Well, after a long long season that started in the cold and dark back in July 2008 the final matches have been played. Congratulations to the A Turf side who turned around last seasons disappointment to end the season as Premiers. Commiserations to both the B Turf & A Matts side who went down but both fought well to the end. Both of these sides consist mainly of young players with a long and successful future ahead of them if they continue to work hard on their game.
LAST SATURDAY ON THE PARK –
A Turf – It’s all about Brad. Brad, Brad, Brad…back in the side after work commitments kept him out and he batted the entire innings to be not out at the end leaving the side with 205 runs. Early break throughs by Azza & Cocha had Moonee Valley on the back foot and except for a 7th wicket stand that sent a few shivers through the crowd the game was always in control. Philby took the critical 7th wicket (remember the note in the changerooms…. Be the difference), Nanners took an outstanding outfield catch in front of the opposition crowd, and Buddha finished it off with a couple of quick ones (did we hear the famous *&^* off from him??). The crowd erupted and it’s the fastest I’ve seen El Presidente move all year. Well done all!
B Turf – After last weeks poor day being rolled for 77 the seconds hopes rested on Saturday but Aberfeldie batted well to have a lead of over 150 on the first innings. This left the boys with an outside chance if they could rack up a very quick 250 and run through them in the last session. It was all a bit beyond them and they were bowled out for 109 but they gave it a shot. Next year and further years for this team.
A Matts met the might of Melton South at Grey Reserve. Melton South are an excellent side and certainly Turf material and they showed it on day one dismissing us for 119 in the 63rd over. Solid batting by most players who in general spent over 30 minutes out there but no one could really get on top of the tight bowling. Jordan Birch was the standout, top scoring with 31 despite being ill and retiring sick half way through his innings. Mark Wilson 21 & Matty Johnson 19no provided the next highest scores but no one could make the big one required. Mark Wilson took a hot caught & bowled on the last ball of the day to have Melton South 1/5 off six overs and we had a sniff. Along came Sunday and the sniff went quickly. Melton powered away to win the match without losing a wicket in just over 20 overs play for the day. Listening to all the awards that the boys from Melton collected for the year gave an indication of their hold over this division. However, they did lose the previous 2 grand finals so hopefully that will spur our boys on for next year.
