Final Scores - Seniors Kyabram 15.15.105 def Shepparton United 7.12.54
Seniors
Kyabram Bombers soared to a triumphant win against United in a drought breaking win. After 17 years the Bombers brought the flag back to the Wilf Cox ending a wonderful season.
Paulo converted a 40 m set shot off a free kick, Nick Holman marked & added 6 more points from 25m out and Becky showed class with a beautiful snap shot, finishing the 1st term at 19 to 1.
During the 2nd there were anxious moments as opportunities went begging but our opponents were mimicking our misses so the score board remained similar finishing 38 to 7. Afro was on fire early snapping a goal from 20m out in heavy traffic. Gentle giant Jake Reeves dominated in the ruck gaining possession from most contests. Afro, Nick Coulstock, Josh Linton, Axel, and Oggy worked really well offering our forwards lots of chances. A slick passage of play from Sam Sheldon to Josh Linton resulted in another major. Morg’s was dynamite against Jason Eagle, winning the contests repeatedly and was well supported by the rest of the backline, both the Tom’s (Sheldon and Holman), Hilts, Chummy and Brad Eveready Edwards, all sensational.
The 3rd quarter could have been damning as we struggled to keep up intensity and let the D’s right back into the game. Jason Eagle scored his only goal (Morg’s must have taken pity on him) and started an onslaught including multiple goals from Forys and Looby who both played well for their team. The very athletic Luke Morris fed the ball into Paulo for a couple of goals this quarter to keep our head just above water with the score at 53 to 46 at the final break.
In the fourth term the Bombers displayed the reason for their success this season. They were a juggernaut and United were the sacrifice. Becky went into the ruck to rest Jake, and cops a free kick straight down to Paulo for the first in the final charge. Nick Holman marks and converts with typical cool composure before an opposition goal from Shaun Huy. Clarky then grabs the ball from cloud level to put us up another 6. Xav Hilton boots a big one from 40m out and the crowd elevates as celebrations at Kyabram seem assured. Paulo and Luke (flies like an eagle) Morris convert the final two to complete the 2013 Grand Final score Bombers (15.15) 105 to Demons(7.12) 54.
Despite leading on the board early, Kyabram wasted many scoring opportunities during the first half of the game with points that should have gone through the middle. Consequently the game was still well and truly open for the taking when the Demons stepped up the pace after half time. United kicked 6 goals during the third term and the bombers could only answer 2 of them. While the game was still anybodies at the ¾ siren, with Ky only up by one major, Dave Williams was confident his crew had the legs to dominate in the late stages. The Bombers kicked United out of the ballpark in the end with 8 accurate kicks to United’s 1, running out 51 point winners. Interestingly, the final gap in 1996 against Tatura when Ky last took a flag, was also 51 points.
Paul Newman kicked 5 goals for the game, despite David Gillespie’s hard work to stop him. Gillespie never really had his measure and Paulo could possibly have scored that many again but for a few unusual misses and several that he flicked off to team mates. To win his first Premiership as the Captain for the club to which he has stayed steadfastly loyal despite many attempts from other clubs to lure him away, must surely be a career highlight. It has been well documented during this year that Paul has carried serious injuries and we now all wish him a hard earned rest and recovery.
There were so many great passages of play and memorable individual efforts but the flag definitely belongs to every player as this team was united (er didn’t bomb out ). Congratulations to the boys, Dave and Rooster, Haisy and Daz, and to the committee and to Kyabram. Bring on 2014.
Under 18s - Kyabram 10.10.70 def Benalla 5.7.37
Under 18’s report
OK. The majority thought these boys were the under dogs but there were no surprises for me. I honestly thought the Kyabram lads would be right up there at the end. There is so much talent in this young team and I believed, that if they could get a birth in the grand final, they would make history. Think they are still writing the story and it’s now Tuesday!!!!
Many of these kids had the advantage of having been beaten previously in grand finals before they ran out on Sunday. The smart of defeat can inspire, and it showed on the field as they burst out of the blocks with relentless defensive tackles in the opening terms. The 15 year old Kyle Mueller , Matt amazing Ryan and Jarryd Pertzel , all put big scores on the board early in the game.
Incredible pressure from the mid field group destroyed the Saints hope early. Logan Demasi was explosive and ably backed by Jayden Mitchell and Nic Ross. Aaron Hayes, Josh Wiffen, Jarryd Pertzel, Sean Dillon, and Eamonn Ogden gave the backbone to this win, relentlessly covering the entire ground and dominating play at both ends. Perhaps their tenacity over whelmed Benalla as the score at half time was damning.
This was a brilliant display of team effort from every player. There were no prima donnas and this showed on the score board as the boys continued to keep their opposition goalless until 4 minutes into the 3rd term. Corey Walsh, Jake Parkinson, Besim Besim, Brad Power, Josh Wild & Matt Morris were relentless with incredible defensive pressure.
Benalla were stung into action during the 3rd quarter, kicking true and keeping hopes alive. But the Bomber’s unit had no cracks on grand final day though their score remained within reach for Benalla until the final term.
Sean blue healer Dillon exasperated his opponents with his inspirational tenacity and second & third efforts, always doing the 1 pointers. Sheer class continued with Nic Ross, Liam Barrett, Brady Corso, Simon Hunter, Aaron Goode, Coby O’Neill and a sterling effort from Jack Donnell. We cannot forget the wonderful comraderie and support from team mate Jay De Cicco who was forced to watch his mates from the bench after a knee injury in the prelim.
Exciting team, with layers of depth. Congratulations to you all.
Netball - B Reserve - Bad luck to the B Res netballers - final score Shepp United 43 def Kyabram 28
It was a tough ask to go up against Shepparton in a grand final when the side had not lost a game in three years, but the Bombers had improved out of sight that they deserved the opportunity they had been given. The first quarter was filled with high intensity netball, with mistakes by both sides being picked up by the other team and converted. Only five goals separated the two sides at the first break, with United just able to get the better of the Bombers. However the rest of the game was a different story. United dominated the second quarter, with Kyabram just managing a goal by half time. For the rest of the game it was all United as they stormed away to claim yet another premiership in such a remarkable feat. Despite the loss the girls should be proud of what they achieved, improving out of sight to defy the odds to make it to the grand final. Final Score: Kyabram 28 defeated by Shepparton United 43.
