Brief history of Newstead Football Club:
A strategically located punt across the Loddon River made Newstead an important staging post for miners making their way from both Ballarat and Adelaide to the Mount Alexander (Castlemaine) diggings during the gold rush. Today the golden days are recorded in the Court House Museum's collection and in long-established businesses such as the old general store, a winery and a candle factory. The major recreational area is Lake Cairn Curran, a popular boating, fishing and swimming spot which really hits its straps during the annual sailing regatta in November. Newstead lies 16km north-east of the thriving town of the famous old gold town of Castlemaine which was known as Mt Alexander in those hectic times when fortunes were made on the swing of a gold miner's pick.
The club was founded in the early 1880s and played in various leagues during its history.
It went into recess during the second world war and didn't reform until 1960 as part of the Maryborough District League.
Newstead has featured in some of the more interesting games in their time in the league, including the 1989 match against Primrose, who left the field at ¾ time and refused to return. The game continued until a point was scored to end the match.
The club prides itself on its ability to provide a sporting outlet for the youth of the town and its ability to include the community in its endeavors.
Population of Newstead in 2008: 725
