Beaten by the Bride.
After breaking a 27 year premiership drought in 1953, Avoca missed the finals in 1954 and 1955, finishing in fifth position.
1956 seemed to be a familiar story until just prior to the finals, when Avoca struck form and clinched a spot in the four.
Avoca beat Moonambel by 26 points in the first semi final, and suddenly their premiership hopes were greatly enhanced.
After playing in the 1953 Premiership side, Brian Lindsay had become an integral part of Avoca`s team and premiership aspirations.
Over the years the toughness of the Lindsay family as Avoca footballers, had become legendary, and has been well documented in chapter three.
Mid way through the 1956 season Avoca`s prospects of making the final series were very long odds.
With this in mind Brian Lindsay set the date for his wedding, three weeks after the football season.
But someone up above seemed to have other ideas, and the unthinkable occurred.
For Brian, a devout footballer, the decision of choosing between his wedding and playing for Avoca in the Preliminary final was excruciating.
Brian may have had a tough reputation, but when he confronted his bride to be, he went to water.
Whilst the star back man was handcuffed to the altar, his beloved Bulldogs were eliminated from the final series by Navarre, who won the match by just nine points.
