Aggressive recruiting over summer boosted the club’s stocks enormously.
Former Maryborough champion centre-man, Ian Goodchild, was appointed coach.
Ron Field returned home from Charlton, whilst Geoff Swann, a tall solid forward and Peter Heenan, a gutsy rover, added to the club’s depth of talent.
The player list was:
Ray and Rob Astbury, John Baglin, Brian, Ken and Terry Beavis, Kelvin Bourke, Arthur Butler, Ricky Carter, Michael Church, Brian Coghlan, Bob Crooks, Ian Drummond, Col Evans, Lance Farnsworth, Bruce, John and Ken Field, Damian Field, Charlie Field, Ron and Graeme Field, Ian Goodchild, Brian George, Terry Harris, Ian Harvey, Len Harris, Peter Heenan, Neil Hamer, Norm Harrison, Barry Hendy, Bob Humphrey, Bill Innes, Maurice Jolly, Doug and Ray Joseph, John and Geoff Jolly, Bob Latch, Brian Lindsay, Charlie Marshall, Max Martin, Jim McKenzie, Keith Morris, Trevor Pryse, Ian Pora, Greg Romey, Geoff Powers, Max Robertson, Frank Robson, Geoff Swann, Russell Summers, A Trainor, Harold Trainor, Bill & George Wardlaw and Len Williams.
Ian Goodchild and Ron Field were both selected in the Lexton league side.
Suring the year VFL club St Kilda succeeded in signing Ron Field, but he decided to join Maryborough instead, where he established a reputation as one of the best centre half backs in the Ballarat League.
Once again the senior side finished fifth, following a draw against Waubra in the last game of the home and away season.
The reserves campaign to defend their title as premiers looked promising after a nine point victory over Beaufort in the 2nd semi final.
But when the two teams clashed again in the Grand Final, Avoca was disappointing losing by 35 points.
