The Echuca Bombers were always going to be tough opponents.
While the Tatura team got out of the blocks pretty well and put on four goals straight in the first quarter, Echuca looked menacing and played with plenty of intensity, particularly around the stoppages.
The second quarter proved to be the undoing of the Bulldogs, with the opposition smashing them in the centre, scoring nine goals to two.
Chris Ryan and Rob Knowles worked very hard down back but, without pressure on the ball carrier, it was pretty hard to hold their opponents from the goals.
The second half was much better, after a big spray at half time from the coach. The boys responded to break even for the rest of the game but the damage was already done.
Cam Trewin played well, kicking six goals. Corey Mallon was a livewire up forward as well and always looked too quick for the opposition. Wayward kicking though let him down a bit.
Linc Wellington was calm under pressure, particularly across half back. He took the mark of the day.
The bench was down to one half-fit player after half time. Bill Lovell looked pretty handy until he went off with a shoulder injury; a disappointing result after working so hard to get back to footy this year.
Jayce O’Neill went off early after working hard in the first half as well.
Maybe it’s time the league had a look at having four on the bench in line with other grades and leagues?
Coach Paul Serra was particularly disappointed with the second-quarter effort.
“We worked so hard for three quarters and then basically just gave it away for the last twenty-five minutes. Our midfield group let the ball be delivered far too cleanly into the forward line and we needed much more pressure to be applied all over the ground,” said the coach.
“Now we just have to focus on next week against Mooroopna, for three quarters we played pretty well so we just need that effort for four quarters next week,” he said.
Next week’s game is at Mooroopna against the Cats.
Final Scores: Tatura 13, 7, 85 to Echuca 22, 14, 146
Reserves
The Reserves worked really hard against a pretty good opposition.
James Pyke up forward was marking everything and was getting great delivery from the Coach Brendan Vanderdonk.
Jesse Zito and Mark Eaton were also in everything and with three quarters gone, the game was in the balance.
Terry Durward had kicked a couple of great goals to keep the boys right in the game and it was looking good for a great tussle in the last quarter.
The boy’s fitness levels got to them though, or else it was a drop in intensity, and they let Echuca score a couple of quick goals that saw the game get away from them. It was a disappointing end to the game and to the roll the reserves had been on, having won three in a row.
“It just shows how muchit helps to have plenty of numbers at training. Our last few weeks have shown how far we could have gone this year if only all the boys would get on the track,” said the coach. “They obviously wanted the win more than we did in the end.”

Under 18s
After a really good week on the training track, the U/18s were looking for a big effort this week. With Charlie Gale back for his first game in a while, and Ben McConnell from Undera coming for a game as well, numbers were good.
A slow start was not what was required though. The boys looked a bit rattled by the pressure applied by their opponents and didn’t use the ball well as a team early.
After a reminder of what is required at this level, the boys worked better as team in the second and third quarters and played with much more purpose.
Jonathan Coe played well for the four quarters and was clearly best player. He was well supported by Jake Rennie, who played his best game up forward for the year. Brad Stagg also played well, particularly in the first half.
In the end the boys couldn’t get back from the first quarter shellacking and that was the ball game. There were plenty of positives though and the boys continue to show improvement as a group. After losing key playmaker, Josh Thurston last week with a fracture in his ankle, the group needs to stick even tighter over the next few weeks.

A Grade Netball
Echuca, highly placed on the ladder, made a strong start against the Tatura girls, but Tatura was able to keep the pressure up all over the court. Kendal Clarke and Zoe Rae goal beautifully, with some accurate, long range shots. Sarah Bugoss took some timely intercepts and assisted Katie Thorn and Renee Lea driving the ball through the centre court with precise passing into the ring. Renee Lea’s aerial work was a highlight, as was the tussle in the defence ring with Karen Manning and Alex Bertram making the Echuca goalers earn their shots. Given Echuca’s position on the ladder, the Tatura girls played a fantastic team game and made Echuca earn their win.

B Grade Netball
Tatura started off well getting an early jump on the Echuca girls. Up by 4 goals at quarter time, Echuca was forced to rethink their game plan. Rachelle Moon was a valuable addition to the lineup this week and applied a lot of pressure to the Echuca goalers. Echuca steadied in the second and third quarters, scoring 10 unanswered goals to take the lead. Tatura surged at the end but couldn’t regain the ground. Another heart stopper for spectators.

B Reserve Netball
Tatura started well with an even first quarter with Echuca up by 3 at the first break. Jade Barrett and Rachelle Moon worked tirelessly to try to stem the flow but found the going difficult. The loss of Misti Gow towards the end of the game dented the teams confidence, and Echuca surged ahead to win by 24 goals.

Under 17’s Netball
Tatura had a slow start making quite a few mistakes which Echucas goalers capitalised on. A much better quarter second quarter had Tatura match Echuca, ten to nine in goals. Both sides fought hard in the third, but Echuca surged in the last quarter to win convincingly.
