Round 18
Winchelsea B ( 39) V BPH (51)
Not the result we were aiming for but a decent result in the end. We find this team very hard to match up against and with a Giant GS who we cannot match for height we were always going to have our work cut out.
We scored a reasonable 9 goals in the first quarter but the problem was that they had serviced their GS too much and she scored 14 of their 15 goals. Our defensive pressure was fairly tight but they were running system attack runs and we continued to chase instead of dictate.
Ebony put up most of the shots as they double teamed Min and lucky for us she shot well with 6 form 7 shots while Min patiently moved in the circle to make space for Ebony on receive a pass. When Min did receive a pass she was accurate shooting 3 from 4. The only rebound taken for the quarter was by Ebony after a missed shot.
Our attack for the center pass was a little disrupted, not finding a rhythm or set play where they were caught chasing us. Angie and Meg shared the receives with 6 each. Once the ball did break through their defense Meg smashed it feeding 9 passes into the goals and Angie threw 3.
We did not value possession throwing into their long arms ( Ange 2, Meg 2, Sam 1) and then repeating the same action not long after. It is times like this that we need our team mates to support and offer side leads to get the next pass off and then go from there.
The extra ball we needed from defensive pressure came 2 times through an intercept from Sam and Tori. We got one stoppage with a deflection from Tori but this was not enough to give our goalers extra opportunities to score.
There was a lot of whistle in their goal circle with contacts coming from Tori (5) and Sam (1). At some points in the quarter it was worth having a go at the ball or giving the GS a knock to try and put her off her shot but what ever was happening in the ring wasn’t enough to stop the GS.
Changes were made in the 2nd quarter which were effective because we only lost the 2nd 9 -11. The GS was still dominating with accurate shooting but we were delaying how quickly the ball went in. Sharna had an instant impact
Min took the bulk of the shooting on a very physical GK, she shot 6 from 9 and rebounded 1 of those missed shots. Ebony’s GD stepped up to her this quarter and applied a bit more pressure on the shot and receive. Eb shot 3 from 4 shots.
Angie stepped up and took 5 center passes with her holding style of lead while Ebony supported her when needed (2). We missed the chance to catch BPH with 6 ineffective passes in the 2nd quarter (Meg 4, Ange and Sam 1) and 5 turnovers (Ange 2, Sharna, Eb and Min 1). That is potentially 11 goals that we could have scored. When we play the better teams this is where we come undone.
Sara came on into WD and took a while to read the play but towards the 2nd half of the quarter she came out hunting taking 2 intercepts while Sharna and Meg played a supporting role taking one each. Sam tried to keep the GA busy, which worked but when the GA found space she fed the ball into the GS. BPH had pushed out the lead 27 -18.
We lost the 3rd 10 -13. Our accuracy was the main issue in this quarter. We had minimized our turnovers with only 1 ineffective pass and 1 turn over. Min was being shoved and it wasn’t being called. Pushing past that she still had the confidence to put the shot up shooting 7 from 10 and rebounding a massive 4 missed shots. Ebony received some beautiful feeds from Meg and Bron but they just didn’t sink shooting 3 from 5.
Bron came out strong offering different leads to Ange and taking 4 of the 7 center passes but Meg was still doing the bulk of feeds (8). This is something needs to worked on for next season as our C should not be the main player hitting the ring for a feed that is primarily the WA position.
Sharna started hunting for intercepts as instructed and it did slow the play up but the recovery for to cover the GS was not there, so if the ball was deflected they often got it back and rushed it into the GS. Sam starved the GA of the shot but I have to wonder was the GA a feeder and not a goaler. Her game stats of 3 /3 tell me this was her role. We were being easily beaten on the score board 28 -40.
We drew the last quarter 11 all, but it’s the little wins they had over us that blew out the score line. Min and Ebony worked the best together in the last quarter both shooting over 88%. Min shot 8 from 9 and Ebony 3 from 3. Bron took most of the C passes in the last and found a passage to lead into after the release, at times the passage cut off Min’s lead, this is something that needs to be worked on in the future.
Bron’s played wore her down and forced some rushed passes and as a result Bron threw 3 ineffective passes and we turned over the ball 4 times in an excited passage of play.
Sharna, Sara and Meg all came out for 1 clean intercept each. The work done in front allows these players to hunt and because they had eyes only for the ball the reward came. They missed only 3 shots for the game so the opportunity to take a rebound and convert was not there today, we needed more pressure out front and to minimize our mistakes.
Overall our defense just didn’t match their attack and they scored too easily and too quickly at times. Our attacking end had the opportunities but a rush of blood and lack of support at times meant that we had put ourselves under too much pressure. Although some of you HATE stats this week it directly shows us where we under performed.

Round 17
Winchelsea B V Belmont Lions
We trailed the whole game and were always in fight mode. After the 1st quarter we were down by 2, at the end of the 2nd quarter we trailed by 4, at the end of the 3rd quarter we were down by 3 and after a great fight we lost the game by 1 goal.
We started with a goal for goal contest but after 2 all they took a 3 goal run from us, to our credit we fought back and also took a 3 goal run, levelling the score. Before the 2nd quarter we started to find an attacking rhythm with another 3 goal run but unfortunately they quickly responded with the last 4 goals for the quarter giving them a 2 goal lead.
All 4 goalers were accurate ( Min 7/8 and Ebony 3 /4) which meant the defensive pressure was really important. Tori in GK tried to readjust her footwork to contest a clever GS but the GS was able to attract the whistle with a contact or obstruction call and make sure that she shot close enough to convert. Sam gave good chase with the GA by stepping up to her and not letting her in the ring, but when the GA did find space in the ring she fed the GS very well.
Sara played a floating style of defense when the ball was coming down court and the result was 2 intercepts, the only issue was that the floating style left one Belmont player free as all other defenders were manning up. Meg did a great job in C with very composed passes into the ring (2 ineffective) and a quick recovery on defense. Meg was the key to brining the ball down court.
Our attacking end were hot and cold, giving away balls with 6 ineffective pass ( Ange 3, Meg 2, Eb 1) to what looked like an open player but the drive or move hadn’t been finished. The defense from Belmont was strong particularly from the GD and GK. They made us work for every ball. Angie and Meg did a good job at working the ball until there was an opening.
Min was positioning well even when she was being double teamed at times her hold was missed making Min have to work harder in the ring for a position. Ebony was being left alone in GA until she stepped up and started shooting, that’s when they realized that we had 2 good goalers in the ring and peeled off Min a bit more. We were well matched but just made too many mistakes when we had the opportunity to score.
Changes were made for the second quarter with a circle defense change (Alisha GD and Sharna GK) and Bron came on into WA. These players had the luxury of watching the first quarter and working out what they needed to do to beat their player. Both teams goals were minimized with Winch only scoring 8 and Belmont 10 for the quarter.
We kicked the quarter off with the first 2 goals, levelling the score but a silly error closed our run and they went on to score the next 3 goals. In chase mode again everyone worked hard, especially our ring defender and they turned over the ball. Min and Eb did not let the team down shooting 3 in a row. Not long after they scored another 3 in a row and we had lost our window to take the lead.
Min and Ebony continued to work hard in the ring finding the space on the third second. Min was holding well but was missed on occasion, which made her have to work twice as hard for a position. Ebony shot 2 from 3 and Min 6 from 8.
The mid courters were doing their best but Belmont’s pressure on the pass made seeing the lead, hold or player hard for our smaller players. Bron moved through the space as instructed but timing wasn’t matching the players around her. Meg continued to work hard in attack and defense running km as the ball went up and down the court.
Defensively the pressure was strong delaying the quick movement of Belmont. We only got 1 intercept this quarter (Sharna) but the reward came with deflections and tips. There were 6 deflections and 5 of those came from our circle defenders (Sharna 3, Alisha 2) and Sharna also took 1 defensive rebound from 2 of their missed shots.
This quarter Belmont tried a press/ zone and it was very effective as this saw us give away the ball on 3 occasions. One of their 3 goal runs came from 1 of their center passes and 2 presses. At half time the score was 18 -22.
We won this quarter 11 – 10 but it wasn’t going to make up the 4 goal deficit of half time. We started the quarter with a 2 goal run and then another 3. Again we caught them and early it was 23 all. Every time we won the fight and brought the score back they fought back harder.
Our goalers received more ball which helped the score line. Min shot 9 from 9 and Ebony 2 from 3. Angie and Eb shared the C passes taking 5 each. Ebony’s GD was getting a little confused with who to defend as Angie, Min and Meg made sure that Eb was brought into the game with some great feeds and takes into the ring. Our ineffective passes were minimized with Angie and Meg only throwing 1 each, a significant change they helped our score line.
The intercept count remained low with Alisha taking the only intercept for the quarter. I think this is because Belmont were moving the ball quite quickly that the work being done was more about forcing them to turn over the ball rather than us taking an intercept. They missed only 2 goals and Sharna gained the position under the post to take one rebound.
A controlled quarter where we valued possession meant that we won the quarter but the fight was still on. We were going into the last 3 down, 29 – 32.
We won the last quarter 10 -8 but it wasn’t enough to claw back the deficit of the first half. Min was put under pressure to take the shot and she didn’t convert as many as what we needed shooting 5 from 8. Ebony put up the most amount for the game in this quarter shooting 5 from 6. Of our 4 missed goals Ebony and Min each took a rebound. The volume was there to steal the game but their defenders dug deep and put the pressure on us when it counted.
The center passes were shared between Ebony and Angie, this worked for us as when they were shared in the 3rd and 4th quarter we beat them. Angie was given a new WD whose job was clearly just to knock and block her drive. At times it was effective and on other occasions Angie burnt her with some clever play. Meg remained calm and cool not turning over a ball in the last quarter J.
Sam’s move into WD was the key to them turning over the ball in the last. Her long reach over the pass made it very hard for the WA to give a clean pass off. Sam took and intercept as did Sharna. Bringing the ball out of defense however was a little tricker for our defenders. We lacked drive and waited for the other player to lead and this caused 3 important turnovers (Sam, Sharna and Alisha). Sharna and Alisha applied the circle pressure that I asked for and this was part of why they only managed to score 8 goals for the quarter.
A well fought out game, that shouldn’t have been the fight it became. We had the opportunities to take the game in every quarter but just didn’t push on. A disappointing loss that we all felt.

The stats are very similar to last weeks stats. Scoring off our centers and our goaling conversion is why we didn’t overtake Belmont this week. There is always next week and we have nothing to lose. Lets get out there and give it our all. You never know the stars could align…
Round 16
Winchelsea B (29) V Werribee (44)
We had a very low scoring first half putting only 5 goals on the board in 12 minutes. We were struggling to penetrate our goal third with some strong defense from Werribee. They broke our first center and we were in chase mode from there. Min shot well with 4 from 4 but had to sit in the ring and wait for the delivery. Ebony shot 1 from3, the inaccuracy was the result of some persistence defense from the GD and GK.
Our center passes were shared amongst Bron, Eb and Sam and the reason for this was that Werribee was tagging us very well and covering our leads and dodges well. We had 4 ineffective passes that came from the back line players ( 2 Sam, 2 Meg) and 3 turnovers (Eb 2, Sara1). Werribee were confusing the space available and we threw and ran into it, causing an ineffective pass or a turnover. They were a well drilled team and that showed in the first quarter.
We tried to time our cracks at an intercept but they had full commitment to the ball and we only managed 1 (Eb) in the first quarter. Tori, Sara and Sam were trying a variety of positions on their players to try and get one up and the result was a deflection each, Tori and Sam had particularly good position for 2 rebounds. Werribee mid court gave their goalers great volume and even though they missed 6 goals they managed to put 10 on the score board. We were down 5 -10.
I made a positional change as Angie had the opportunity to see what needed to be done in attack a I thought moving her into WA, she would make the moves that were missing.
Our volume was better (11) but we only capitalized on 8. Min shot 5 from 8 and Ebony found her range shooting 3 from 3. Angie was dominate on the center passes taking 8 of the 11, she shock off the WD with shorter drives with sharp front cuts. Our errors started in the goal third with Angie, Meg and Min each throwing an ineffective pass and this was because their zone was still working on us and Angie and Eb each had a turnover as a result of their zone.
The only intercept taken this quarter was taken by Meg, she worked hard to chase down a ball and she was rewarded. Again we were strong at getting tips to balls ( 5 deflections: Tori and Meg 2, 1 Bron) but all the luck went their way and they ended up getting their hands back on the ball. Their GS was dominating in the ring and with her pushy hold she was fed close enough to score an easy goal. She shot 12 of their 15 goals.
Werribee had too many runs in the second with a 4 goal run, 3 goal run and a 6 goal run. We were deprived of runs this quarter and that left an 11 goal lead to Werribee. Half time score 13 -24.
They focus was to win the last 2 quarters. We just lost the 3rd quarter 8-9 but it was a much better effort put out on court. Alisha joint the team in GK as she was off the first half and was given clear instruction on how to play on the dominating GK, Sara moved into C and Bron out to WD. It was a goal for goal quarter with Werribee shooting the last for the quarter giving them the 1 goal lead for the quarter.
The whole team performance improved in the second half and the score quarter for quarter is the indicator. Min put up all our shots shooting at 72% (8 /11). Angie again dominated the center pass receives still finding the path for a feed. Our errors were minimized with only one ineffective pass that was thrown by Sara when she was on a fast break and she didn’t look down. Sara recovered that turn over taking an intercept and Alisha took one from reading the play well and hunting. Sara and Bron combined well and slowed the ball down in their attack getting 3 deflections.
They only missed 3 goals Werribee had Sam rebounded all 3. Alisha did a great job to block the GS out of a rebounding position and Sam went one on one with the GA. This was an effective combination and it limited their scoring. A quality quarter from all 7 players on court.
The focus remained the same – we wanted to win the quarter. We did the next best thing and drew 8 all. Min shot at 100% (6/6) and Ebony put up 4 shots, converting 2. In total we only missed 11 goals which isn’t too high but with limited shooting opportunities every goal counted. Angie continued her form and took 5 of the 8 center passes and made herself available for the second phase.
The fourth quarter was our strongest but we didn’t keep possession when we needed to with 5 ineffective passes (Angie 2, Meg 2, Eb 1). They came from our attackers and I think this is because the rush of blood and pressure to make something of the pass mixed with their zone meant that the finish off wasn’t there.
Meg was a powerhouse in defense with 3 intercepts and Alisha and Sam took 1 each. 5 chances that we didn’t capitalize on, otherwise the score line would have indicated that. There were 5 missed goals collectively and we didn’t rebound a shot. The ball could have went out of court after the shot or rebounded by the opposition… Is this an area we need to work on?
We met a lot of our goals but we didn’t have the ball in our actual hands enough to win the game. Our volume just wasn’t there and that’s why we won’t win games against good quality sides.

Round 15
Winchelsea B (30) V Geelong North (33)
We were all disappointed by the loss but today we were evenly matched all over the court and this made for a good game of netball. I think Geelong has been a little strategic with the placement of their players towards the end of the season and this saw their defence end being strengthened with the GD and their mid court was also of a better quality than their A grade team. No excuses though because we still could have won the game.
We started reasonably strong breaking their second center and giving us the first strike at a run. Unfortunately they were not that weak and they broke our center in response. We made a few errors early in the quarter and this gave them a 5 goal run. During this run our GA contacted, Angie threw an ineffective pass and we had an offside. We had our chances to break their run 3 times but let the opportunities slip through our fingers. We didn’t panic and we responded with a 3 goal run but we worked hard for this as we were called for a GS contact during the run.
Bron lead out well for the centers taking most and Angie delivered well. Most of the feeds into the goalers came from Angie in C (6) but Bron did a good job to play Angie in a good position on the ring for an easy feed. We threw 4 ineffective passes with passes that were thrown to where we wanted the player to be rather than where they were (Meg 2, Angie, Bron 1). Bron recovered well after an error and marked her player well getting the only deflection for the team. The wind played a factor with our goalers shooting 7 from 11, Min 4/ 7, Sarah 2/3 and Ebony 1/1.
Defensively, we didn’t take enough risks with only 1 intercept which came from Sharna. This was great because Sharna was given the task of hunting in the first quarter. We missed 4 goals and GN missed 2. We only capitalized on 2 of those missed shots with Sam taking one rebound up one end and Sarah taking another up the other end. We needed to improve if we were going to catch GN as we were 2 down 7 -9.
We outscored them this quarter 9 – 8 but it wasn’t enough to get on top of them. Ebony was our replacement GA with Sarah being removed from the court after a nasty fall half way through the 1st quarter and she did an outstanding job on a very experienced GD. Ebony shot 5 from 6. Min played this quarter well but clearly was concerned for Sarah and this had a slight impact on her performance shooting 4 from 6. Most of the C passes were taken by Ebony as her GD was sitting back double teaming Min, and underestimating Ebony’s ability.
We didn’t throw away too many balls with only 3 ineffective passes. The problem was that these passes were thrown when GN had a run and this was our chance to break it. We scored the first goal for the quarter but GN shot 4 following. We didn’t protect our C passes as well as I would have liked but they still found hands. Meg turned over the ball twice while Sara held the ball for too long with another turn over.
We were on a 3 goal run before Sarah went down but credit to the team we went on to score 3 more. The run came from some great defensive pressure. Our timing was better and as a result we took 5 intercepts. Meg happened to be at the right place at the right time taking 2 intercepts, Tori, Eb and Bron each taking one each. Meg and Bron in attack were relentless also getting hands to 2 deflections.
The whistle was blown a lot more in this quarter with Tori being the highest penalized player with 5 contacts, Sara 3, Ebony 2 and Sharna and Meg 1 each. Sharna was playing a clean game in GD but at times was too loose underestimating the strategic roll the GA had to play with the feeding to the GS. There were 5 misses this quarter, 4 from our goalers and 1 from their goaler, and no rebounds were taken. Something that we need to address.
We were still in chase mode 16 -17.
This quarter was a goal for goal scoring quarter and the only run was a 2 goal run to GN in the end of the quarter. This is the quarter where we could have won the game. Very few goals were scored with lots of errors but we lost 6 -7. There were 4 opportunities in the third where we made errors that cost us goals. We missed 2 shots, gave away our C pass, a WA break and a GA break. That’s 3 immediate centers that were lost, a very costly error.
Min shot 5 from 7 and Ebony 1 from 3. 4 missed goals that were not followed up with a rebound shows that we need work with positioning. Bron started to take C pass receives as Ebony was now being defended by the GD. Our choice of pass was a lot clearer and we made sure that they ended up in hands. Meg threw 3 ineffective passes in the third mostly because of a rush of blood and unsteady feet.
The defensive full court pressure remained strong and this saw Bron and Meg take an intercept. Sharna was strong aerially and took 2 intercepts, one in which she took a big knock for. Our chances were there with these intercepts but unfortunately we didn’t make the most of these opportunities. Tori, Sharna and Sara all did the work to get a deflection from their opponent and this slowed down their fast moving attacking line.
Tori and Sara wore the most amount of contacts (4) and obstructions (2) because the footwork wasn’t quick enough and this saw them shove through their opponent rather than cleanly come through for an intercept and the recovery was delayed causing the obstruction. Very few goals were scored and the 3rd quarter score was 22 -24.
We were outscored 9 -8 in the last quarter. Dropping 1 goal each quarter is what in the end meant we lost the game. Our goalers did the work shooting well Min 5 /6 and Ebony 3 /4 and worked hard to find available space in our ring. Ebony was dominant under our ring rebounding 2 missed shots. Angie in WA took the bulk of C passes with 6 of the 8 and she made best use of that work. Angie and Ebony each threw an ineffective pass in the last which normally we would be very happy with but unfortunately these passes came at the wrong time in the game. The only 2 turnovers for the quarter also came from attackers with Eb and Min making the wrong choice at an important time.
We took 0 intercepts which I think is the first time this year that we have played a quarter without an intercept. This game needed a hero and our defenders needed to be the ones to hunt and get that match winning intercept. Deflections were high but fatigue meant that they weren’t intercepts. Sharna in GD and Sam in GK both deflected 2 balls and Bron in WD another. These were real chances. GN missed 5 shots and Sharna fought hard to rebound 4 of those while Sam protected space. Some great defensive work was being done and this forced them to turn over the ball we just didn’t do enough to make sure that we were the team that scored from it.
We were matched well all over the court with a strong opposition. Although our stats look reasonably good and our efforts commendable we were probably the team who made the most amount of errors for the game. The ‘coach killers’ in the 3rd quarter in particular, were the ones that should not happen at our level. A respectable loss 30 -33.
In the first quarter: they had a 5 goal run, we responded with a 3 goal run and then they responded with a 2 goal run.
2nd quarter: they had an early 4 goal run, we responded with 6 goals.
3rd quarter: Goal for goal quarter with GN finishing with a 2 goal run.
4th quarter: they had a 2 goal run early, then a 3 goal run, we responded with 2 goals.

Round 14
Winchelsea B (42) V Bannockburn (33)
We didn’t get off to a good start turning the ball over unnecessarily in attack 10 times (Ange , Sam, Meg 3, Sarah 1) and struggling to adjust to the whistle in defence. Lucky we have some clever players that knew to call a strategic time out giving us time to regroup. We went back onto the court and picked the game up with a more determined attacking end that valued possession and delivered the ball accurately to Min and she didn’t let us down shooting 6 from 8.
We were struggling to get free for the center passes and that meant that they had to be shared by Ange and Sarah for this quarter. Only 1 intercept was taken this quarter (Meg), no deflections and only 1 defensive rebound (Tori). Our defense end were being beaten and were not winning us any extra ball. The whistle was running red hot as 16 contacts were called with Tori, Sara and Meg taking the bulk with 4 each followed by 3 contacts from Sam and 1 Ange. We just couldn’t get it right. We were in chase mode down 6 -10.
We outscored Bannockburn 13 to 9 in the second quarter, this was a good sign because it showed we were building into the game. Bron moved into WA and Sharna moved into GD, this had an instant impact especially because they had time to watch the first quarter and see what needed to change for the second.
Min was serviced several times by all feeder and because she had her eye in she didn’t disappoint shooting 100% with 13 from 13. Sarah took almost all C passes as Bron was double teamed but Bron adjusted and was a short option for the second phase pass. Bron dominated the feeds folloed by Meg and then Sarah. Although Sarah didn’t shoot this quarter she was responsible for 7 assists to Min.
We were not overly effective with our passes throwing 8 away. The 8 came from all over the court which was a little troubling because that means we were giving the ball away in every third. Meg threw 3, almost all on the C passes, Tori and Sarah 2 and Sharna 1.
We were not getting the gains we are used to from our defenders but their goalers were quite strong and very accurate. Good footwork meant that Sharna and Sara were able to take an intercept each and send it down the court. Tori adjusted her timing and tipped 2 balls and slowed Bannockburn’s run down and Bron also gave good chase and deflected a pass. Tori and Sharna worked hard for a good position under the ring and rebounded 2 of their 5 missed shots. The whistle wasn’t blown as much this quarter, this is because we adjusted AND the change of umpires. A good fight back and we went into the second half 19 all.
This was the quarter that won us the game. Bannockburn was kept to just 5 goals while we went on to score 14 goals. Min shot 11 from 12 and Sarah started to make her presence known shooting 3 from 4. Bron and Sarah continued to share the C passes keeping Bannockburn on their toes. Minimized our turnovers this quarter to just 4 and this is significant and the score line indicates this. Ange in C threw 2 and Bron threw 2.
There was only 1 intercept taken this quarter (Min) so it shows that our defensive pressure forced them to turn over the ball with missed goals, balls being thrown out of court or held balls. Sharna dominated rebounds with 3 of their 5 missed goals. Sam did a good job to block out the GS and make it hard for her to be available for an easy pass into the ring. The umpires equally started allowing contesting as the contact count and obstruction was much lower this quarter (Sharna 3, Sara 3). We were building into the game and the 3 quarter time score line showed that. 33 – 24.
A pleasing win but not a great quarter with both teams scoring 9 all. Hopefully the lead we had built into the last quarter meant that people were starting to enjoy the win and a bit of breathing room.
Min wasn’t delivered the ball as much this quarter as she was in the third, but shot accurately with 6 from 7 and Sarah continued to get involved in the ring shooting 3 from 4. Bron faded out a little in this quarter on the first phase pass but was there for the second phase. Generally our attackers valued possession and did all the basic right in the fourth quarter.
Our errors were minimized with 3 ineffective passes (Sara 2, Ange 1) and 3 turnovers (Sarah 2, Bron 1) but with the score line being as it was, it seems that scoring came off whoever’s center it was. Our gains came from 3 intercepts ( Sara, Min and Sarah) but none from our circle defenders, we only managed 1 deflection which came from Sharna and 3 rebounds out of their 5 missed goals ( Sharna 2, Sam 1). This wasn’t statistically our strongest quarter but it was enough to only drop 1 goal from our highest lead of 11. Good result ladies, well done and thank you Ebony for showing your team support from the side lines.

Round 13
Winchelsea B (30) V Thomson (36)
What happened? We lead the whole game until the last quarter and then an 8 goal turn around meant that we lost the 4 points.
The first quarter of netball was hard work. We were finding it a little hard to find space to attack and we adjusted a little too much to the wet, meaning our leads were a little short and the flow was stop start.
Sarah met her match with a face footed GD. Some sprints were won by Sarah and others by the GD. Sarah’s leads needed to change to keep the GD on her toes but this didn’t affect her shooting as she shot 2 from 2. Min was playing on a physical GK who liked to get her knees under Mins and this affected her shooting action as when she turned to shoot she needed to wait for the GK to remove herself from Mins space. Min shot 10 from 14, rebounding 2 of her missed shots.
Bron was not finding the center passes hard (5) but the 2nd phase balls was where we were held up. When Bron did hit the ring she dominated with the feeds into the goalers (8)Meg was patient with the C passes and is showing improvement in her choice of pass. Each attacker threw 1 ineffective pass in this quarter.
Defensively the work was being done with Alisha, Sara and Bron each taking an intercept and Tori getting her hands to a spoil, in theory giving us 3 more attempts at goals but unfortunately the 3 turnovers for the quarter were each thrown by the same players.
The whistle was blown quite a few times in the first quarter for contacts (8) and very few obstructions (1). We were contesting too late and /or not adjusting the defensive style of the umpire. We were up 12 -10.
The second quarter was played with a similar style. We were not necessarily winning/ keeping our center passes but getting a good turnover and scoring runs at goals. This was keeping us in the game. Min was our only goaler this quarter shooting 8 from 9. She adjusted her shooting style and the results came. Sarah played a support role in GA and at times did a good job of keeping her GD out of the ring but there were times in the second quarter where she just went missing.
We had fewer C passes hit our players in this quarter and coughed up the ball several times through over thinking the pass or over crowding to receive the pass. Our turnover count was climbing with 6 ineffective passes ( Meg 4, Bron 2) coming from our attacking players and 3 turnovers with 1 being a held, 1 an offensive contact and the other a stepped on pass in the mid court.
This quarter majority of the feeds were coming from Meg and Bron is WA became the secondary option. Our WA was being held back by the WD and our options for a pass were being limited.
We only took 3 intercepts this quarter giving us less opportunity to score. Alisha was tight on the young GA getting in her head and forcing her to stay outside of the ring but knew when to hunt for an intercept (2). Sara tried to hunt but looked confused on the timing and was too afraid to hunt due the whistle being blown more frequently than other weeks. We got our hands to balls deflecting passes but 5 deflections ( Meg 2, Sarah, Sara, Min) that could have been intercepts show our fear to follow through and turn it into an intercept. Tori was doing a great job on the GS trying to mix up her defense to make the shooter think twice. There were no defensive rebounds taken this quarter but there was also no missed shots taken by Thomson.
The whistle wasn’t being blown so much in their goal ring this quarter and most of our contacts were called against Sara (3) Sarah (2) and Bron(1).
In the 3rd quarter both teams shot 8 goals each and it was our 2 goal lead from the first quarter that was keeping us up in this game. Min was still being delivered the same amount of ball even with the changes to the attacking line up. Min and Eb stayed out of each other’s way in the ring and there were no clashes. Min continued to shoot well shooting 7 from 8 and Ebony kept the GD busy but when she put up that 1 shot in the quarter made sure that it went in.
There were fewer C passes taken this quarter but Angie made it out easily for 4 of them. The 3 ineffective passes came from Ange, Eb and Sara. These passes were all ones that we stepped on with too quickly and realized an unbalances pass. We turned over the ball 4 times with just poor decision making and a panicked pass because the first drive was ignored. Sam threw 2, Ange 1 and Min 1.
Their attacking line up was starting to find their flow and we just became a little too scared of the whistle. This is the first game for the year where we had a quarter with 0 intercepts. Sara and Sam did deflect 2 passes but they did not end up in our hands so they could not convert into a goal. Tori was exceptionally strong under the ring out muscling the GA and GK for a rebound. Tori rebounded 3 of their 6 missed goals. Alisha and Sam didn’t combine as well as what I would have hoped in the GD, WD bibs. They both wanted the other to make the attacking drive and at times no one went. This stalled the play and let Thomson reposition defensively and force a turn over. They missed 6 goals this quarter and it was their first sign of inaccuracy but we just didn’t use this to our advantage.
Our contact count remained at 8 with Alisha being called for half of them. Fatigue and tight body work was taking its toll on Alisha and although Tori only contacted once her distance seemed to be the problem getting most of our obstructions.
We were up by 2, 28 – 26.
The last quarter was a mess. We only scored 2 goals. We have not had a game this year where we have scored so little goals in one quarter. The last quarter over the last 11 rounds has been our strength but today it was our weakness. They outscored us 10 – 2. An embarrassing last quarter. They swapped their GA into GS but this should not have affected our attacking end. It did however give them a strong option under the ring that we did not adjust to.
There are no positives that came from this quarter. We threw 6 bad passes (3 Ange, 2 Sara, 1 Sarah) and turned over the ball 3 times. Alisha intercepted 2 passes but they were clearly sent back up there end quickly. We deflected 4 passes that clearly went back to Thomson for a quick score. We took no rebounds and they missed 5 shots and only fed 2 balls into our ring. If Thomson was more accurate we would have lost by a lot more.
Our contact count was the same as the other quarters (8) and obstructions had increased slightly. The team line up who were on the court did not stand up and take control when it counted in this quarter. Similar experience to our grand final match in 2014. Surely someone noticed the quick change in scoring and knew that they needed to be strategic about what to do next. When we are pushed we need to push back and no fall apart. Today we fell apart and it cost us.
In the first quarter: 1x 3 goal run, 4 goal run. They had a 4 goal run
2nd quarter: they had a 4 goal run, we responded with a 5 goal run.
3rd quarter: we had a 4 goal run, they had no runs.
4th quarter: They had a 5 goal run and a 3 goal run. We had no runs.

Round 12
Winchelsea B (54) V Anakie (13)
The game didn’t feel like a thrashing from the Bench because Anakie made us work for each and every shot. Anakie scored off the first center pass and this had us a little scared because we were turning the ball over so much that it took about 3 minutes for us to get the next goal and then 5 more followed for us. Min shot accurately with 12 from 15 dominating under the ring while Sarah only put up 2 shots but her accuracy was not what we wanted.
Bron got out easily for the C passes and the 2nd phase pass to Meg or Sarah was accurate. Meg and Sarah didn’t always make the right choice or execute the pass well with Sarah and Meg throwing 3 ineffective passes. 6 bad passes was too many for the quarter. Bron and Meg fulfilled their role with a high amount of feeds into the goalers equally sharing this stat.
Defensively we were tight taking lots of clean intercepts (6). Meg had a great recovery with 3, Sam 2 and Sara 1. Sarah, Sam and Bron also got their fingers to a spoil each. The ball just wasn’t penetrating their goal third enough for Tori to get involved in the game so a new goal was set for her. The GS for Anakie did all their shooting with 3 from 3, if they were able to deliver the ball to her accurately they would have more goals on the board. It was the full court pressure that made sure that this didn’t happen and we had a 12 -3 lead.
Of course changes were made in the second quarter because we knew we could and that it wouldn’t affect the outcome of 4 points coming our way. We didn’t make the same mistake as we made in the first quarter and we scored the first goal for the quarter, they then responded with a goal and then 6 more our way shared between Ebony and Min. Min shot accurately with 9 from 10 and Ebony contributed with 7 from 10.
We were finding our C passes a little more difficult to get with Alisha having to take 2 and Ebony taking 4, our 2nd phase was good but as our passes was passing on the run there was more power behind the ball and the timing was quicker. The receiver didn’t expect this and this caused a few turnover, particularly in our goal circle. The team had 6 ineffective passes with Angie throwing 3, Tori, Min and Bron throwing 1 each.
Anakie had many more attempts at goals this quarter with a positional change with their best player moving from GK to GA. They put up 8 shots but with the pressure from Alisha and Sam missed 3 of those goals. They were finding the space to move the ball a little better especially when we started playing off them. The introduction of the GA also had a huge influence on this but Alisha did a great job at manning up on her and making it hard for her to enter the ring. While that work was being done Tori was sitting at the back waiting for a spoil. She deflected 3 passes and took the only defensive rebound in this quarter. The team defensive work was still tight in the second with Ange, Eb, Bron and Sara all taking an intercepts. It is this pressure that in tight situations will win us games.
Anakie shot 5, taking them to 8 for the half, while we had a good 16 goals taking us to 28.
So a few more changes were made for the 3rd quarter with Sam and Alisha partnering in the defensive ring, Ange, Meg and Sarah taking the mid court and our goaling combination remained the same.
Min and Ebony are starting to form a nice goaling team offering a different style to Min and Sarah. The only way this is going to develop is through court time and opposition like Anakie allow us to work on this. Min shot 13 from 15 and Ebony shot 4 from 6, accuracy when playing against open age players is something the Ebony needs to continue to work on. Ebony and Min were both strong under the ring rebounding 2 missed shots. Again C pass receives were shared between our WA and our GA, although this is a good thing we need to work on the WA dominating on the C passes and the GA assisting when needed.
We turned over the ball 5 times this quarter with Ange throwing 1, Ebony 1 and Sarah 3 bad pass for the quarter. This is not a stat for concern as we saw a lot of the ball this quarter. Our mid court combination, whatever it is, seems to turn over the ball an equal amount of times.
Alisha, Sam and Meg was another new combination in our defensive line. No matter what changes they made our defensive work was strong with Alisha staying tight and Sam looking for the spoils. Alisha intercepted 3 balls as did Sam. This combination was tough and hard working Alisha boxed out the strong GA and outrebounded her 3 times and Sam moved quick after the 3 feet mark and rebounded 2 shots. Contacts and Obstructions were low because Anakie gave us enough time to turn and get the right mark. Our defenders kept them to 2 and we powered on with 17 goals. A pleasing margin of 35 goals heading into the last.
Our last quarter wasn’t as strong as what it has been in the past. We only scored 9 to their 3. Ebony and Min had a game slump with Eb shooting at 57% and Min at 33%. Sarah had a good goaling quarter shooting 3 from 3. We threw 4 bad passes shared between 4 players ( Ange, Eb, Sara, Meg) and we turned over the ball a game high of 6 ( Ange 4, Eb and Min 1 ).
We hit a game high with 9 intercepts, Meg smashed it with 4, Tori and Alisha 2 each and Ebony again with 1. With all this work the score line should be higher but it’s wasn’t. On top of the 9 intercepts we took 3 defensive rebounds, what did we do with the 12 extra balls?
This is the first game that our last quarter was our weakest. Lets hope that this is because everyone was having so much fun that we went with the flow…

Round 11
Winchelsea B (48 )V Geelong West (22)
We got off to a very slow start missing 7 goals in the first quarter, Min shot 7 from 12 and Sarah 2 from 4. Geelong West happened to miss the same amount which meant that our accuracy wasn’t too costly. We were making some poor decisions and not executing the pass accurately. Our lineup was not a usual line up but it was just as strong as any other line up we have. Our defence end were a taller line up and we were aiming to shut down the ball before it hit their goal ring. We delayed the pass with 4 intercepts coming from our front line (Shana 2, Sam 1, Sara 1) but it was making it in there a few more times than I would have liked.
We were strong with the rebounds with Min taking 3, Tori 2 and Sam 1. Considering there was 13 missed goals the count should have been a little higher. Ange was on the ball defensively deflecting 2 passes in our goal third and her team mates supported her by playing tight defence. We were working hard to make up for our silly errors. We had a small 2 goal lead 8-6.
I changed a few positions because that was the game plan, but it also was the plan considering the score line was not where I would have liked it. Meg came on into WD, Sharna went into GK, Eb came on into GA and Bron went into WA. Again we started the quarter taking the first 2 goals which got us off to a great start and gave us a confidence boost. They shot 1 and we responded with 5 in a row, then 3. Unfortunately we let it slip for 2 minutes where they scored the next 3, lucky for us we fought back and finished the quarter with a 3 goal run.
We scored 14 and limited them to only 5 goals, a great effort from all 7 players. Min steadied and shot more accurately with 11 from 16 while Ebony played a supporting role shooting 3 from 4. The feeding into the ring was controlled and at a slower pace so that the opening would be clear when it was there. Bron tried to drive to the top for a mini reset and this allowed Min to reposition for a closer shot.
Our intercept and deflection count was lower but this is partly to do with the fact that they threw away the ball themselves due to our defensive pressure. Geelong West missed 5 goals and Sharna rebounded 2 of those shots. Sharna played an ‘off the body’ defensive stance on the GS and this allowed everyone to pressure their own player and Sharna was able to hunt for an intercept. Sam played a supporting role out front and when in the ring called some swaps that also saw Geelong turn over the ball. A strong quarter from us and we were up 22-11 heading into the second half.
In the 3rd I changed the goalers around with Sarah going into GS and Eb stayed in GA. This brought a fast GS to our game and a good drive out to assist out attackers. Ange went into C, Sharna out to GD and Tori back into GK.
Tori watched attentively in the 2nd quarter and came on and did what I asked. Unfortunately for Tori they changed goalers but Tori was very quick to adjust and play the tight defence that was again needed. We again had some nice 3 -4 goal runs while they had no runs and only shot 4 goals. Our defence brought us 4 intercepts (Eb 2, Ange 1, Bron 1) and 3 deflections all coming from Sharna
The new line up meant that we did not score as many goals as we would normally but that wasn’t due to accuracy but due to turnovers before the shot was taken. Eb shot well with 5 /6 and Sarah shot 5 /8. We turned over the ball 6 times all in our attack ( Ange 4, Sarah 1, Bron 1). We scored a respectable 10 to their 5.
Another structural change because we could. Min back on into GS, Bron and Sarah shared WA, Meg and Ange sharing the C and Sam back on into GD. Like every game this year, the last quarter is the quarter where the stronger more skilled team pushes through and this is what happened. We scored 16 to their 6. Bench time did Min well because she came on and shot at 84% with 11 from 13 and Eb shot 6 from 7. This accuracy is what saw us blow the score line out.
Our defensive line was great again with Sara and Sam taking 2 intercepts and Tori 1. Sam and Tori worked well together under the post and protected our rebounds taking 3 of the 5. Everyone was supporting each other and backing each other up for the loose balls. They had a 2 goal run but the rest of the quarter belonged to us. A good win which will give us a nice percentage. 48 -22. We sit 1 game clear in 2nd.

Round 10
Winchelsea B (40) V Corio (16)
We started a little rusty taking a long time to score 2 goals. It took 5 minutes for both teams to score 2 goals. An injury time was called by us to regroup and remind the players of the game plan.
In the first quarter we were highly inaccurate shooting at 57%, this is because their defenders were reasonable, they were obstructing and we just weren’t finishing off. Our C passes were shared by WA and GA (Sarah and Ange) with neither player dominating. We were costly in the choice of pass with 6 ineffective passes (3 Meg, 3 Ange) and 2 turnovers (Sarah and Min). They were setting up a zone in our goal third and because we were not settled for the release of the pass that forced an ineffective pass or turnover.
Defensively we were really strong, Sam intercepted 4 passes, Sharna 1 and Bron 1, Corio were struggling to penetrate their goal ring. We deflected the ball 6 times (Sharna 2, Sam 2, Sarah 1 and Bron 1), which is good but because we are working on 2 handed intercepts at training we need to convert these to intercepts.
Clearly we picked up our game and started applying the game plan and that saw a run of 7 goals and the first quarter siren. We were up 9 -2.
Our second quarter was more consistent all around. We shot at 70% with mini shooting 6 from 8 and Sarah 4 from 6. Both not goaling as well as they normally would but Corio’s 2 best players were circle defenders. Our attackers valued possession this quarter with only 3 turnovers from Ange, Sarah and Meg. Ange and Meg were finding space easily and looking for 2nd phase movement. Sarah was on the most experienced defender and matched her well.
Sharna took 2 intercepts and Bron 1 intercept this quarter with their tight relentless defence. This hard work from the back is what gives our goalers the extra opportunity to convert. Our defenders started taking chances and got finger tips to balls causing them to turn over the ball 5 times. Sharna and Sam deflected 2 passes and Bron 1. The pressure was tight in and outside their ring and this gave Sharna and Sam the confidence to finish off and rebound 3 missed shots (Sharna 2, Sam 1). Our defenders were certainly not being beaten.
Our goal run only came in the last couple of minutes of the quarter. 19- 6.
The lineup changed for the second half again and Ebony took the court in GS, with Sarah taking the lead in GA. Our goaling hit a percentage low in this quarter with a collective 68% accuracy. Ebony shot 4 from 5 and Sarah shot 4 from 7. The workload was higher for the goalers but their job is to finish off. Ange stepped up and took control in WA taking majority of our C passes. Corio were slowly slowing up and their defensive pressure was not so effective this quarter. We only threw 2 ineffective passes (Ange, Sara 1) but turned over the ball 3 times (Sarah 2, Sara1).
Our whole court defensive pressure remained strong and we took a game high 8 intercepts. Bron took 4, Sara 3 and Tori in GK 1. Because they were fatiguing this gave our players a chance to hunt and again a game high of 8 deflections (Sam 4, Bron 4, Tori 1), I can’t wait to see these turn into intercepts. We had a strong lead of 15. 27 -12.
Another reshuffle of our line, because we could and we pressed on. Min shot 10 from 14, seeing a lot of ball this quarter. Ebony received the ball but was less accurate this quarter shooting 3 from 5. Ebony was used 4 times on our center passes and Bron in WA only 2. Sharna also had to come out and help.
We valued possession more this quarter only throwing 1 bad pass, and turning over the ball 3 times and again all from attackers. When the score line looks comfortable attackers tend to take more chances, and this is what I think we did.
Defensively Meg stepped up and intercepted 3 passes while Sharna and Sara backed up with one each. Intercepts often come from hard defensive work up front allowing another player to come out for the intercept. Deflection count was good again with 6, but again these are possible intercepts (Sharna 3, Tori 1, Sara 1, Meg 1). We obstructed more than we contacted which shows our timing was quite good but our recovery not so great. We were tough under the ring up both ends with Min rebounding 3 shots and Tori another 3 shots. We scored 13 this quarter and kept them to 4.

Round 9
Winchelsea (39) V Inverleigh (36)
We won this game from hard work, determination and a last 2 minute ‘put it all out there’ effort. We only managed to win one quarter and lucky for us, it was the last quarter and the one we needed to win.
Min was the key scorer this quarter shooting all of our 9 goals (81%). Sarah played a different role in GA this week offering and playing as another WA. This kept them guessing and double teaming Min while Sarah assisted bring the ball into our attack end and opening up our ring. We managed to work our way through our C passes and see the second phase drive but we wasted some scoring opportunities with some silly passes putting the receiver under too much pressure.
Our defensive pressure was good but it wasn’t doing the job of slowing down the feed to the very accurate GS and Tori was left exposed. We took only 2 intercepts and 1 deflection. This count was low because they were moving the ball too quickly down court and that gave us less opportunity to hunt. They only missed 2 shots, 1 of which Tori rebounded. The players on court hadn’t worked out how to get on top of their player. We were down 9 -10.
I made a defensive change with Sharna taking the GK bib and Bron came on into C. We were making some head way in defence with 7 intercepts (Bron 3,Sara 2, Sam 2) and 4 deflections ( Sharna 3, Sara 1) but threw too many ineffective passes ( Ange 3, Bron 2, Sarah 2 and Min 1). We were doing the hard work but not treasuring possession.
Min continued to shoot with accuracy at 88% (8 from 9) and Sarah only put up 2 shots but had a big work load out from. The shorter combination of Ange and Bron meant that we worked the ball down court with short and sharp passes with the occasional long one that opened up Min. We were doing the hard yards but needed to get rid of our ineffective passes if we were going to win. We scored 9 and they scored 10. No one made any head way and the score was 18 -20.
The team remained the same for the 3rd quarter. Min was shut down by being double teamed and this allowed Sarah to come into the game as a goaler. Sarah put up 7 shots and converted 3 (42%). She was just rushing shots as she was shooting with the adrenaline that she was running with.
They changed their defensive pressure on our c passes and this forced us to send the ball back to Sara and Sam on occasion. Lucky for us they were switched on and made use of the ball. This quarter seemed to slow down and both teams were coughing up the ball with silly mistakes.
Defensive pressure was amazing from all 7 players on the court and this allowed Sharna in the back to make use of that and she intercepted the ball 3 times. I felt like there were balls there to be deflected or intercepted from our back line but we hesitated at times and we were happy with the 3 foot mark. Sharna and Sam were getting ball, took a rebound each and stopped the GS but we just didn’t seem to be able to convert all these extra opportunities.
Bron called an ‘injury time’ so that she could catch her breath and Meg came on into C and Ebony into GA. Ebony played passively and it took her a little bit to step up to the tempo of the game but with her team mates around her she slowly came into the game. We were still sitting in the same position we were at the start of the game. Something had to give, one team had to break. 26 – 29 down.
The line up stayed the same for the 4th quarter because I felt like it was just a matter of time before one team steps up and I was confident that that would be us. Min came back into the game and shot 11 goals from 15 and Ebony shot 2 from 4. Although accuracy could have been better our goalers had to fight for the ball and missed those shots when the pressure was on.
The center passes were shared between Eb (5), Ange (3) and Sam (2), the pressure they applied was good but this is also a problem that one player isn’t dominating. Our defensive pressure was good through out the game but as the score line was close we needed someone to come out and have a go. Sara went down with 5 minutes to go and Bron came back on into WD. A position I knew she would smash because she had already beaten that WA when she was in C.
We didn’t make any headway until the final 3 minutes of the game. The A’s hit the sideline and revved up the girls on court, that complimented by our raging bench and a very supportive crowd the girls found the 8th player and stepped it up.
Sharna was smart enough to come out and have a crack and even though she didn’t get the ball, it made the GS weary of what was to come. Sam tightened up and took what could be a match winning intercept. Bron ducked and weaved and took the WA out of the game. Meg was steady and didn’t throw a bad pass on our very precious C passes, Ebony drove out for the C passes and drove in the ring to out up a shot at a crucial time, Ange guided the team through the dying minutes and lead the troops and Min took the pressure shot to win the game. It doesn’t matter how we got the 4 points today but in the end we were the better team under pressure and we won the game 39 – 36.

Round 8
Winchelsea B (57) V East Geelong (23)
East Geelong are sitting 9th on the ladder so we knew this game wasn’t going to stretch is too far but we wanted to avoid a bad quarter and make sure that we were putting 48minutes of good netball together. We broke their first C and sent the ball straight to our goalers where we had a missed shot, but great defence from the whole team meant that they turned over the ball and it was sent straight back to our ring. We had a 4 run before East Geelong responded. We were off to a great start.
We had 15 attempts at goals converting 11 while they had 8 attempts and converted 5. We had some really nice passages of play from our C to our WA to our GS and a point on the board. Sarah’s drives to the ring and then out, opened up our attack end and at times forced Ange to do the work to get on the ring and feed into the goalers while Bron made her way down. Min shot very well with 10 from 12 and Sarah shot 1 from 3.
Sara, Sam, Bron and Tori applied tight 1 on 1 pressure which is why the intercepts count for the quarter was a high 8 and deflections 3. Sara intercepted 5, Tori 2 and Bron 1, but it is what we did with those intercepts that counts. The team threw 3 ineffective passes and turned over 5 balls, spreading across 5 players. The turnovers were not due to the pressure they applied but a rush of blood. This was not costly because we had a good lead.
Heading into the second quarter the team remained unchanged. We powered on and scored 13 to their 9. Min remained accurate shooting 11/12 and Sarah shot more confidently with 2 from 3. This quarter Sarah dominated with the C pass receives while Angie knocked up the assists. Due to the high work load and again the rush of blood we threw 6 ineffective passes (Ange 2, Bron 2, Sarah 1 and Sam 1). Valuing possession was slipping as fatigue was slipping in.
Again Sara’s tight defence caused them to misthrow and she intercepted 2 while Tori read the play from behind and picked up 1 intercept as did Bron. Sam shadowed the GA well outside the ring getting a deflection just outside the ring and covered the rebounding space for Tori.
The only run we had this quarter was a 5 goal run which they responded not long after with a 4 goal run. During their run we forced them to make errors on 3 occasions but we did not score from them as we threw into hands and struggled to get the ball past the half way mark. We still had a good lead 24 -14.
I made changes for the second half as we had 4 fresh players just as strong as the 7 on court. Alisha and Sharna partnered up in defence, Ebony came on into GA, Meg took the C position and there was a reshuffle. Min dominated in the 3rd shooting 12/13 while Ebony took a little time to find her shot shooting 1/3. Their defenders were not very strong and Min exposed that and helped bring Ebony into the game. Due to some strong drives and patient feeding from Meg and Bron, we scored the first 6 goals for the quarter before they shot 2 in a row.
The ineffective passes came from 4 different players (Ebony, Sara, Meg and Bron) and 4 turnovers ( Min 2, Ebony 2) but they were not too costly because of the lead we had and the time in which they came.
Alisha was told to look for an intercept as the GK and that is exactly what she did getting her hands on 3 intercepts and 1 deflection. It was the tight pressure everyone else was applying that allowed her to come out hunting. Sara continued to try and get the intercepts but because she was tiring they becoming deflections. Sharna and Alisha combined well and were impressive as a defensive partnership. East Geelong was kept to only 5 goals this quarter.
A great lead heading into the last quarter 37 – 19.
Our best quarter for the game outscoring East 20 – 4. WOW! I am sorry I only saw a couple of minutes because I heard that there was magical plays. They scored their only 3 in the first couple of minutes and then it was all Winch for the next 18 goals. Ebony stepped up and shot at 83% with 10 from 12 and Min shot at 90%. Sarah in WA smashed the center passes taking 7 while Ebony helped with the workload taking 4. There was only 1 ineffective pass this quarter which is excellent but it also shows how East Geelong gave up while we pushed on.
6 intercepts for the quarter with 3 from Meg , 2 from Alisha and 1 from Ebony. 5 deflections from Meg, Sharna, Ebony and Alisha. We just weren’t going to take our foot off the pedal. The changes throughout the whole game were clearly effective because we just didn’t let any opportunity pass us by. We need to take this into our game next week.

Round 7
Winchelsea Blues B (23) V Bellpost Hill (40)
The first quarter was a really scrappy quarter from us. Even though it was wet and every Bell Post Hill player was taller than us, we continued to throw long passes and lead only for long passes. They scored the first 3 goals, 2 off our center passes. A strategic injury time gave us time to regroup. I also would like to apologise for losing my shit in the talk about ‘moving forward’, I was very frustrated, but no excuse.
Min was kept quiet the whole quarter because she had no choice but to sit back and wait for the ball to make it into the goal third. We threw at least 5 ineffective passes and we turned over the ball 3 times, again from the attack end, all in 12 minutes, and all coming from our attack end. We were putting each other under too much pressure by all making long leads and forcing a pass that we knew wasn’t right for the weather. This cost us 8 goals on the score board.
Defensively we took no intercepts, no rebounds and only 2 deflections, which came from Tori and Angie. The pressure we were applying was not tight enough and we weren’t reading the play well enough. Without keeping our C passes and getting a turnover ball from BPH, we didn’t have much of a chance of winning the quarter. The score line was at a very low 5 -6.
After a reboot and 1 change to the GD bib (Sam on, Sharna off) we were ready to put it all together. Unfortunately we didn’t protect our first 2 centers and like the 1st quarter turned them over. BPH scored the first 2 goals for the quarter. Lucky for us we switched on, started offering short and forward and was able to peg back the score.
Min saw more ball shooting 7 from 8 and Sarah put up 5 shots, converting 3. Angie was doing a great job at offering forward and moving the ball down court one pass at a time after Sarah did most of the work to take the C passes. The teams ineffective passes were limited this quarter but all 3 came from the same player, turnovers we couldn’t afford.
We managed 1 intercept this quarter but could had a few more only the umpire made sure that didn’t happen. On a positive we rebounded 2 balls, one up each end from Tori and Min. Which we protected and turned into a goal. A 6 goal run from us in the final minutes of the quarter saw us peg back their lead and we went into half time a draw 15 all.
So I had a coaching dilemma – do I change the team and see what else we can put out there or do I leave a combination that has fought back? With the bench being just as strong as the players on court I made changes. Alisha went into GK in an attempt to hunt for intercepts before they made it to the tall GS, Sharna went into WD in an attempt to slow up the feeds to the shooter with her long stretching arms, Bron in C so that she could make lots of short sharp leads down the court and apply more defensive pressure and the attack end stayed the same. We just needed to get some defensive balls.
These changes clearly did not work. It looked ok in the first 2 and a half minutes and then it all went south. We didn’t keep our C passes, we didn’t match them, we didn’t stop the feeds into the ring, we chased them down the court we didn’t call time to re group even after they scored 10 goals in a row- they went on to score 12 before the siren saved us.
Across the board there are very few stats for any Winch player. This does not mean that you did your job, it means that we went missing.
Sarah shot at 50% (1 /2) and Min shot at 25% (1/3). We took 6 C passes before we turned them over, we turned over the ball 4 times all in attack again and our contact and obstruction count was very low. The only positive stat for the quarter was that Bron deflected the ball 3 times- but we did nothing with it. We were just absent this quarter and let the poor umpiring dictate how poorly we played and how many goals we were going to let them have. We were in chase mode 17- 30 and the last quarter came about how much we could close the gap.
I made another team change as the third quarter was ineffective. Tori came back on to GK, Sharna went into GD, Meg into WD, Ebony into GS and Sara into C. We matched them better and lost the quarter 6- 10 but that is a lot less embarrassing than 2 -15.
Both goalers were inaccurate with Sarah shooting 4 /7 @57% and Ebony 2 /4 @ 50%. With accurate shooting we would have won this quarter, so the attacking improved.
Meg and Sara took an intercept and Sharna got a deflection, much better than previous quarters. The GS had to wait patiently for the ball to be lobbed to her and when she did her accuracy declined in the 4th. We went goal for goal for most of this quarter or 2 goals for 2 goals and drew the last quarter.
We started poorly and had 1 really bad quarter and this cost us the game .

Round 6
Winchelsea B (50) V Belmont Lions (34)
A great start for Winch with the Blues scoring the first 3 goals before Belmont hit the score board. Although most plays looked smooth, there were quite a few turn overs in our attacking end with ineffective passes and turn overs coming mainly from Ange and Sarah. They were feeding well but made a few bad decisions with the pass that cost us another 5 or so goals. Min rewarded the hard work out front by shooting 7 from 8 goals and Sarah brought herself into the game early shooting 5 from 6 shots, a massive improvement on her last couple of games where this was her total score.
The defence was strong from all players and it allowed Bron, Sarah and Tori to take an intercept in the first quarter. Sharna applied tight pressure with 2 deflections and the only rebound for the quarter while Tori mopped up in the back line moving her feet quickly to take the GS option out of the play. To the teams credit Belmont didn’t get one run on us this quarter while we had 2, 3 goal runs giving us a handy first quarter lead of 4 goals. The score board read 12 – 8.
A nice lead that I knew we could build on. The only change for the 2nd quarter was Sara into C and Meg off. This was strategic as the sun was shining and fatigue could play a part in the end result. We scored the first ball for the quarter and again had 2, 3 goal runs this quarter. The defence was fantastic and Bron hustled the center passes committing to the WA first drive. This paid off at the start of the quarter but once the WA caught on she changed her play. Belmont didn’t have a run again in the second quarter. We started and finished with the 3 goal runs which showed Belmont that we meant business to start the quarter and we finished with a run before they scored just before the siren.
Ange, Sara and Sarah had great supply into Min and read her holds, particularly her front holds well. This gave Min the steadier to turn and shoot at 90% with 10 from 11 shots. Sarah’s work out front was quite hard and as a result the goaling accuracy slipped but at least she put the shots up scoring 2 from 5 shots. We had 6 ineffective passes this quarter, all coming from our attack end. We need to keep practicing finishing off the passes and reading our team mates holds and drives. Sarah, Sara and Tori each took an intercept which brought the intercept count up to 6 for the quarter. That’s a high 6 more attempts at goals due to the defensive effort of our team. Sharna and Tori were applying tight one on one pressure which allows for tips and deflections. Tori was getting tips to balls and her team mates were there to mop up. As a team we were light on with rebounding, something we need to work on at training. A strong quarter for the Blues and we had a nice lead 24 -16.
A 4 player change for the second half- Alisha went into WD, Ebony into GA, Sam into GD and Meg back on into C. Fresh legs threw Belmont and we scored the first 2 goals of the quarter. Belmont did get a 2 goal run in the last 2 minutes of the quarter but again we had a 3 goal run and a 2 goal run giving us a bigger leading margin. Min did a great job bringing Ebony into the game and steading the attack end with all the changes to the team. Her shooting was spot on this quarter again and the GK struggled to find a defensive style that worked on Min. Min shot at 91% (11/12) and Ebony was brining herself into the game shooting at 50% (3/6). Ange continued to dominate on the C pass receives and threw less passes away due to her steading and driving onto the ring. Our team turn overs were minimized and we valued possession.
With tight one on one pressure our intercepts were restricted to only 2 ( Sam 1, Min 1) but we forced them to turn over the ball. Their GA missed both shots she put up but the GS was accurate shooting 10 from 10. We had brought the lead out to 11 and went into the last quarter 38-27.
Who could forget the 8 goal run to start the 4th quarter. Shana came on into GK, Sarah into WA and Sara into C for half of the quarter. Sharna picked up where Tori left off and also did a great job. Sharna took a rebound and an intercept on the GS which rattled the GS and she had her worst shooting quarter shooting 4 from 7. Sam kept her player out and hustled her outside the ring. The 2 girls combined well in the circle, which I would expect as they have played together before. Sara and Bron did a great job in the C bringing 2 different styles to the game, which confused their C. Not too many turnovers and strong attack meant that the ball travelled quickly into our goal ring where Min was ready for it. Alisha hustled the WA looking like she hasn’t had ‘time off’ the game. Alisha provided some strong drives down court, just as she tired the passes became a little soft.
Sarah offered some great drives to the ring and continued to read Min well and when the ball was turned over was strong on defence trying to get the ball back for us. Ebony was trying to find space outside the ring to drive but at times worked the base line a little too much and the strong GD started knocking her about a bit. Once Eb found good space in the ring the ball was delivered well to her and she put up the shot. At times the shot was too far and this impacted on her accuracy shooting at 50% with 3 from 6. Min was great again with mostly front holds shooting 9 from 11. Great service to Min and she did her job finishing off.
An outstanding team effort that saw us back in form with a 14 goal winning margin, the final score 50 – 34.

Round 5
Winch (28) V Werribee (27)
WOW!! Another close win in absolutely terrible weather.
It was windy and cold but our girls took to the court and put up a fight the whole game. 7 all in the first quarter, down by 2 at half time, up by 2 at 3 quarter time and a win by 1 goal.
The game started off a little slow with both teams trying to adapt to the very wet court, we were not finding Min easily enough as we were trying to force the ball in but the wind took charge over a few, we knew we needed to communicate with eachother to throw short and sharp passes which means working hard to come forward. Min needed to play front when the wind picked up as lobs were not working as well. Once we worked this out we could play our game style.
Our defenders Sharna, Sam and Tori worked hard tipping the ball and rebounding missed shots but did not convert down the court every time as Werribee were strong through the middle managing to tap and intercept passes. Sara and Bron shared the WD bib and did a great job to apply pressure over their opponent causing drop balls and bad passes.
Meg, Angie, Grovesy and Sarah's driving down the court throught the game was fantastic, some small errors and unfortunate passes made us work hard to get the ball back. Ebony was fantastic in GA controlling the ball down the court, her height was an asset in the ring today, well done.
BEST: 3 MEG 2 SARA 1BRON
Round 4
Winchelsea Blues (33) North Geelong (30)
Wow, what an unnecessarily close game…
North Geelong scored the first 5 goals before we had a single shot, that’s 3 of our C passes lost before the ball even hit the ring. Some very simple errors were being made and this was costing us. Min was holding a strong position in the ring but the ball being fed to her was not connecting accurately as the passes were off. The passes being turned over were because they were too big, deflected or simply thrown into an opponent’s hands, we even took a rebound but a foot over the line and we lost the ball. It was becoming a very messy quarter. Lucky Ang used her initiative and called time, the team needed to regroup, forget about what happened, play beyond the physical play of North Geelong and get our game back on track. Back on court and the flow down the court was a little better, but our shooting was not. Min shot 3 from 5 and Sarah shot 1 from 4.
Changes were made in the second quarter with Sara coming into WD, Lil in GD and Bron and Sharna taking the bench. Sharna came off to watch the play, as she was not setting up any plays from the defense end and seemed to be calling from behind and Bron wasn’t clearing leads or assisting in breaking the play of North Geelong.
Tori played strong in GK tipping balls and taking an intercept, giving us a few chances to catch them. We had some nice plays in this quarter, one from Meg to Ang which was connected with a beautifully timed lead from Sarah who passed to Min. This looked like a well-oiled system. This passage of play got the adrenalin pumping! We shot the next 4 goals which was a great start to getting us back in the race. Min shot 8 and Sarah 2.
Going into the second half, we didn’t start as well as what I had hoped. Sarah was cluttering the space for WA and C, and this lead to trouble with Angie and Sara finding space to drive down into. Once we identified this, Sarah solely took the GA role and kept her player out of the play and this gave Sarah the space and chance to be make a strong explosive lead into the ring. Sara bodied up better against the C, which made for quite a few physical plays, both C’s got hot headed which was not working for either of their games and they started to get sloppy. Sharna came back on but was making the same mistakes, this was causing the problems we had in the first quarter. Min’s accuracy improved shooting 6 from 8 and Sarah shot 1 from 3. The score difference was 5 but it was well within our reach. 20 – 25.
Sam took the court for her first game of the season in GD, and what a great return it was, she dominated! Sitting off for 3 /4 gave her the chance to see what needed to be done and she went out and did it. Sam took some much needed intercepts which her team mates looked after and converted to goals. The team was determined to win this game back, and with improved accuracy from Min shooting 11 from 13 and Sarah 2 from 3 we were back on track. Angie was strong and controlled the court with some well timed drives which opened up the attack end. With Meg’s return to C this rattled her opponent as she was clean and played off the ball and this gave us the edge we needed. A very close game where we proved to be the stronger, more controlled team and this is why we took the 4 points and the win.
VOTES:
3 – Angie 2 - Min 3 – Sam – she only played 1 quarter but changed the game!
Round 3: Winchelsea 24 V Bannockburn 36
We had a horrible start with Banoockburn scoring the first 3 goals. During this scoring run we had 4 opportunities to score and match them goal for goal but turned over the ball with some sloppy play, dropped balls and bad movement. We dug deep and responded with 3 goals leveling the score and making this a competitive quarter. Our errors just continued and they had another run of 3 and then another 4. With 11 attacking turnovers ( Min 3, Meg 5, Ange 2, Sarah 1) and 6 turn overs thrown by our defense (Sharna 2, Tori 3, Bron 1))we were just giving them the game. Our errors cost us 17 goals in 1 quarter.
All goalers on the court shot at 100% but our volume just wasn’t high enough with us finishing on 5 and Bannockburn on 11.
Sara took the C bib and Meg came off for the second quarter. This gave us the drive and defensive pressure we needed. It was a much better quarter from us winning the quarter 9 – 6. Min continued to shoot with accuracy with 8 from 8 while Sarah put up the one shot accurately. We continued to give Bannockburn the opportunity to outscore us with 8 turn overs but this quarter 3 came from our attack end and 5 from the defensive end.
The defensive pressure outside and inside their ring proved to be very effective because their accurate goalers were very inaccurate this quarter with the GS scoring 2 from 5 and the GA 4 /7. The quarter was filled with runs of 2 from both teams. This means C were not valued, turn overs costly and volume not enough. We had pegged it back 14 -17.
The third quarter saw both teams shoot inaccurately and there was a lot of whistle. Sarah didn’t put up 1 shot this quarter so that left the goaling to Min. She shot 7/10 breaking her perfect run for the first half. Our turn overs were less but we still turned over the ball 6 times. Bannockburns defensive pressure wasn’t that strong it was our decision making and ability to pass and accurate pass to the target.
Sharna and Tori were trying a few different strategies but didn’t seem to find their flow. We were put out of play quite a few times but through the efforts of getting a deflection caused them to again miss some shots. The GS shot 4 /6 and the GA 3/4. Bannockburn were the only side to get a run this quarter but when they did they made us pay with a run of 4. We shot 6 to their 7. We were giving good chase but they still had that first quarter lead 21 – 25.
Heading into the last quarter I thought we still had a chance to win the game. Sara was spent and had to come off, Ange came off, Bron moved to C and Ebony took the court in GA. I don’t know what happened, we fell to pieces. We only had 4 attempts at goals while they had 13 attempts. Again we had the opportunity to be competitive but turnovers crept back in our game and they took advantage. We turned over the ball 7 times. We should have exposed the small GK and fed the ball into Min for some quick goals, but instead we threw the ball way off mark, not even making the distance.
Defensively we were smashed in the last. First ball pressure needed to come earlier to eat up time and to break their 9 goal scoring run. It was like we didn’t realize how quickly they were scoring and how quickly that score line was being blown out. The GS shot 5 /6 and the GA 3 /7. We clearly didn’t rebound the 5 missed shots because that would have given us more opportunities to score.
The first and last quarter cost us the blow out and an uncharacteristic 12 goal loss.

The first quarter was a very competitive quarter from both sides. The skill level was matched and we knew that we were in for a competitive game.
Our attacking line up of Ange, Meg, Tay and Sarah was a new line up but it didn’t show on the court. We had no problems finding the connections and penetrating the goal circle. Tayla was fed well by all 3 feeders and Sarah worked around Tay combining well for some assists. Angie and Meg were a little costly with the turn over count with 3 each, all being bad passes. The passes were not necessary and a bit of patience would have seen another option open up.
Thomson’s attack end was fairly strong with the young GA dominating particularly with the shot. Shana started a little slow and didn’t seem to switch on and this gave the GA the confidence to keep shooting. She put up all 10 shots for the side shooting with 100% accuracy from a variety of places in the ring. Tori did an excellent job shutting down the GS starving her of ball and giving her only 1 shot, which she missed. Bron and Meg gave decent chase to the WA and C but just weren’t getting too many extra gains for us to score from.
Our teams defensive pressure was reasonable strong and Thomson threw away 5 balls giving us extra opportunities to take a lead but average shooting and good defensive pressure from their defender saw Sarah shooting 2 /5 and Tayla 9/12.
They had 2, 3 goal runs in the first quarter but on a positive we responded immediately with 2, 2 goal runs, one which was the last 2 goals to be scored for the quarter giving us a minor lead of 1 goal 11- 10.
We made a few changes with Erin taking the WD bib, Lillian taking the GD bib and Meg and Angie were given a warning to improve those passes. This change gave us an immediate 3 goal run. Angie and Meg kept the turn overs to 2 each, which is an improvement on the first quarter. Tayla and Sarah continued to find the space in the ring and apply the ‘turn and pass out’ that we have been practicing at training this week. Tayla shot 8 from 12 showing she was being supplied the ball and Sarah only put up the 1 shot this quarter, hopefully a result of her assisting.
Our full court defensive pressure through the whole court stepped up and they had 4 turnovers all coming from the GD, WD and WA. Erin and Lil were doing the body work to starve them of the ball and this forced the GS to come out of the ring and be contested by Tori. This pressure was a direct result of their inaccuracy and lack of ball. The GS put up more shots, 5 but was not very accurate only converting 3 and the GA was limited to 50% shooting 2 from4.
They had no runs at goals this quarter while we shot 3 – 2 – 2 – 1 and finished the quarter with another 2 goal run. This gave us a handy lead of 5 goals 20 -15.
Our confidence was building and all we needed to do was to keep our centers and we would win the game. Thomson made a few changes that worked for them because they were competitive this quarter beating us 10-9 although we did put up 1 more goal than them this quarter.
Our decision making in attack was starting to slip with Meg, Angie, Sarah and Tay all turning over the ball. This could be a result of the workload they were all putting out there or just a lapse in concentration. Tayla shot 7 /9, sticking to her average for the game and Sarah shot at 50% with 2 from 4. The GD seemed to messy with Sarah’s head for a couple of minutes but once Sarah settled so did the rest of the team.
Our defensive pressure was strong from our defensive end and they threw away 4 balls, all coming from their attack end. Meg stuck closer to her C stopping her from taking an easy run through the mid court and this meant Erin could give good chase and deflect a few balls.
We only had 3 goal run in the starting 2 minutes and they responded with a 2 goal run and then it was goal for goal until we broke them with 2, 2 goal runs. For the first time in the game, they scored the first goal of the quarter and the last. This is a key stat because this gave them the edge heading into the last because the score line was narrowed back to 29 -27.
For the last quarter I felt like we needed fresh legs. Erin came off and Sharna took the WD bib and Angie took to the bench and Bron went into WA. Both teams put up 11 shots but lucky for us we were just a little more accurate when it counted. Tay shot 5/8 and Sarah 2/3. Unfortunately all our turnovers came from our attackers again, with 2 from Meg, 2 from Bron and 2 from Sarah. This needs to be worked on as that is potentially a 6 goal turnover and could cost us games (like in the finals).
Our defenders did an outstanding job applying first ball pressure and making sure that when they missed Tori and Lil took the rebound and sent it safely down our attacking end. Their GS was kept to 3/5 shot while the dominant GA was shut down by Lil shooting at 50% 3/6. Sharna and Meg also found their way through the mess and got their hands to some balls that meant Thomson turned over the ball.
Fortunately for us we had 1, 3 goal run towards the end other the quarter because they had a 4 goal run that could have given them the win. We had chances for a run but made silly mistakes. This is how the scoring went in the last quarter: Them, us (we broke them twice but didn’t score), them, us, them, (we had another 2 goes but didn’t score), them, them (we had 2 chance but didn’t score), them, us, (another go but missed the shot), them, us, us, ( another chance to score but broke), us, them, ( we had another chance but stepped), us.
Thomson will be a competitive team this season and one which we have to be prepared for next time we meet them.

Unfortunately Ebony did not take the court in round 2, but was a great team player supporting from the bench.
