Netball Team Selection Policy
Our Commitment
Our club supports a fair and open process for the selection of teams.
We believe that sport should be safe, enjoyable, inclusive and maximise individual participation and skill-set. Our club acknowledges that positive experiences in junior competition will contribute to a lifelong love of sport.
The Selection Process
Selection Dates and Times
-
Players will be informed on the club website, Facebook page and the newspaper, of the dates, times, and location of the selection trials.
-
The selection process occurs over a minimum of 3 sessions. Additional sessions may be added at the discretion of the Netball Committee.
Selection Panels
-
A selection panel is composed of a group of Club members and non-affiliated members of the community.
-
Members on the selection panels have been approved by the Netball Sub-committee for their integrity, independence and integral knowledge of netball as a team sport. In addition they will have completed the Netball Victoria “Select for netball success” course.
-
Where possible, there will be a minimum of 3 selectors on each selection panel. This includes a netball committee member, the coach and an independent member of the community who has been approved by the netball committee. In junior grades, if a coach’s child is trialling for the same grade as their parent is coaching, the coach will not form part of the selection panel. The senior and junior netball co-ordinators will not participate in selection panels, in order to remain impartial mediators in the case of a dispute.
-
Where a panel member is unavailable for a session, the netball committee will replace them with a suitable substitute.
Selection Trials
-
Each player will have the opportunity of detailing to the Netball Coordinators, their preferred grade. This will act as a guide for selectors and players must realise that they are trialling for a position in the Rams Netball Club and not in a particular grade. Players may be offered a position in a grade higher or lower than their prefered choice, based on skill level and team balance.
-
Each player (except for 11&U) will have the opportunity of detailing to the Netball Coordinators their favourite positions and every attempt will be made to accommodate this request over the trial period.
-
Some players may be requested, during the selection process, to fill positions that were not selected as their favourite position- this may occur for one of two reasons:
1. The selection panel members identify skill areas during the trial period and wish to observe the player in those positions.
2. To assist with the team positioning dynamics as a whole. Deniliquin Rams Football & Netball Club encourages versatility in team sports and it is a great attribute to have during your participation in a sporting life.
-
If a player is unavailable to attend trials due to injury, illness or other extenuating circumstances, an application should be submitted in writing to the appropriate netball coordinator for review, before the first trial date if possible. Once selection trials have started, contact should be made by phone as soon as possible.
-
The number of players selected in a team will be based upon the feasibility of ensuring each player receives appropriate game time. A player may not be offered a position in the Rams Netball Club, even though they have satisfied all of the selection criteria, due to a lack of suitable positions.
Selections for Under 11’s
The focus for Under 11’s will be on skill development. A team will be formed at the start of each season, players will be chosen depending on player age and numbers in conjunction with the coach and Netball Sub-committee. Older players will have priority, younger players may be able to attend training sessions.
Selection Criteria
The following observations will contribute to the final selection of players to specific teams. Please note these are placed in specific order of importance.
1. Participation in the selection process (players must have attended at least ⅔ of the sessions, or have been granted an exemption by the netball committee).
2. Attitude/behaviour towards other players, coaches, umpires and the selection process.
3. Skill level- Defence, Attack and Mid-court.
4. Team balance.
5. Player and family commitment will be taken into account.
Also, be mindful that the player’s age, within a specific age group, has minimal impact on the team selection process. It is a combination of all of the above observations and considerations. This is applicable for both top and bottom age players. eg. A player who is top age should not expect to be in a certain team solely due to falling into the eldest age group and the same is applicable for bottom age players. No assumptions regarding the age of the player and which teams they are selected within should be made.
Team Announcements
-
The final teams will be announced by an appropriate means of communication. Successful players will be notified by an email, text message and/or phone call, whilst unsuccessful players will expect to receive a phone call and will be notified prior to the successful players.
-
In the event of excess player numbers, the club principles are to have junior players playing within our junior ranks. However, at times this option may not be available and alternate options such as selection into a higher grade or being placed in a ‘B’ team, will occur.
-
In all cases, movement of these players will be at the discretion of the coach, Netball Coordinator and Netball Sub-committee in consultation with and the agreement of the player/s and parents.
Dispute Process
1. Concerns about team selection must be expressed, in writing, within 48 hours, to the appropriate netball coordinator (senior or junior) and sent to drfncnetball@gmail.com
2. The netball co-ordinator will then discuss the concerns with the coach and panel if necessary and provide feedback to the player
3. If concerns cannot be resolved with the Netball Coordinator, players need to follow the grievance policy located in the handbook on the Club’s website.
