The saints need to string four quarters together in order to
win a game after a two quarter display against Wedderburn on Saturday. In windy
conditions the saints threatened the redbacks for half of the game until they
were blown away to a 60 point loss.
Nick Baldwin made his debut for the saints while Daniel
Gifford lined up for his 50th senior game.
Wedderburn started strong with the first goal to Sam Barnes.
The saints then attacked only to be rebounded and goaled by the burners. The
saints worked hard to score their first goal through centre man Luke Soderman.
But with the wind, the redbacks were too strong for the saints. They kicked the
next through Jake Hayes before Barnes put through two more. Even though the
saints were able to attack in this quarter, their bad kicking proved costly as
many scoring opportunities went wasted. Wedderburn finished the quarter running
and attacking well to convert two more goals.

The saints went in to the second looking to
bounce back from the first quarter and started well. They attacked strongly without a conversion, until Dylan Pascoe
was able to break open to score the first. Full Forward Bruce Hando follow Pascoe’s suit and kick another for the
saints. Wedderburn and Barnes were able to peg one of their own on to hold off
the saints for a short time, but the saints started to combine well across the
ground with Matthew Goode keeping Wedderburn at bay across the half back line,
and Adam and Lee Pollock showing their skills in the centre and forward line.
First gamer Baldwin was playing well across the forward line around the packs
and scored his first goal on debut. Then the Junction Roadhouse play of the day
go the saints rolling with great ruck work from Adam Pollock to Austin Fithall
who was able to run and kick to Hando for a goal. Lee Pollock added on to the
saints’ chase to narrow the gap to just 2 goals. Barnes was able to kick his
fifth for the game but only to have his goal erased from the margin from a bit
of Needs magic with a goal off the ground.
Half Time

Wedderburn 9 6 60
At half
time, Coach Egan expressed his concern about the silly mistakes throughout the
half. He praised the efforts of Centre Half Forward Goode and Ruckman Adam
Pollock, who were overpowering for the saints.
The saints
continued the momentum into the third quarter kicking the first goal through
Jesse Douglas. Adam Pollock continued his dominance in the ruck and was able to
kick a goal to bring the margin to only 4 points. The saints were very dominant
in defence early with Goode continuing to play well and Daniel Pickthall
starting to beat Barnes at the contests. But inexperience kicked in when
attacking and the mistakes started to build up. This gave the redbacks the chance
to take over and they did so, running the ball down the wing for a goal to
Barnes, and shortly after to Handley. They continued to dominate for the rest
of the quarter with three more goals to set up a handy lead heading into the
last quarter.

Wedderburn
turn their game up a notch and never looked back in the last quarter, giving
the saints no chance to come back. They started attacking quickly for their
first goal. Then Barnes started to get back on top to kick two more before
Cameron Perry kicked another. Needs was able to put on the saints first but it
was only stopping to inevitable as the redbacks put on 3 more goals, while Brad
Organ was able to score for the saints. The redbacks were far to superior and
ran away victors.
