Sunny conditions greeted us last Saturday as we welcomed the Quambatook Football Netball Club to our home ground in a long-awaited return to local football and netball. It was great to see a healthy crowd in attendance enjoying the day.
A big welcome to all new players and supporters to the club.
The highlight of the day was the unfurling of the 2019 premiership flag, with life member Ron Pollington given the honours of the unfurling.
FOOTBALL
Under 14
The football day kicked off with the under 14’s participating in a ‘scratch match’ with some of the Quamby juniors. It looked as if everyone enjoyed having a run around to commence the season. Well done to everyone for making the effort to get involved. The signs look positive for a good season ahead for our Juniors coming through.
Reserves
The Reserves took to the field with a fair mix of experience and youth, and it didn’t take long for some of the experienced boys to take control of the game. It was a shame that the preseason training by Luke Hogan and Matt Poyner was all for nothing as they didn't make it through the first quarter!
The final score
Nully 23.10 - 148 defeating Quamby 1.4 – 10.
Better players were J.Vearing, M.Hawyard, L.Whitbourne, A.Smith and C.Fawcett. Wimmera Mallee Accounting votes were awarded to C.Fawcett (3 votes), J.Morrison (3 votes), J.Vearing (2 votes) and R.Free (2 votes)
Seniors
The Seniors had a solid hit out against a very competitive Quamby outfit. With the aid of the breeze a 5-goal lead was established at quarter time, and the boys were never headed as the game went on. Great to see some new faces to the club in the best players as well as many returning stars.
Final Scores
Nullawil 18.18 – 126 to Quamby 7.7 – 49.
Better players were M.Farmer, M.Quigley, P.Kelly, B.Barker, R.Smith and A.Casey. North West Ag votes went to A.Casey (3 votes), M.Quigley (2 votes), M.Farmer (2 votes), P.Kelly (2 votes), J.Bamford (1 vote).
NETBALL
F Troop
The F Troop girls were busting for a run with lots of fun and this they did with lots of enthusiasm and smiles. Kelly Hogan had her eye in as the goals were flowing. Well done to all the girls.
B Grade
The new looking B grade team were out to impress right from the first whistle to the last as they kept the fast momentum going throughout the four quarters. New star recruit Maddy Smith was brilliant in defence as was Gemma Fawcett down the other end of the court putting the goals in.
Nullawil 37 d Quambatook 2.
B Reserve
The ever reliable B reserve picked up from the 2019 Grand Final and didn't disappoint with the strong defence duo of Kate and Amy unstoppable, whist the newly appointed captain Lizzy was at her usual best putting the goals in.
Nullawil 70 def Quambatook 4.
The evening finished with delicious pizzas cooked by Murray Mallee Wood Fired Pizzas, and Tony Haley playing acoustic tunes into the night. The first Mighty Maroons Big Draw winner taking home $1,000 was ticket 44 – Luke Murray.
Next week
This week we take on Ultima at their home ground, which is always a tough assignment. Good luck to all participants today.
