A bit of an update after the first third of the season and Round six was passed on the weekend with a game against Thomson one of last years Grand Finalists. We have seen a couple of close ones, some big wins, a defeat to Bannockburn last years Premiers and a very tough match against Thomson this week. With five wins under our belt in the seniors and a clean sweep of wins in the Reserves we are looking forward to the balance of the year.
To give you some insight after a year off we went into this game with 11 new faces out of the 22 players who ran out and probably a couple more who were out this week. The inclusions of Rhyce Prismall, Matty Wilkinson from Districts, Tyler Crennan, Jake Pettit returning Juniors, Paddy Daley, Dylan Harberger, Lachy Grant, Brad Neurath, Marc Yates from other clubs, Bryce Linehan-Cunningham former Colts player and back from studies and Jack Stephenson up from the Colts has given the club some real strength which is seen in the Reserves results to date. We even went into one week with over 15 players missing but were still able to fill both sides and have players left over and its been great to see these players remain at the club and still be part of whats to come. Hopefully they will be rewarded as the season progresses.
The seniors game was even at half time and went goal for goal for the balance of the day with the defense holding strong and the forwards making goals from nothing at times with just perseverance and ensuring the ball remains in the scoring zone. Paddy Daley in the ruck continues to improve and learn with the guidance of the senior players, Tyler Crennan displaying great skills and delivery, Jake Pettit and Dylan Harberger across the back line finding their feet in this competition, Dave Sablich after a full pre-season holding sway down back, Brendon Wilson back in great form leading our goalkicking and Bryce Linehan Cunningham finding his feet as a forward and the younger group continue to improve.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 14.8– 92 to Thomson 13.6 - 84
Goal Kickers:- B Wilson 4, B Linehan-Cunningham 4, D Boyd 3, Z De-Leon, L Grant, B Taylor & M Wilkinson 1 each.
Best Players:- D Sablich, T Crennan, B Carlton, B Taylor, J Pettit & D Boyd
The Reserves as we said continue to win their games and the strength now in this team is the pressure on everyone to retain their spot with so many other pushing for selection. With so many past senior players like Tito Nyawela, Jackson Smith, Reece Miles, David Brierty, Blake Quarrier in the team it has good players on every line and they are all pushing senior players for selection as well.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 8.9 - 57 to Thomson 4.4 – 28
Goal Kickers:- L Cachia 3, T Nyawela, J Wilson, J Smith, M Camilleri & D Insall 1 each.
Best Players:- C O’Malley. T Nyawela, L Cachia, D Brierty, L Miles & L Gibbs.
The Colts are in Div 3 as we are very young and inexperienced but we are giving them all a chance to play competitive football. This week we played Belmont which was the first Div 3 game after 3 qualifying games played in the prior weeks. This team will improve and when they get some experience will get a win and then we will see them improve as they gain confidence in themselves. The club has 3 Under 16 sides this year so the future looks good for this Division in the next few years and of course senior ranks as the biys come through.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 1.1 – 7 to Belmont 13.21 – 99
Goal Kickers:- J Dove.
Best Players:- C Dodd, D Pace, T Waters, B Rose, J Davis & D Thom.
