MID SEASON REVIEW - 2013
This year in partnership with the Sandhurst Marist Dockers Junior Football Club we have entered a Mount Pleasant under 14 team in the Bendigo Junior Football League.
We have good numbers with 21 boys in the team who have improved greatly over the first half of the season and are setting themselves up for a really good finish to the season.
The junior competition started 8 weeks on 20
th
April and after playing 4 rounds of grading games the re-graded season commenced 18
th
May.
After the first 4 rounds of the re-graded competition we are sitting in 5
th
position on the ladder with 1 win, 2 losses and a bye.
The boys have had a really interrupted season so far with byes in round 2 & round 5 plus a general bye for the June long weekend.
This means we have only played 6 games and haven’t been able to string together more than 2 games in a row so it’s been hard to build continuity into our play however the boys are improving and it’s been great to watch.
Round by Round Review
Grading Games
(Rounds 1 to 4)
Round 1 –v North Bendigo
(20-Apr-13)
Round 1 saw us play our first game together at Toolleen against North Bendigo and the boys soon learned that if you don’t compete early you can easily be 15 goals down by half time.
In the second half the boys turned it on and eventually won the last quarter but the damage was done in the first half and it was a great lesson to learn.
Player awards on the day went to Ryan Degenhardt, Griffin Hicks, Jarred Metcalf, Harry Sexton, Tristan Boykett, Will Berryman & Bailey Giri.
Round 3 – v Calivil United
(4-May-13)
After the bye in round 2 our round 3 game was also played at Toolleen against Calivil United. The bye obviously interrupted our preparation as we forgot the lesson of round 1 and we again saw ourselves 11 goals down at half time.
This time the boys responded even harder and eventually won the second half however this was a good reminder how not to start footy games.
Awards in this game were earned by Harry Sexton, Bailey Giri, Riley McNamara, Tristan Boykett, Iggy King & Will Pollard.
Round 4 – v Marong
(12-May-13)
Round 4 saw us travel to Marong to take on the might of the Panthers at their home ground and I am sure they were expecting a 10+ goal win based on our first 2 games.
This time our boys came to play footy and in the wet & cold conditions they gave it everything in the first half to only be a goal down at half time.
We continued to match it with the bigger Marong side in the second half with the scores level with only 5 minutes to go until we ran out of legs and lost a close game by only 9 points.
Although we lost the mood in the rooms after the game felt like a win because our improvement was there for everyone to see and for the boys to enjoy.
Our best players receiving awards were Coban Lenten, Daniel Whiting, Kester Jansen (3 goals), Lochlan Tobin, Tom McTaggart & Tim Fitzpatrick.
Leadership Group Voting
Following the Marong game the team enjoyed a pie night at our Ewing Park rooms and voted for their leadership group based on the example their team mates had shown at training and on game days.
This is the 8
th
year I have watched young men vote for their own leaders and I am constantly amazed with just how mature the boys are with their voting to select great team leaders.
This year our team Captain is Harry Sexton, Vice Captains are Tristan Boykett & Daniel Whiting and Deputy Vice Captains are Coban Lenten & Iggy King.
Competition Start
(from round 5)
After round 4 the league re-graded the under 14 competition with the first 4 rounds being declared grading games. The season proper commenced at Round 5 when we unfortunately we had to accept another bye.
Round 6 – v Castlemaine
(26-May-13)
In round 6 we played Castlemaine at our second home ground of Ewing Park and based on the grading game performances we expected Castlemaine to be one of the top sides in the new competition.
We started really well kicking the first 2 goals and looked in top form only to let a couple of late goals through to allow Castlemaine to catch us on the score board for the first break.
The next 2 quarters were really close but again we let a few quick goals through late in the third quarter meaning we had to kick 4 goals in the last quarter to win.
We set up an open forward line for the start of the last quarter with a plan to win the ball out of the centre, kick long and run hard into the forward 50 to goal.
To the boys credit this is exactly what happened with the boys kicking 3 goals in 5 minutes to set up a really tense final 15 minutes of play which we couldn’t quite finish off seeing us loose a close one to a top side by only 2 goals. Efforts rewarded on the day with awards going to Ryan Degenhardt, Tom McTaggart, Jack Stevens, Max Membrey, Jordan Clarke, Griffin Hicks, Drew Merryfull, Ryley Millikin & Bailey Giri.
Round 7 –v Strathfieldsaye
(1-Jun-13)
Our next game in round 7 saw us return home to Toolleen to play another top side in Strathfieldsaye and this was a real thriller of a game. We took the early lead kicking 2 first quarter goals with the wind advantage only to see our lead lost in the second quarter when Strathfieldsaye had the wind. Our boys dominated the third quarter with 80% of the play locked up in our forward half however we just couldn’t kick score a point so we had to play well in the final quarter into the wind if we were to get a win.
Again we dominated the final quarter with probably 90% of the play going on in our forward half and we hit the lead by 1 point with only 5 minutes to go. However accuracy was an issue for us in the last quarter with our boys kicking 2.6 into the wind to Strathfieldsaye’s 1.1 to eventually loose the game by a solitary goal 6.10.46 to 8.4.52.
Whilst it was another loss, our boys improved efforts were obvious with us having more scoring shots than our opposition for the first time. Their efforts were also rewarded with the experience of playing in front of an enthusiastic noisy home crowd cheering them from the ground at the end of the game which was a great feeling for them all.
Players to receive awards were Tim Fitzpatrick, Jack Stevens, Jordan Clarke, Will Berryman, Tom McTaggart & Riley McNamara.
Round 8 – v Eaglehawk
(16-Jun-13)
In round 8 we travelled to Canterbury Park to take on Eaglehawk and we got off to a great start with the wind kicking 3.5 in the first quarter to lead by 22 points at the first break. The second quarter was a bit of a scrap defending against a strong breeze but we did well to clog up the play in the dead pocket limiting Eaglehawk to only 2.2 and we held an 8 point lead at the long break.
With the breeze behind us in the 3rd quarter the boys played fantastic free flowing footy with plenty of run & link play allowing us to kick 3.3 to Eaglehawk's 1.1 and take a 22 point advantage into the last quarter.
At the final break we talked about not just defending our lead against the breeze in the last quarter and set a goal of taking the game on against the wind and that's exactly what the boys did kicking 2.3 to Eaglehawk's 2.2 in the last quarter to win our first game of the season 8.11.59 to 5.6.36.
All the boys played really well with Tristan Boykett playing his best game ever bagging 4 goals and getting best on, other awards on the day went to Jordan Clarke, Coban Lenten, Bailey Giri, Daniel Whiting, Drew Merryfull, Griffin Hicks, Jarred Metcalf and the future Mounts legend Riley McNamara.
Theme Song
(first attempt)
As for our first effort with the club theme song the boys quickly started to bellow out the Carlton words before we hurriedly got the Mounts words to them mid song (1 sheet between 3 players) and they finished off using the right words with great gusto. I am sure we will get more chances to improve our singing efforts in the second half of the season.
Round 9 – v Kennington Sandhurst
(22-Jun-13)
For our round 9 match against 3rd placed Kennington Sandhurst we returned to Toolleen arriving early (with the frost) to take our team photo and prepare for our last game of the season at Toolleen in the hope we could get our first win at home.
The early start to the day and the cold weather probably contributed to our slow start to the match with a lot of our boys not running hard enough, however a few individual efforts in the first quarter saw us kick 4 goals and come into the first break with a 23 point lead (4.2.26 to 0.3.3).
Although the boys were happy with their scoreboard effort in the first quarter we reminded them that unless everyone in the team is giving it their best effort our early success wouldn't last.
Everyone's effort lifted in the second quarter and it needed to because Kennington played well and won the quarter 2.0 to 1.3 reducing our lead at half time to 20 points (5.5.35 to 2.3.15).
Our second half efforts were particularly good with our run and link play returning giving us the advantage to attack our goals resulting in 13 scoring shots to Kennington's 3 scoring shots for the half.
However we were again inaccurate with our shots at goal kicking 3.10 in the second half to Kennington's 1.2 to eventually win the game by 40 points (8.15.63 to 3.5.23).
It was great for the boys to finally get a win at Toolleen and take their excitement into the rooms for a seriously impressive rendition of the Mounts theme song. Player awards were earned by Griffin Hicks, Tom McTaggart, Kester Jansen (2 goals), Will Pollard, Max Membrey & Iggy King.
Round 10–v Kangaroo Flat
(30-Jun-13)
Round 10 of the BJFL saw our under 14's travel to Dower Park last Sunday to play Kangaroo Flat.
Given our recent inaccuracy in front of goals we had spent a lot of time at training during the week working to improve this aspect of our game and were hoping we could kick more goals than points for the first time in the re-graded competition.
The Boys got off to a flyer with an immediate improvement kicking 6.3 in the first quarter which was a great result for all their hard work on the training track.
In the second quarter we swapped our backs & forwards around to ensure everyone got a chance to put their hard work at training into action in a game and we continued on our improved form kicking 8.2 for the quarter giving us a score of 14.5.89 at half time.
We continued to rotate the boys through different positions during the second half and it was great to watch their enthusiasm to play for each other and maintain discipline to play to our game plan despite dominating the general play.
Whilst the final score of 21.14.140 to 0.1.1 was a great unexpected result it was overshadowed by the way our boys played the game showing respect for their opposition in victory, having fun giving their best effort for each other and showing so much improvement in such a short time frame.
Players to receive awards were Iggy King, our captain Harry Sexton, Ryley Millikin, Ryan Degenhardt, Jordan Clarke, Tristan Boykett (6 goals), Will Berryman, Max Membrey & Jack Stevens.
Season Summary So Far
Our team has 4 simple rules which are;
Rule No 1- have fun
Rule No 2- show respect
Rule No 3- keep improving
Rule No 4- see rule 1
So far the boys are playing to the rules and enjoying a great season and if they keep up their efforts our year can only get better.
This is the first time Mount Pleasant has fielded an under 14 team in the Bendigo Junior Football League. As the inaugural side we have a great bunch of boys wearing our jumper that the club and their parents can be very proud of them.
We are really looking forward to our next 5 home & away games to see as a team just how good we can become.
Win, lose or draw our aim this year is to make sure each of our boys ends this year a better player than they began, so they can look forward to next year and keep on improving each year to become the best they can possibly be.
Thanks to all the parents who help out each week filling all the volunteer roles, without your support the boys don’t get a game, so it’s much needed and greatly appreciated.
