The first quarter was very competitive for both sides with the home side drawing first blood with a goal to Motlop, Boort responded with two quick goals from Lanyon and Hodoras, but the Saints were able to match Boort and finished the term with two goals to give them a 9-point lead at quarter time.
In the second quarter Boort kicked with the aid of a slight breeze were getting plenty of drive from Lanyon who was gaining plenty of possessions. Stewart was also doing his share of the work from his pivot position but the Saints could not capitalise on his good work. Boort’s focal point was Easton and he was presenting on many occasions and teamed well with Baker late in the quarter to bring up both flags and extend their lead at the main break out to 7-points.
After the break both sides were unable to make any form of a break on their opposition, with both back lines defending strongly. This quarter didn’t see much work for the goal umpires with only two goals being kicked for the quarter, both to the Saints who had the use of the wind but failed to take advantage of it and at the last break the Saints had gained the lead by slender 2-points.
With nothing separating the sides the last quarter sounded to start proceeding and it was the Saints who scored the first of their eight goals for the quarter, Boort we quick to reply on a couple of occasions and the game was back in the balance. The home side attacked again and again with positive results and before the visitors new it the game was getting beyond their reach. Needs and Motlop stepped up for the Saints and topped off the good work of McNamee who was having another good day at the office. When the siren sounded to end the day’s play it was the home side who would grab the four points with a 35-point win.
