Centrals back after the bye due to Country Week Championships was at home to North Geelong one of the favourites this year for the finals. After a very disappointing display against Bannockburn and with a just about a full list to pick from was hoping for a competitive match. Centrals kicking with the use of a breeze started well against a firm favourite for the game and were able to maintain contact and were only a goal down at quarter time. North started well in the second and it looked as to how far but Centrals battled hard especially in the back half with Shane Weatherley, Corey Grusling, Chris Koutzamanis and Adam Bell defending well and breaking up many forward pushes. When Weatherley went off with the blood rule North gained a break and kicking 7 to 2 goals for the quarter had a handy lead.
After the break it would be a do or die effort and with a lot more run Centrals were able to outscore North for the quarter and get back in the game but would need to lift even further in the last if they were to inch any closer. With Phil Jones dominating on one wing, Daniel Boyd starting to get the ball and Jason Butty now across half back Centrals seemed to have more avenues forward and even though falling short played far better this week.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 11.5 - 71 to North Geelong 16.17 - 114
Goal Kickers:- D Boyd 3, K Butty 2, D Osborne 2, J Butty, N Byrne, T Montebruno & L Speziale 1.
Best Players:- P Jones, D Boyd, L Salmond, S Weatherley, M Taylor & C Koutzamanis.
The Reserves continued their improvement against ladder leaders North Geelong and there was nothing in it for most of the game. Again better disposal and less turnovers the game could quite easily have gone the other way. Luke Cachia up forward was a focal point even in the very windy conditions and gave Centrals a real target and with the likes of Callan Novinec, Nathan Beasley, Scot Rathbone and Matt De Luca who were getting plenty of the ball around the ground Centrals pushed North to the end.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 6.2 – 38 to North Geelong 7.8 – 50
Goal Kickers:- L Cachia 4, & C Novenic 2.
Best Players:- C Novinec, M Attard, N Beasley, L Cachia, M DeLuca & S Rathbone.
The Colts faced off against Queenscliff in the early game and with the wind playing tricks, both sides found it hard to find targets and score easily. As the game wore on Centrals were the superior side and came away comfortable winners and will be looking forward to next weeks game.
Centrals are again at Galvin Park next weekend against Thomson who are pushing the top sides for a finals berth. Should be a great game and winnable on home turf. Centrals still need players so anyone wanting to play footy with a friendly club in a good competition please come down to training on Tues/Thurs at Galvin Park you will be made most welcome.
