After a three solid wins Centrals were looking for four in a row against Winchelsea something they have not been able to do in 2015 let alone in the past couple of years and put them a little closer to the final five sides. A very even start with both sides not taking advantage of their chances when they went forward. Centrals in the first half of the quarter and Winchelsea in the latter part of it as Centrals allowed them to gain some momentum.
From the start of the second quarter to the end of the game really Centrals dominated the ball but could not put a big score on the board. Centrals when they came into the forward half had the players to take marks in Jason Butty Luke Cachia and Tyron Montebruno and kick the goals but persisted in trying to play this short crisscross game that really was not taking advantage of superiority around the ground and up forward and were creating unnecessary turnovers and spillages.
An unfortunate injury to Shane Weatherly in a marking pack did not help but it mean’t the back half had to run more to cover the loss of a tall and this seemed to straighten the side up and they were able to run out good winners in the end. An exciting moment during the game was the great run and goal from the first gamer in Jared Fletcher and looking at his game we will see him again at this level. Next week against a final five side in Bannockburn Centrals will need to be much more concise with the ball and another win is not out of the question.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 15.10 - 100 to Winchelsea 7.11 - 53
Goal Kickers:- T Montebruno 6, J Butty 4, L Cachia, A Ostrowski, P Jones, J Fletcher & S Confait 1 each.
Best Players:- P Jones, L Salmond, C Koutzamanis, A Ostrowski, T Montebruno & D Todaro.
The Reserves had a slow start as they found it hard to find any cohesion at all and when they did points were the result. As the game wore on Centrals found space and were able to run the ball a lot better than Winchelsea with Matt DeLuca and Jack Cailes getting a lot of the ball around the centre of the ground and entries into the forward half. One of the U 18s in Daniel Skinner had a great game in his first in senior levels. It was always going to be an emotional match with Craig Hardingham choosing to retire from the game against his old club in Winchelsea and in front of his team mates and friends. So a fitting win for a big man of the game and in the GDFL.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 12.15 – 87 to Winchelsea 5.6 – 36
Goal Kickers:- M DeLuca 3, J Cailes 3, D Skinner 2, M Patterson, B May, C Novinec & J Harvey 1 each.
Best Players:- M Patterson, N Byrne, J Cailes, D Skinner, J Despott, J Harvey & of course C Hardingham.
