Congratulations to Ben Harrison for being selected to represent the Victoria Country State Team to play in Canberra this week.
Ben has been selected in the full back position and if his form at Avoca this season is anything to go by, then he will certainly give a good showing.
It is dissapointing that Brendon Hedger will not be joining him, and most likely would have if not for a season ending injury that occured at State squad training recently.
We wish Ben well for the week! And also congratulate Scott Sellers from Maryborough Rovers and Mark Ramsey from Newstead for their selection as well. The MCDFNL boys have been selected in the last line of defence for the team.
We also congratulate Nick Coghlan who is now playing with Irymple and has been selected in the Major State league team and is to be coached by Peter Knights. A great effort Nick! Well done!
The Victoria Country District State Team is drawn from a very diverse mix of 30 District football leagues across the WorkSafe VCFL. Players in this squad have been selected on current form and their performances in the recent WorkSafe Country Championships, Interleague series and club football.
Ex-Richmond player, Sydney Swans General Manager, and highly successful metropolitan and country league coach, Ron Thomas has been in charge of the District team since 2007, and brings his keen eye for recognising talent to the team again this year.
“We have had to have a look at the type of player we have selected across this team this year, as these are unique circumstances in this Carnival, and the competition has lifted a notch.”
“We will have to manage the boys through the first two days of play – and in particular Day one where we have four matches to play. But we are working to a plan and hope to see it come to fruition with the group we are taking to Canberra.”
The stakes are definitely different this year for those teams in the former 2nd Division of the Landmark ACFC Carnival. They have to play against all teams, and this will be a true test of the skill, confidence and endurance of the playing group. It is a challenge that the Victorian District team are looking forward to – with playing their contemporaries in Victoria Country Major League Team on Thursday being a particular highlight.
Experience campaigners and team leaders with Landmark ACFC experience in Andy Grant (Elmore), Steve Schultz (Kalkee) & Chris Urie (Neerim-Neerim South) will be back with the squad and lending a guiding hand to the ACFC debutants in the group.
