Foot-Brawl
To mark the end of the 1991 football season a disco was organised in the upstairs bar of the Avoca Hotel.
The function was a roaring success and was well patronised by Avoca and Natte-Bealiba footballers.
Although the two clubs are renowned for their competitiveness on the field, rivalries were cast aside for the night.
However, the goodwill was suddenly cut short when a bus transporting an Ararat District Football League Club arrived.
The unexpected visitors very quickly wore thin their welcome, and confrontation was inevitable.
Without hesitation the Natte boys joined their mates from Avoca in a show of strength.
Sadly the lads from Ararat ignored all warnings, and `a hell of a blue erupted`.
The Avoca and Natte boys accommodated the visitors, who retreated out onto the hotel balcony.
In a scene reminiscent of a Hollywood western, a bloke from Ararat somersaulted off the balcony when the banister collapsed.
In hot pursuit, Avoca`s Bob Webb landed square on top.
The impromptu entertainment ended with the Ararat team making a hasty exit and, needless to say, the Bulldogs have not played the Ararat District team in a practice match since!
