Mick O’Malley was the constant of Werribee Centrals as he was there at the clubs commencement in 1969 after the disbandment of the Werribee league when Werribee Centrals as Werribee Open Age was commenced to provide a footy club for the locals. He was now also so looking forward to our 50th Anniversary in 2019 already working and collating info for this series of events to celebrate. He was the consummate Centurion proud of our achievements, and passionate always about the clubs direction. He was the main instigator of the change in jumper colours and design to Green & Gold from the old Richmond colours so the club had its own identity as distinct from the VFA club, was a promoter of the move from the old WRFL to the GDFL in 1984 and most recently worked extremely hard to promote youth both within and back to the club to prepare for the Player Points system now in place hoping to bring the past players back with them.
Mick was a committee member over all this period being Secretary in 1986, 1988 and then again in later years 2015 to today. Was given a Life Membership in 1984 for his tireless work which also included, Team manager, Property Steward, Time Keeper, trainer and many other of those jobs we all need done. But it was the steadying influence and those words of wisdom both within and outside the committee room that we will remember him for the most, or perhaps it may also be that cheeky grin or comment that was always not far away if Mick was around. He loved his fishing and his weekly quaddy with the boys and he had many friends also at the Bowling Club and the Racecourse who will also be missing him as we are.
The O’Malleys have always been part of Centrals with Micks brothers, sons and now Grandsons playing in the Green & Gold. He was so proud when grandson Callum returned to his club to play so they were all together once again.
Please join us on Saturday July 29th at Galvin Park prior to the Senior game at 2 pm as we celebrate Micks achievements both at the club and in his community.
