Well what a great day it was at Karee Wool Riverside Oval for round 1 of 2016 where we took on Marong. The ground looked an absolute treat, and it was a credit to all of the volunteers who worked tirelessly to get everything prepared.
Special thanks to Andrew Friswell for getting the Fresh FM guys up and running, and mark Holland for the use of his truck, so that they could broadcast the game.
FOOTBALL-
It was an up and down day on the football field to start the year off.
Unfortunately, the U/18s had to forfeit their game because of lack of numbers, but they were able to still have a scratch match and play a tough contested game. Many thanks to Marong and their coach for lending 2 of his players to help even up the numbers.
The boys really gave their all, but couldn’t quite keep up with a very strong Marong side in the end.
The best players were;
Jake Webster, Bryce Beggs, Lachy Else, Jeremy Pearson and Jake Webster.
For the reserves, Pre-Season started for 75% of the side at the first bounce of the game so it was always going to be a tough match. The boys came out firing early and thanks to the twin towers up forward in Lakes and O’Doyle Rulz, went out to a 13 point lead at the first break.
The 2nd quarter was basically the opposite, with Marong kicking 5 goals to our 1.
Captain Courageous Tommy, J-Mac and Ned Martin tried hard to get the guys back into it but unfortunately, we fell 6 points short at the final siren.
The best players went to J-Mac, Tommy, Ned, Ricky McMahon, Kyle Brittan, and the players player award went to Big Ned.
Well done to Kronky and Tony White on their first games at coaching together, the guys are only going to improve from here.
The seniors were going into their match as underdogs in everyone’s eyes except their own. You could tell in the rooms before the match that there was a lot of belief and that they are expecting big things. The boys flew out of the blocks early thanks to BC getting back some of his best footy and Sammy Kennedy popping up everywhere around the ground, and they held a 3 goal lead at ¼ time.
The 2nd quarter was just as entertaining to watch and the boys did not let up at all. Lachy, Sammy, Mitch, Fletch and Bakes were enjoying the delivery that big Topknot Toohey was giving them and the forwards in BC, Rommers, Fitta and Dills were reaping the rewards.
In the end, the boys ran out 4 goal winners after a quiet last quarter but that didn’t dampen the spirits after a hard fought win. The result was quite special considering they played with 17 players all game, with Billy Price deciding to just hang out in the Fresh FM commentary box and provide special comments.
Best players went to BC, Sammy, Lachy, Connor, Rommers and Caleb Argus. The Hard As A Cats Head went to big Rommers.
NETBALL-
What a start to 2016 for the girls on the court. 7 games and 7 wins!
The minis kicked off the Netball for the club and there were some very excited young stars running around. Little Ava Holland was called upon to fill in and take the court at the last minute, with 2 girls in the team arriving late into the first quarter.
We had Poppy Curnow, Rose and Ava Holland all playing their first game ever of netball for Newbridge. Well done girls!! Abbi Wells and Jazz Friswell were in top form shooting the ball and the attacking end worked extremely well with Mya Alexander. Awards went to Jasmine Friswell and Abbi Wells. Very proud of Newbridge a big well done!!
Newbridge by 1 goal.
15s – What a pleasing effort for a first game. All girls walked onto the court and gave 100% at all times. The new girls fitted in well and every player supported their team mates. Well done everyone!
The Roz Comer award went to Sophie Craig, the Sportspower award went to Jemma Gordon, Mars Bar award was won by Matilda Saunderson and the Foundry meal voucher to Elisha Beggs.
Newbridge def Marong by 8.
17s – The girls started strong and took an early lead with their accurate passing and goals. Holding onto the lead was tricky at times as we got tired ad little mistakes were made, however we pulled together and came away with the win. A huge thank you to the U/15 girls who filled in as we only had 6 players this week.
The Foundry meal voucher went to Moni Friswell, the Dixon Family award to Rhylan O’Toole and the A Grade chocolate was won by Neve Curnow.
Newbridge won by 5.
C Res – A very impressive start to 2016 with the girls all gelling together beautifully and coming away with a convincing victory. Nic McLean controlled the game well with her experience and was awarded the Foundry Award and Annalise Hinton was strong all day and received the UltraTune award.
C – A great start to the season with a win against Marong. All girls played really well across all 4 quarters. Our hard work over the pre-season paid off with us running over the top of them in the last quarter, winning by 8.
Best players were Keshia Fithall and Caitlin Smith.
B – The girls took a while to get going in what was a hot opening quarter. There were some great passages of play unfortunately our goals just weren't dropping. As the game progressed our shooting improved and our fitness prevailed through the second half pushing harder and and widening the score line. Shar in GD was great all game chasing down everything that was loose close by and combining well with Meg to get some good turnovers & rebounds resulting in goals for us. Reens, Bakes, Sel & Carmi ran the mid court well with Jessie and Ren working well in goals together on a new combo. Newbridge winners by 9.
Awards: Foundry Hotel - Shar, Jacs Salon - Ren
A – WOW what an impressive unit! The way our girls played against Marong was beautiful to watch. Pressure applied at the beginning of each quarter resulted in many turnovers converting to goals. At the 8min mark of the first quarter Tara had 10 on the board and with Jane working hard out in GA her efforts soon saw her hitting the scoreboard too. Rach, Tam & Gemma all worked tirelessly throughout the entire match chasing loose balls, backing each other up & feeding beautifully, while new recruits Meg & Amy in defence looked as though they had played together for years. What a highlight watching the huge amount of intercepts they were picking off from everywhere sending the ball strongly into our attack. Keep up the intensity girls, our hard work through preseason will continue to prove our worth. Newbridge winners by 46 goals.
Awards: Foundry Hotel - Rach, Newbridge Hotel - Amy
Good luck to all sides today against Pyramid Hill.
GO NEWBRIDGE!!
