Amphitheatre shocked Avoca prior to the 1931 season when they tried to entice Erroll Howell to join them.
A clearance application was refused and Erroll, whose kin had a long association with Avoca, was appointed coach.
Avoca footballers named amongst the best players during the year included: John Bowen, Harry Powers, George Harrison, Bob Gordon, Clem Hill, Keith McDonald, Erroll Howell, Hec Harrison, Goldy Drummond, Roy Romey, Keith Astbury, Roy Hellings,
Bill Harris, Alex Studd, Robert Watts, Jack Coghlan and Ted Field.
Avoca finished fourth on the ladder and were eliminated in the semi final, losing to Learmonth by 29 points.
