Mount Pleasant won its first A-grade premiership in more than two decades when it defeated White Hills in the Heathcote District Netball Association grand final on Saturday.Mount Pleasant, which also took out this season’s minor premiership, led at every change to win 51-41 at Strauch Reserve in Huntly.Tanya Paolucci talks to Mount Pleasant netball coach Bridget Tuohey.To view via iPhone or iPad, click Change Player on the black bar below and select MPEG4.options={AutoRewind:false,AutoStart:false,Player:"flv",Speed:"low"}It was a memorable day for the Blues, who also won the A-reserve premiership as well as C-grade honours.Mounts got away to a fast start, with Bendigo Spirit basketballer Gabrielle Richards holding the height advantage over White Hills’ Jacinta Loutitt in the ring.The Demons responded promptly, with fast give-and-go play from defence into attack.White Hills’ attacking combination of Zenda McConnell and Kirsten Arundall linked efficiently with goal shooter Tessa Atherton and goal attack Danielle Sawyer to leave the Demons within a goal at quarter-time.Strong defensive pressure by HDNA best and fairest Bridget Tuohey at goal keeper and Dearne Bowes in goal defence created problems for White Hills, with the dynamic duo creating opportunities for their side with several skilful intercepts.Richards continued to dominate under the ring for Mounts, with her height and positioning make hard work for the White Hills defence.Mount Pleasant wing attack Jackie Crawford provided a great link down the court and proved to be a difficult match-up for the Demons.Blues captain Carine Hunt fought hard against the experienced McConnell on the wing and won some crucial turnovers for her team. Trailing by three at half-time, White Hills brought on tall defender Lynsey Addlem to take up the challenge against Richards.Addlem teamed well with playing-coach Janene Cass in defence, with their efforts temporarily stemming Richards’ flow of goals.Young goal attack Abbey Dorrington stepped up for Mounts in the third term, working well to take the pressure off Richards, who was being double-teamed.At the other end, White Hills goaler Atherton found form and hit a few important long-distance shots as White Hills trailled by three at the final change.The Demons, who defeated Mount Pleasant in the second semi-final to earn a week off, made the first move in the final term, breaking the Blues’ centre through a Cass intercept to score on the first break.A head-on collision between Cass and Dorrington brought the game to a halt.When the game resumed, it was Mount Pleasant which found momentum with Bowes and Tuohey in defence leading the way.Dorrington and Richards also started to take control in attack to give the Blues a run on.Mounts A-reserve captain Anthea Griffin also stepped up in the final term, replacing Mel Harris in the centre, who also had a strong game.With the energy of their fans behind them, Mounts piled on the final six goals of the match to win by 10. Goal defence Dearne Bowes was named best on court.Tuohey, Mount Pleasant’s playing coach, said the win was a brilliant team effort.“We just applied so much pressure and tried to shut down their game,” she said.“It was tough conditions, but the whole team just ran it out and everyone did their job to get the win today.“With A-grade not winning for 21 years it makes this win very sweet.”In A-reserve, Mount Pleasant beat Elmore by 22 goals. White Hills won the B-grade clash with LBU by five goals, and Mounts fought on for a two-goal victory in the C-grade final against LBU.Huntly defeated LBU 20-19 to win the D-grade flag.
