnstone. Turf Towel: Owen Lockhart, Wedderburn Hotel Meal: Matt Lockhart, Mountjoy Wool Coaches Award: Ash Younghusband. Tasco Fuel Award: Jeshua Botheras.

Unfortunately Wycheproof Narraport has less numbers than us and does not have a team.

Cold and wet day today against Wycheproof but we had some solid wins against some tough opponents!
Minkey went down 2-1 but were so close to scoring another goal when the buzzer sounded! The awards went to Travis and Lillian with Violet getting the chocolate!
In the Under game 13 we won 3-0 with Flynn B scoring 2 goals and young Tyson (a Minkey player) scoring a goal! It's incredible to see how fast the young players are progressing! Everyone won the chocolate today!
Underage went down 1-0 against the top of the ladder Wyche! In what was an incredibly tough game Trayden won the award for his great work as goalie with some incredible saves! Rochelle won the chocolate!

Well done as always to all of our Redbacks! Only 2 games left before finals, so there's no time to waste!
Home game next week against Birchip! Trainings as normal but keep an eye on the Facebook page as we will post updates regarding the weather!
Rnd 13 Wedderburn V Charlton
So much news over our terrific Re Union weekend, if you weren't in town then you have missed a great opportunity to catch up with family and friends. Thanks to all who gave the Club their email address over the weekend. Football should never be underestimated in society going by the number of football numbers in email addresses. The idea was to set up a database to keep you informed on great weekends like we have just experienced with this small newsletter also being born.
Friday saw many of you feature in the Golf Club tournament with the fairways in sensational condition. Rohan McHugh who put in a great effort to come back from Perth was in scintillating form according to partner Sam Barnes with the pair recording a great score. Rohan is currently playing A Grade Amateurs in Perth. It was also great that “Rockstar” Barnsey was able to attend due to a “managed hamstring” keeping him out at North Bendigo. Will they start him on the bench this week after their tough discipline stance from last year. Past Feeny Medalist Shayne Ward wasn’t happy with his 67 off the stick and complained that his handicap had drifted from +2 (that’s right add 2 to his score) out to -3. Poor boy!
Big news in town was the Engagement of very popular local couple Maddison Holt and Adam Postle. Their parents were also very excited with the news and we all send them our best wishes.
There were some very inspiring results over the weekend with the Hockey winning all games, Netball winning all games, Reserves winning and Under 16s football recording their first win for the season and all doing their part to set us up for a super day.
The Roger Paterson inspired Woosang Challenge match in the Seniors saw Mal Burge umpire his 600th game. Congratulations Mal. He is hot on the heels of Peter McHugh who is incredibly still going strong with 620 games. Mal was interviewed by the Coodabeen Champions on ABC radio earlier and was extremely pleased that Ian Cover never questioned him about chasing down a streaker in a Mallee League Grand Final. The photo below sees Mal getting a rub down from Dick Stephenson before the big game. Dick had support on the day with legendary Medical Room staff Kevin “Blackie” Hewitt, John Murnane and later Tracy Jackson all in attendance on the day.
The Seniors were either overcome by the occasion or were thinking about the night ahead as the game meandered along until the last quarter when the digit was finally extracted and the Redbacks stormed home.
The Re Union at the Mechanics Institute was well attended with 170 meals served on the night. What an incredible effort by all who helped in the kitchen (and the bar).
President Alan Holt introduced the Coach of the 2007 Senior Team Dean Lockhart who was the MC for the night. Dora is a talented speaker and his preparation and knowledge was very thorough. He listed the incredible successful stats of the Wedderburn Netball Club as he introduced the 2 Premiership netball teams. These amazing results dating back to 1953 will appear in a later addition. Susi Lockhart, Player, Coach and multiple Best and Fairest winner gave us an insight into these winning grand final teams.
The 2 Reserves Premiership Teams were next on stage with new life member Chris Holt taking a position on the couch telling us about the teams having played in the 2005 Team and upon retirement coaching the 2007 Team. The "grey fox" Peter Ramsdale received a plug for kicking 6 goals in the granny at age 44.
Then Dora introduced the drought breaking Senior Premiership Team. He made special mention of his predecessors over the years who had gone so close to attaining the holy grail. Coaches of the calibre of Chris Harrington who had given everything but didn’t achieve the ultimate success. On the couch he made special mention of the marvelous effort and time that Lean Holt had attributed to recruiting after his days as player, coach that went so close and President had ceased. Dean’s highlight from the 2007 Grand Final was Jon Baird’s inspirational run and goal.
There were many others that have helped in the success of the Club so we all retired to the Bar area and consumed plenty of refreshments where stories of you all were discussed as we celebrated the great combatants of our fantastic Club.
Seniors
The Senior game was very uninspiring for 3 quarters and although the Redbacks seemed to have a lot more of the ball than Charlton we massacred it on countless occasions and lost the opportunity to set up a good lead. At half time League CEO Lance “Scobie” Standfield stated that “you could nearly ask for your money back”.
Callum Crisp played mostly in the ruck and gave the Redbacks first use on many occasions with Jordan Hargreaves and Jake Hayes playing as key forwards. Both presented well taking many big grabs with Jake kicking 2 goals. Jordie could have ended up with a good tally but missed a number of shots.
Rob Tonkin and Daniel Gash were solid contributors around the ground and young Joe Lockhart was also playing well. It was a day for future young stars with Brodie Kellar playing his first game and blind turning like a veteran to lose his opponent and kick a goal with his first kick. Young Trent Cossar for Charlton took one of the biggest marks seen for a long time to show his wares. Not to be outdone Oscar Holt with those deceiving long arms took a number of uncanny marks and looks to be a great prospect for the future.
McKee, Judd and A. Walklate were doing their best for the Navies but Charlton did not look threatening either. Ben DeAraugo was as always playing a fine role across half back setting up many forward attacks and Marc Reiffel had been slowly working his way into the game.
It is certain that all were doing their utmost to win but with only 4 g 12 p on the board at 3 quarter time the big crowd marching to the huddle were very nervous.
Modern football has become a game of numbers, systems and team structures but a good old fashioned spray from Coach Danny Benaim at 3 quarter time seemed to do the trick with the Redbacks flicking the switch in the last quarter.
Incredibly Charlton went forward in the opening seconds but missed their chance at goal but then enter Cam Perry. The Navies fear Cam because he can be unstoppable. With tacklers hanging off him this colossus powered towards goal twice in succession with an unmatchable will to win kicking goals at the 2 and 4 minute marks. Momentum is huge in football and once it started for the Redbacks the Navies were powerless to stop it. A point then followed and the re-union boys yelled “ just give it to Perry”.
The last quarter unfolded like this:
- 2 minute mark, goal Cam Perry
- 4 minute mark, goal Cam Perry
- 9 minute mark, goal Rob Tonkin
- 10 minute mark, goal Jordan Hargreaves
- 12 minute mark, goal Marc Reiffel
- 17 minute mark, goal Oscar Holt
- 22 minute mark, goal Nath Holt
- 27 minute mark, goal Daniel Gash
The Redbacks stormed home to kick 8 g 6p in the last quarter to record a 38 point smashing of Charlton.
Presentation after the game of the Woosang Challenge Shield to Captain RobTonkin set the scene for a great night. The Pappos Medal for Best on Ground went to Daniel Gash in another of his classic games. His strength and work in the contest was a game highlight. If Daniel was not clearing the ball from stoppages then he was at the bottom of every pack handing it back to 600 game umpire Mal as he got up.
Incentive Awards: Daniel Gash, Cam Perry, Ben DeAraugo, Callem Crisp. Wedderburn Hotel Award: 3 Robby Tonkin, 2 Daniel Gash, 1 Jeremy Salinger. Turf Towel: Mark Reiffel, Wedderburn Hotel: Meal Brodie Keller, National Hotel Meal: Callem Crisp.
Redback Reserves prove too strong for the Blues.
The Wedderburn reserves went into the game against Charlton as highly placed favourites. Yet the history of games against the northerly neighbours has been keenly watched from the sidelines and always promised to be an interesting clash.
Wedderburn would lose another of its backbone players to the senior side in Brodie ‘mud dog’ Keller. But with the reserves side losing many players to the senior side and yet still winning, the heart of sole of the team still continued to notch up the wins.
It was special weekend for the Redbacks as they were celebrating 10 and 12 year reunion of Senior and Reserve Premierships. So there were plenty of spectators keen to relive past glories and also keen for a kick if the team were short.
Wedderburn didn’t get off to their normal dominating start with a few of the boys sluggish from the first bounce. Once that first goal was ticked off by Rhordan Holt the team started to hit their stride. The General, Shaun Polkinghorne continued to lead by example as he has done all year, putting his body on the line and showing how tough they breed them out the Berrimal way. Andrew Brett successfully tried out his new skill of handballing ‘on more than one’ occasion throughout the game. He dominated in getting the hard ball and driving the ball into space.
Rhordan ‘catch me if you can’ Holt remained elusive as ever. Once he had ball in hand the opposition ended up with sore necks as he spun in and around them to drive the ball either between the sticks or to a presenting team mate. Matthew ‘Pretzel’ Lockhart back from a broken arm and mums home cooking showed good form and gave extra drive from the centre in the later stages of the game.
Louis ‘blonde bombshell’ Holt continued to be handy to the side with his senior experience. With agility and pace he continues to worry the slower opposition from his wing position. Sam ‘give me space’ Johnson dominated the forward line with his presence and kick another bag full for the dominating side. Alex ‘go through’ Balnaves showed strength around the packs and has given the team a strong and tough centre option to drive the ball through, and today’s game was no exception.
Jesse ‘I’m eighteen now’ Douglas put his body on the line on many occasions throughout the game and gave the team that extra spark across the forward line. He had an unfortunate exit in the third quarter after a solid bump on the head but was given all clear by medical staff and free to continue his 18 th birthday celebrations.
The Redbacks “UTT” Reserves ended up keeping the Blues goal less for the game in a dominating team performance.

Under Under16s
The Redbacks went into the game against the Navy Blues with the inclusion of a couple of new recruits for the day and this gave the Wedderburn boys hope that their winless season may come to an end.
Fortunately for all concerned hope turned to reality as four quarters of entertaining football saw the Redbacks register victory number one for 2017.
The inclusion of Jayden Leach and Taj Rodwell lifted Redback enthusiasm and the team played accordingly.
Finn Turnbull was a damaging forward finishing with four goals, Tangi Punguika had a day out in the centre banging the ball forward at every opportunity and then managing to kick three goals in the process.
Trent Jackson and Isaac Holt were able to move freely and both kicked two goals in fine performances. Dale Kleehammer came under notice with his determined efforts to find the football and Jimmy Van de Wetering capped his game by finding the gap between the two big sticks.
A morale boosting day for the Redbacks who now look forward to their remaining games with greater confidence.
Final Scores Wedderburn 15-10-100 Charlton 9-5-59.

Under 13s
The mini Redbacks were confronted by a very competent Charlton outfit
which showed clean skilful ball use throughout the game. Try as they might the Redbacks were unable stop the flow of quick and effective ball use by the Navy Blues who controlled the game from go to whoa.
The Redbacks were well served by but Mack Matthews who was a solid performer all day. Junior Miller was in the action as is his way, Flynn Lock and Coby Cunningham featured in some good passages of play while Travis Lowe and Dylan Caruana continued to show the benefit of experience as their performances improve every week.

Rnd 12 Wedderburn V Sea Lake
Only our second trip to Sea Lake on Saturday and a mixed day it was. For many it is a long drive and half way to a fishing trip but Coodabeen Champion listeners were in for an hilarious treat as they were expecting to see the 1960’s whinging farmer “Sauce from Sea Lake” on the gate at Sea Lake. Too much rain, not enough rain, wife Marlene doesn’t pull her weight and just works in the Canteen and his pathetic son is a lost cause.
Well could you believe it when “Sauce phoned in on his way to the footy he was complaining big time about the long trip down the Calder to Wedderburn (he should be thankful that we let him in and he is not going to Mildura). Anyway the trip was so long that Marlene had to pack the thermos for a pit stop at Teddywaddy. Did we give that deadbeat an earful as we crossed the railway line at Teddywaddy. Plenty of time for it as well as we are only allowed to do 80kph!
Our very popular A Grade netball coach and shooter Shelley DeAraugo unfortunately broke her collarbone when she collided with the goal post on Saturday. We all wish Shelley a speedy recovery.
The well publicised Re-Union and Woosang Challenge match against Charlton is on this weekend so make sure you are in Town.
Woosang resident and legendary North Central umpire Mal Burge has been appointed to officiate in this big match which incredibly will be his 600th game. Congratulations Mal. If in doubt Mal you know what do.
Seniors
The Redbacks got off to a great start and piled on 5 goals in the first quarter kicking with a sound breeze. Nath Holt was up and about early kicking 2 goals in the first. Jeremy Salinger was dominating on the big ground and put in a terrific four quarter effort using his pace and stamina to great advantage. The Sea Lakers kicked 7 goals themselves in the 2nd quarter with the wind to take a 12 point lead into half time. Hayden Polglase was creating great drive in the first half but a hamstring saw him in the hands of trainers for most of the 2nd half.
Rob Tonkin’s persistence saw the Captain come right into the game in the 2nd half but 2 goals 5 points in the third quarter with the breeze was going to make it a tough ask. The Redbacks fought bravely in the last quarter and only 10 points separated the two teams with not much time left. Some cheap goals at the end saw the Lakers win by 28 points but the game was hard fought and could have gone either way.
Corey Lowry was fearless as always and played well while Darcy Jackson and Ben DeAraugo with their superior skills created countless forward opportunities as they turned defence into attack on countless occasions. Jordan Hargreaves continued his good form with a tireless effort in the ruck.
The Redbacks took it right up to the Lakers who are 2nd on the ladder and were close to causing an upset on the Lakers home ground. A great warm up for next week!
Incentive Awards: Jeremy Salinger, Corey Lowry, Darcy Jackson, Nathan Holt. Wedderburn Hotel Award: 3 Ben De Araugo, 2 Corey Lowry, 1 Adam Postle. Turf Towel: Joel Hogan. Wedderburn Hotel Meal: Jordan Hargreaves, National Hotel: Meal Darcy Jackson.
Reserves
After the long trip up to Sea Lake the Redbacks had yet again another promising win. The conditions were not ideal with a strong breeze favouring one end. The Redbacks started off slow kicking into the wind and although the ball was in the Redbacks half for most of the first quarter the fowards struggled to convert.
Kicking with the breeze in the second quarter the Redbacks punished Sea Lake on the score board with an eight goal quarter lead by Sam Johnston at full forward and Rhett Canfield. Jeshua Botheras and Rhordan Holt were very versatile around the ground playing through the middle and up forward and getting plenty of the ball.
Shaun Polkinghorne once again played his tough brand of footy boring in hard for the ball and constantly preventing the ball from entering the Tigers forward line. The Redbacks defence held up strong all day making it very difficult for Sea Lake to score. Sam Carroll and Owen Lockhart were standouts in the back line putting pressure on their opponents and preventing them from getting their hands on the ball.
Ash Younghusband and Andrew Brett were hard at the ball in the midfield all day resulting in many centre clearances while Louis Holt and Cam Last provided plenty of pace out on both wings. Daniel Lansdell King played his first reserves game for the year and also found plenty of the ball.
After a strong last quarter with a couple of quick goals in the first minute the Redbacks walked off with another satisfying win.
Final scores Wedderburn 13-9- 87 Sea Lake 2-4- 16

Rnd 11 Wedderburn V StArnaud
Firstly a huge thank you to the many individuals and local business’s who donated their Goods and Services for our Club auction. A Patisserie could be happening in town going by the delights in the Silent Cake Auction. Also a thanks to our Auctioneers, Leon Holt (2 long necks in a brown paper bag) and Brett “Smash” Douglas from StArnaud for their efforts on the night. A massive effort from organiser Tazz Hayes made this a very successful night.
This week we have a bye followed by the Calder trip to Coodabeen Champions “Sauce” from Sea Lake country.
Over the bye weekend we are hoping to catch up with the legendary six players who played in all five Senior Premierships in eight years after finally breaking through in 2007. I would knight them after this amazing feat or at least change their second names to “5 time”.
Seniors
The Redbacks certainly have been starting well in most games and this certainly continued against the Saints kicking 5 goals in the first quarter. The Saints were held goaless in this quarter with Adam “5 time” Postle having a ripper season. He has has slotted magnificently into full back with Jake DeAraugo out injured. The young Darcy Jackson again played well in defence and his clever skills will see him playing major roles in the future.
The Saints tried hard all day but the Redbacks weren’t about to let this one slip and were relentless for the entire four quarters. Nath Holt lead the way with his consistant 4 quarter effort marking well and great use of the ball. In only his third game Oscar Holt played with poise and showed some very silky skills topped off by kicking 2 goals.
The Saints were held to only 2 goals by three quarter time while the Redbacks continued to hammer the scoreboard although a bit inaccurate finishing the game with 11g 15b to run out 34 point victors.
Tom Campbell was a huge presence across half forward and Callum Crisp was presenting well. A tireless effort again by Jordan Hargreaves in the ruck saw the Redbacks belting out the “Saveloys” after the game (check it out on the WFC facebook page).
Incentive Awards: Adam Postle, Nathan Holt, Oscar Holt, Tom Campbell. Wedderburn Hotel Votes: 3 Tom Campbell, 2 Nathan Holt, 1 Adam Postle. Turf Towel Oscar: Holt. Wedderburn Hotel Meal: Tom Campbell. National Hotel Meal: Nathan Holt.
Reserves
An unlucky day for Wedderburn on Saturday, kicking much the same as Travis Cloke during his time at Collingwood, booting 9 behinds and only 6 goals for the day!
Wedderburn’s best was Louis Holt who is back in the seconds team a stint in the senior side, followed by; A. Younghusband, J. Botheras, S. Polkinghorne, B. Keller, C. Last. We had no multiple goal kickers for the day, but a spread across field. Hopefully the Redbacks can return to winning form in two weeks time against the Tigers!!
Incentive Awards: Louis Holt, Ash Younghusband. Bendigo Bank Votes: 3 Jesse Douglas, 2 Louis Holt, 1 Brodie Keller. Turf Towel: Jesse Douglas. Wedderburn Hotel Meal: Ash Younghusband. Mountjoy Wool Coaches Award : Cam Last. Tasco Fuel Award: Jeshua Botheras.
Wedderburn Under 16 Report
With more players back this week and Hamish Lockhart having a run for us Coby, Gabe and Mack from the U13’s and some players from St Arnaud each team had 17 players.
It was a hard fought game with St Arnaud attacking their goals making our defense work very hard, rotations in the centre to try and force the ball into out attacking half saw everyone involved, Daniel rucked well with Sam and Hamish trying to push the ball forward. Each week everyone is improving on their skills keep up the team work.
Awards: Hamish Lockhart, Daniel Lansdell-King, Sam Lockhart, Finn Turnbull, Trent Jackson, Coby Cunningham
Wedderburn Under 13 Report
School holidays saw the team go from 17 to 12 players, with St Arnaud supplying players to even up the teams everyone took the field, first half saw the going very hard for Wedderburn who were finding it hard to kick goals getting through St Arnaud’s defence. The second half and a shuffle of players from St Arnaud enabled Wedderburn to have some bigger targets and some run in the mid field which saw Gabe Caserta and new player Rowan Webb kick a goal each. Again another great team effort from everyone.
Awards: Gabe Caserta, Coby Cunningham, Tyson Woodman, Mack Matthews, Rowan Webb, Travis Lowe
Last week there were two draws from Bob’s Barrell. 1st Draw $300 Sharyn Lockhart, $200 Les Miller, $100 John Semple, $50 Julie Benaim. 2nd Draw $300 Danny Benaim, $200 Julie Gould, $100 Cam Turnbull, $50 Karen Holt.

The next home game against Charlton on July 29 is the reunion/Woosang Cup Challenge game. There will be a tent on the hill during the football and then we will head to the Hall for a 7.30pm meal.

Rnd 10 Wedderburn V Boort
The Boort footy ground was in great knick last weekend and conditions were ideal for Saturday sport.
The Wedderburn Netball Club must be one of the most successful clubs in Australian sport and again flew the flag for us. Over the years they have made a mockery of Premiership Re-Unions.
Two wins in the Hockey was great and the top of the ladder Reserves held on to win.
Don’t forget our Goods and Services Auction this Saturday 8th July at 7.30. You would have received the listing last week organized by Taz Hayes so come along and have a drink and meal and see if anything tickles your fancy.
Seniors
We again had a very enthusiastic first quarter with Club Awards personal busily jotting down early good performers. Adam Postle was again defending well and we had many busy runners early with Jeremy Salinger, Rob Tonkin and Corey Lowry getting plenty of it. Nath Holt and Brad Fryett were right amongst it as well and Joel Hogan was working his way into the game. Tom Campbell was presenting well at CHF thanks to another Pioneers bye.
After the great first quarter the Redbacks battled hard but Boort’s pressure resulted in players drifting in and out of the game. The umpiring wasn’t up to senior standard resulting in a number of late and head high tackles with a number of Redbacks feeling pretty sore.
Ben DeAraugo played well on the dangerous Tibbett and young ruckmen Jordan Hargreaves and Callum Crisp worked in tandem on gun Feeney Medal winner Orr to counter his brilliance. Daniel Gash again worked extremely hard to keep us in with a chance.
Only 18 points down at three quarter supporters were hopeful that we would find some of that first quarter spark but with Fryett and Hogan unable to come back on the Redbacks couldn’t get up for a much needed win.
Incentive Awards: Adam Postle, Ben DeAraugo, Daniel Gash, Jeremy Salinger. Wedderburn Hotel Award: 3 Daniel Gash, 2 Jeremy Salinger, 1 Hayden Polglase. Turf Towel: Adam Postle. Wedderburn Hotel Meal: Oscar Holt, National Hotel Meal: Joel Hogan.
Reserves
This week it was the top two sides going in for battle. With the return of Owen Lockhart light on his toes from relationship commitments, this strengthened the Redbacks backline. Corey Bowen who was a late inclusion, left nothing in the tank after the warm up. The Redbacks slowly got the wheels turning when Rhordy Holt snagged five goals in the first half to put the boys in good stead. Father Tony had concerns that his 10 goal bag at the now extinct Watchem ground would be matched.
Boort’s inaccurate shots on goal cost them and the Redbacks capitalised on their misfortune. In the third it was a much harder fought game by both sides and Brodie Keller on the back flank was outstanding and always up for the challenge. The movement of Shaq going forward gave him the opportunity to score a goal along with Anthony Smith who was playing like he was 6 foot tall. Buzz was looking a lot more up and about than last Sunday, and gave plenty of opportunities going forward. The magpies came out flying in the last quarter and came within two goals but the Redbacks midfield lifted through Ash Younghusband and steadied the ship for a 21point victory.
Incentive Awards: Rhordy Holt, Ash Younghusband. Bendigo Bank: 3 Rhordy Holt, 2 Ash Younghusband, 1 Jeshua Botheras. Turf Towel: Jeshua Botheras, Wedderburn Hotel Meal: Shaun Polkinghorne. Mountjoy Wool Coaches Award: Brodie Keller, Tasco Fuel Award: Anthony Smith.
Wedderburn Football U16 Report
A tough game this week with a very depleted side due to injury, illness and work commitments the game was played with 15 a side with Boort supplying some players for Wedderburn and Mack, Coby and Gabe all coming up from the Under 13 side.
First half saw Wedderburn having to play a very defensive game with Boort attacking hard and fast, in the centre the pressure was on trying to force the play into Wedderburn’s attacking end.
The last quarter saw Wedderburn kick 5 goals with Sam Lockhart kicking 2, Tangi Punguika 2 and Gabe Caserta 1 and keeping Boort scoreless. Great team work and pressure.
Awards: Sam Lockhart, Bayden Lock, Isaac Holt, Finn Turnbull, Tangi Punguika, Trayden Tonso
Wedderburn Football U13 Report
A very cold frosty morning we travelled to Boort where for the first time this season we were hoping to have 18 players take the field, but due to some illnesses we only started with 16. Warmed up and ready to play the players went in hard and fierce tackling and chasing any loose balls everyone contributing, the defensive end had their work cut out for them.
Again each week the players are continuing to improve on their skills and team work, kicking and marking. With Shayne taking the position of head coach for the next few weeks I’m sure he will continue to develop a very enthusiastic young side.
Awards: Junior Miller, Zac Slide, Coby Cunningham, Mack Matthews, Tyson Woodman, Gabe Caserta

Rnd 9 Wedderburn V Donald
The WFC Ball at the All Seasons in Bendigo was a huge success. Well done Rob Tonkin and Alan Holt for organizing this great night for young and “old”. If you couldn’t make it his year then get on board next year as it is a fabulous opportunity to party and catch up with old friends or teammates.
How good was it to see “Rockstar” Sam Barnes, one of the famous six who played in the 5 senior premierships. After the four in a row at Wedderburn Sam moved down to North Bendigo for family reasons and has played in two more making it six on the trot. Kicked a lazy 10 in the Prelim last year and 7 in the GF to win the Norm Smith as well. If you were there you would have meet his two buddies who were absolute stars as well, Brady Herdman and Brett Strange. Last but not least “goal of his lifetime” snatched from him at Boort, Luke Freeman (Ian Gould has details of the last quarter free kick count). Got that flag though Luke.
Check the Home Page in Upcoming Events for some details of our Goods and Services Auction on Saturday 8th July at 7.30. Taz Hayes has been organizing this great Club night which many clubs have to raise funds from their many generous donors.
Seniors
The Senior team welcomed back Marc Reiffel this week but unfortunately lost “jet” Cam Perry with a hamstring. Congrats to Oscar Holt on playing his first senior game and Luke Holt playing his first for the season. Both boys handled the faster paced game well.
Spectators were frozen by the cold conditions but the Redbacks were sharp early but again after having a lot of the play couldn’t capitalize on the scoreboard (no inside 50 quotes here). Donald did hit the scoreboard but with a pile of points due to great pressure from the Redbacks defence. There were some great match ups around the ground with veteran Ben DeAraugo on ex Carlton player Raso and Nath Holt closely checking Haddow. Adam Postle was a tower of strength in defence taking a massive amount of intercept marks.
Jordan Hargreaves was huge in the ruck and up forward and Rob Tonkin and Jeremy Salinger were running hard giving us great drive all over the ground. Josh Wild took some good grabs up forward but alas only snagged the 1 goal. Tonkin goaled from the square almost putting the ball in the old Salt Dam giving the boundary ump a huge chase. This was inspirational along with the highlight of the game, Ben DeAraugo’s sensational duel with Raso. Points were even at half time but Ben got right on top of him in the second half kicking a team lifting prodigious goal himself.
Only 11 points down at three quarter time had set the scene for a come from behind victory like in the first round clash but unfortunately it wasn’t to be with Donald steadying and running out 25 point victors.
Incentive Awards: Ben DeAraugo, Jeremy Salinger, Adam Postle, Nathan Holt. Wedderburn Hotel Award: 3 Ben DeAraugo, 2 Adam Postle, 1 Jordan Hargreaves. Turf Towel: Brad Holt. Wedderburn Hotel Meal: Jordan Hargreaves National Hotel Meal: Jeremy Salinger.
Reserves
The reserves were back at home this week after back to back away games. With many players unavailable, and Luke and Oscar Holt stepping up to the seniors, the reserves were helped out with a few ring ins who slotted straight into the team worry free. Sam Carroll’s pre game speeches always get the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up and this week was no different. In the first quarter the Redbacks couldn’t convert their opportunities and the chance to take a resounding lead early. Jeshua Botheras was fantastic in his return to the reserves after his stint in the seniors with 4 classy goals. The Redbacks kept Donald scoreless in the second half with a great effort by the back six group including great efforts by Shaun Polkinghorne, Sam Carroll, Brodie Keller and Alex Balnaves. The Redbacks came away with a convincing 81 point percentage boosting win.

Wedderburn Football U13 Report
Home against Donald and the U 13’s we’re close to having a full side on the ground. Again Wedderburn were the smaller side but everyone contributes and fights hard every week.
The improvement in skills and team work continues to grow. It was a very defensive game with everyone tackling and trying to gain possession against a very strong attacking Donald side.
Keep fighting hard boys and working as a team and a win will come.
Awards: Coby Cunningham, Flynn Lock, Cole Hendy, Nathan Crow, Connor Winslett, Junior Miller, Rohan Webb and Tyson Blair.
Wedderburn Football U16 Report
The U 16’s took the field with a very depleted side this week due to injury and illness. With only 10 players we were going to find the going hard but with a top up of players from Donald the game was able to begin and all boys could get into their much loved Saturday sport. The 10 players that we had put everything into the game tackling hard, taking some great marks and producing some good passages of play. There were many positional changes and rotations of players to try and lift the boys by Coach Jordan Hargreaves. Credit to all the players for their effort and not stopping the whole game.
Awards: Sam Lockhart, Isaac Holt, Tyler Douglas, Bayden Lock, Tangi Punguika,
James Van de Wetering
First round against Donald saw us win 2 out of 5 games, today we were able to turn the tables on those 3 losses & win 5 out of 5. Both 16A & A Grade extended their unbeaten status!

Rnd 8 Wedderburn V Birchip Watchem
Seniors
It can be a long trip to Birchip especially for the boys working or studying in Bendigo but the Redbacks took it right up to the second on the ladder Bulls with some very competitive football. Coach Danny Benaim and his still powerhouse assistant Daniel Gash led from the front and had the team working well together. Jeremy Salinger was very lively creating many opportunities and our big guys in Jordan Hargreaves, Callum Crisp and Adam Postle were working hard all over the ground.
Just 7 points down at three quarter time saw us with a big chance for an away upset win but the Bulls kicked 4 goals in the last quarter and held us goalless. Darcy Jackson back from a bad knee strain continues to improve and it was great to see him among our best.
Incentives: Jeremy Salinger, Darcy Jackson, Adam Postle, Jordan Hargreaves. Wedderburn Hotel Award: 3 Jeremy Salinger, 2 Adam Postle, 1 Callum Crisp. Turf Towel: Jeremy Salinger. Wedderburn Hotel Meal: Adam Postle National Hotel Meal: Callum Crisp.
Reserves
After a week off, the Magoos were keen to get up to Birchip and get their pies they forgot to order
earlier in the year! Birchip started off the game like a top four side should, kicking very accurately at
goals compared to the Redbacks who mustn’t have had their tongue out when shooting for goal. The
Bulls gave the ladder leaders a run for their money early on in the piece. With scores level at half
time. Coach, Shaun Polkinghorne gave a classic rev up speech, telling the boys to extract the digit. The
boys come out all guns blazing in the third quarter, with the first two goals created with some Eddy Betts magic by little fella Sammy Lockhart. The boys were able to kick away with a well fought 50-point
win. Mitch Stephenson dominated all day in the ruck giving first use to an elite midfield brigade and
taking marks around the ground and was invaluable. Rhordan Holt used his bursts of pace out of the centre giving the forwards the best chance. Ash Younghusband played the majority of the game on the
ground but managed to get plenty of the footy along with Andrew Brett playing his consistent hard
ball footy and plenty of U-turns. Brodie Keller played his best game of the year running the ball off
half back and kicked multiple drop punts. Anthony smith also played his best game of the year, he
was short in stature but he played like a little fella too. Luke Holt was able to add to his goals tally
and no doubt would’ve checked straight after the game on how many spots he moved up the league tally after snagging 4 goals. Best players went to Anthony Smith, Andrew Brett, Luke Holt, Brodie Keller,
Ashley Younghusband and Rhordan Holt.
Incentives: Anthony Smith, Andrew Brett. Bendigo Bank: 3 Andrew Brett, 2 Brodie Keller, 1 Rhorden Holt. Turf Towel: Alex Balnaves. Wedderburn Hotel Meal: Jesse Douglas. Mountjoy Wool Coaches Award: Ash Younghusband, Tasco Fuel Award: Luke Holt.
Under 13s
A cold foggy morning and the enthusiastic 13’s travelled to Birchip. Up against a more experienced
side the Wedderburn boys fought hard.
Everyone contributed to the team and it is great that new players to the club this year are starting to settle in and also develop their skills. Even though smaller than their opponents this doesn’t deter any of them from having a real crack.
A good team effort with awards going to Mack Matthews, Gabe Caserta, Tyson Woodman, Zac Slide,
Flynn Lock and Junior Miller.
U16s
Wedderburn made the journey to Birchip to take on a larger team in Birchip, larger in size and numbers. Even with low numbers in our 16’s the team gave everything they had, with our defensive end kept very busy. Although outscored Wedderburn had great passages of play with their onballers working very hard. Gabe Caserta came up from the Under 13’s to help with numbers and kicked 3 goals, well done Gabe.
A good team effort with everyone contributing.
Rnd 7 Wedderburn V Wycheproof Narraport
Seniors
With another 4 players out this week and playing the standout premiership favourite Wycheproof –Narraport we suffered a huge loss. Even though hugely undermanned the Redbacks tried hard but were no match for the powerful Demons. Corey Lowry was hard at it all day and Callum Crisp was handy rucking and around the ground. Louis Holt continues to improve and a great effort by Anthony Smith to play two games. Ex North Melbourne player Corey Jones kicked 9 goals for Wyche.

Reserves
The result in the Reserves match is incredible considering the senior game. This game was between first and second on the ladder but even though key goalkickers Sam Johnston (injured) and Bailey Brear (in seniors) were out the Redback Reserves dominated to go clear on top of the ladder. Young gun Luke Holt was challenged to kick 4 to help enable a Redbacks win and he soundly delivered with 5 majors to be our best. Coach Shaun Polkinghorne was well in charge across half back and Oscar Holt was again in dominating form.

Tigers Steamroll Redbacks in Final Term.
The fortunes of both the Redbacks and the Tigers fluctuated quarter by quarter in their clash at Donaldson Park.
Wedderburn failed to take advantage of the breeze favouring the scoreboard end of the oval in the first term and when the Tigers started scoring goals at the other end of the ground Redback supporters could have been forgiven for thinking a repeat of last weeks debacle at Charlton was in the offering.
Not to be however as the Redbacks lifted in the second term, outscoring the Tigers and continuing in the same vein in the third term. Wedderburn had the bulk of play, and countless chances to build a winning score but deplorable kicking for goal saw the opportunity of an upset win slip sliding away. Two goals eight behinds to the Redbacks was not the way to build a three quarter time lead.
The Redbacks eight point three quarter time lead was quickly shot to pieces by the Tigers who after a tight first five minutes of the final term saw them pile on seven goals to none and run out deserved thirty seven point winners.
One small detail worth noting was that in the second half of the game there was a failure by both teams to score a goal at the Chapel Street end of the ground. Both teams managed two points each.
Sea Lake NT managed much cleaner ball use than Wedderburn whose foot and hand delivery left much to be desired and consequently led to wasted opportunities which ultimately cost the Redbacks the game.
The Tigers top line recruit Ryan O'Sullivan was a contributor all day. While he and Wedderburn's Jordan Hargreaves had a good duel In the ruck all day O'Sullivan's ability to drift forward and kick two telling goals made him very valuable. Brad Collins at centre half forward was a target for the Tigers and the Redbacks were unable to take him out of the game. Matt Elliot with three goals was another tiger who kept presenting and pushing forward. Lachie Gilbert is not big in stature but he is quick and dangerous around the goals and the Redbacks could not shut him out the action.
Luke Martin, Nathan Wight and Ben Mahon were others to produce telling acts when the occasions arose.
The Redbacks ability to find the football was not in question but the disposal and finishing rates hurt.
Veteran Adam Postle at full back was a consistent performer all day for the Redbacks as he thwarted many Tiger forward thrusts and he received strong support from Danny Benaim at half back. Tom Campbell, due to a BendigoPioneers bye played his first game for the Redbacks this season but his form indicates he won't be playing too many more for the red and blacks this season. His marking at centre half forward was strong and gave the Redbacks a forward focus. Cam Perry uses his strength to advantage and his efforts in the centre were pivotal to pushing the Redbacks forward. NathanHolt in his best performance for the season picked up plenty of possessions but unfortunately his straightkicking boot didn't accompany him. Could have had a real day out. Corey Lowry produced another of his trademark courageous and determined games. Has picked up a couple of war wounds over the past couple of weeks. Josh Wild and Jeremy Salinger produced their best form as they become more settled in new surrounds.

Reserves.
The Redbacks were keen to continue winning form against the Tigers and a very telling eight goal to nil first quarter was just the ticket to get them on their way.
A well organised and functional forward line saw Sam Johnston, Bailey Brearand Cam Steel make an assault on the goals from the very first bounce. Mitch Stephenson in the ruck was able to supply Ash Younghusband, Rhordan, Oscar and Luke Holt with plenty of opportunity and they did not let him down. Continuous pumping of the ball forward created many chances. Jesse Douglas in his first game for 2017 showed extremely good touch and this augers well for upcoming games.
When the Tigers did go forward a tight Redback defence led by Brodie Keller, Cam Last and Shaun Polkinghorne restricted scoring opportunities. Anthony Smith spent some time in defence this week and he came under notice with some timely marks and Sam Carroll played his usual tradesman like game. The Redbacks pace was a problem for the Tigers throughout.
For all the control displayed by the Redbacks the Tiger youngsters showed a lot of talent as they, when the limited chances arose often ran the ball and delivered well but the Redbacks were not prepared to give too much away and kept plenty of pressure on all contests.
Tyson McKenzie for the Tigers is a real prospect as he had already played a game in the under 16s and then came out and did it all again for the reserves. Phil Cox managed a couple of majors to make the most of his chances while James Feary and Ged Giddings
also featured prominently on a number of occasions as they fought valiantly to get their
team back into the contest.

Under 16s
Once again the Redbacks faced an uphill battle against a very talented Tigers outfit.
A fast running and skillful Tigers team showed what can be done with a football when it is in very good hands. Foot and hand skills were exceptional. A ten goal first term by the Tigers just about says it all as we don't see that happen very often.
However the Redbacks were able to have a little win. They won the final term three goals to one and as coach Jordy says you are only as good as your last quarter so it is onward and upward from here.
Jayden Leach in his first hit out for the Redbacks was an immediate success, Daniel Lansdell-King has a tremendous work ethic and does not stop trying, Jesse Matthews gives his all and runs off half back very well. Sam Lockhart and Isaac Holt continue to play consistent football, run well, use the ball with either hand or foot. Trent Jackson is another small forward come wingman who is a thinker and makes good use of his possessions.

The Redbacks were very competitive all day in their clash against the undefeated Tigers. The Sea Lake NT boys were in control throughout but the littlest Redbacks fought for everything and a number of times were able to get the ball out in the open to a player running free. Most times the ball came back quicker than it went forward but the right thought processes were in place for the Redbacks to move the ball down the ground.
Junior Miller is one of the smaller Redbacks but possesses great skills and he was in the thick of things all game. Each week sees Dylan Caruana progress in his development while Zac Slide is also making his presence felt. Isaac Rawady in his first season is improving every game while Clay Looby and Connor Winslett are also advancing their skills as their experience levels grow.

ABC, Coodabeen Champions Interview
On Saturday April 8th Wedderburn Senior Coach Danny Benaim was interviewed by the legendary Coodabeen Champions. Wow, can you believe the famous panel were talking live with our coach prior to the first Round match. No chance of tooting the horns for a big listener response at the ground as Danny was still on the Calder.
Like many you may have missed this as Danny was very quiet about the upcoming interview. Those having a quiet one with father Tony on Friday night were none the wiser either as Dad was busy running the raffle and had no idea. Lucky mum Julie got the “good oil” by text on Saturday morning from her thoughtful daughter in law, Carlie.
Still quite a few serious local football followers who never miss this Saturday morning ritual were stunned to hear the introduction of their own Wedderburn Football Club Coach. Questions were fired at Danny by Ian Cover, Jeff Richardson, Greg Champion, Torch McGee and Bill Baxter. Danny handled himself well and responded with aplomb. Unfortunately the Coodabeens curse continued with the Club being interviewed losing on the day. As Guru Bob would say “think about that one”.

Round 13
Wedderburn travels to Donald this week as they make their run to finish in the top 4.
The last few rounds has seen the Redbacks suffer with many senior players out injured. This has provided an opportunity for the young "up and comers' of Wedderburn to experience the big stage. Well done to Wil Holt, Matt Lockhart, Darcy Jackson and Joe Lockhart who have stepped up admirable to senior spots.
After this weeks clash with Donald we will all be looking to put our 'Bogan On' for a disco at the clubrooms. Search the back of the wardrobe for all those trackies, flannels and singlet tops and make sure all supporters and players get to the clubrooms from 8pm for a fun filled Bogan night.
Round 5
Unfortunately Wedderburn went down to St Arnaud on the weekend on a well fought out battle under a prevailing wind that disappeared as the afternoon progressed. St Arnaud had a good first quarter with the wind and that remained the similiar margin at the end of the game.
Goakickers: N. Holt 2, B. Fryett 2, L. Ritchie, J Cavallaro, M Dahlenbury.
Best Players: D. Benaim, B. Strange, R. Tonkin, L. Phelan, J. DeAraugo, H. Polglase
Wedderburn unfortunately fell short of Birchip on the weekend.
Round 2
Fancinating game this weekend when Wedderburn travel to Birchip for the second game of the season. Birchip were certainly convincing last weekend. How will the boys go? Promises to be a great clash on Saturday. Can't wait to see the Redbacks take on the Bulls in the match of the round.
We wish Cam Weston and Cam Perry all the best as they head to the other side of the world for a new experience. Will we see one or both back before the season ends? Time will tell.
Round 1 Results
Great start to 2015 Season 2015 for the Redbacks!!
Final scores can be found in the results section.
Best players: Jake Hayes, Cam Perry and Brett Strange.
Goalkickers: Luke Rosa 5, Ben DeAraugo 3, Nathan Holt, Jake Hayes & Mitch Dahlenburg 1 each.
Well done boys.
Round 1
Round 1 is just around the corner for the Wedderburn'Redbacks' and the first round is a replay of 2014 Grand Final battle with Charlton.
None of us need reminding of the final result, but just for that one person out there that doesnt know, it was a 1 point victory to the mighty Redbacks.
How will Saturday 11th April pan out? Be there to find out, as the boys hit the field with some promising new recruits. The boys have worked hard over the pre season to prepare them for the year ahead. The fire is definitely in the belly for the ultimate prize.
Im sure the Blues will come out on Saturday with the determination we all know so well. It promises to be an action pack spectacle.
Luke 'gotta love the guy' Rosa is back at the helm coaching the Seniors, Shaun 'Polka' Polkinghorne is coaching the reserves for the first time. Best of Luck Shaun, as the boys defend their 2014 title.
The under 16s is being coached by Wedderburn's favourite sons, Adam Postle and Jordan Hargreaves. Might be worth coming early to see these young (and not so young) guns manage the defending champions.
The stalwart Aaron 'Lockie' Lock is back teachng our future champions of the club how the game is played. We wish Lockie and his under 13 side every success in the coming year.
The day will also take in the unfurling of one, no two, sorry make that three football premeirship flags.
It will be a full day of action with Netball and Hockey also battling the Blues.
Go Redbacks
