Centrals were again at Galvin Park in another Match of the Day in the GDFL against the fast and young Inverleigh side who the week before beat the fancied North Geelong outfit. Centrals were without Jace Butty and this would leave a hole in the forward line as Tyrone Montabruno is also out injured. This meant Luke Phipps and David Hall filled in up forward and Centrals with Hall running wide quickly had three goals on the board and looked the faster side.
Inverleigh though quickly got back into the game in the second quarter winning the centre and making Centrals backline work hard to stop them being further in front at half time. Costly turnovers were not helping Centrals cause.
Ben Fletcher and Phil Jones were put forward in a hope to kick some goals and they both responded especially Phil Jones who took some telling marks both on the goal line and across half forward. But again Inverleigh responded with goals of their own to take a slender lead into the last break.
Centrals would need to lift as they did against East Geelong last week if they were to pull this one off and maintain their position in the top five. It was not to be as Inverleigh seemed to have Centrals for speed and men around the ball and kicked five last quarter goals against Centrals 3 to run out winners. Centrals had good contributors in the last with Michael Cassidy, David Hall and Ben Fletcher but it was not enough.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 11.9 – 75 to Inverleigh 13.22 - 100
Goal Kickers:- P Jones 3, D Boyd 3, B Fletcher 3, M Cassidy & D Hall 1 each.
Best Players:- M Cassidy, P Jones, D Hall, L Salmond, D Boyd & B McNicol.
The Reserves also playing Inverleigh in what was Peter Greys 200th game with the club. Congratulations Pete a great achievement as he has also played at Werribee and Geelong West during this time. Centrals started slowly against a taller opposition and were being out played around the ground but after the quarter time break Centrals started to put some pressure on and run to space as Luke Cachia both across half forward and up the ground took some strong marks and brought others into the game. The momentum grew from there with Ryan Quarrier, Matt Walson and Nathan Beasley starting to get on top and become prominent as well. Centrals were able to maintain this for the balance of the game to run out good winners against a side even with them on the ladder. It was good to see the likes of Tom Anderson and Brayden May make solid contributions as they learn from each game.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 11.14 – 80 to Inverleigh 7.9 – 51
Goal Kickers:- L Cachia 3, A McDonald 3, N Beasley 2, R Quarrier, C Wilson & B May 1 each.
Best Players:- L Cachia, N Beasley, M Walson, D Todaro, A McDonald & R Quarrier.
Centrals are away to Corio this week in another tough game and hopefully a few people will make the trip to watch what should be a entertaining game as well.
