After a very tough match against Bannockburn last week due to the numbers missing from the side for varying reasons Centrals in front of a very large and vocal crowd for Past Players Day and the clubs 30th Anniversary in the GDFL would have everyone available and no excuses. This game would be a make or break one for both sides who both want to be in the finals and are sitting around the mark at the halfway game of the season.
East broke the game wide open in the first 5 minutes with three goals before Centrals got going and the move of Steve Morgan into the ruck seemed to lift the Centrals centre and running players as they fought back into the game. As the quarter wore on East gained the ascendancy and again in the second were the better side as they read the play and ran to space to create opportunities and went into half time with a five goal advantage.
The crowd knew Centrals needed to start well or the game could have been over and this they did with strong goals from Michael Cassidy and Daniel Boyd and then the rain came and it was a goal for goal game and it seemed to take the pace out of both sides.
Centrals knew the East lead was not insurmountable but as the rain got heavier it looked like the task may have been beyond the side especially when East kicked a goal against the tide. As it got wetter and heavier Centrals seemed to have Easts measure and just pushed the ball forward at every opportunity and the back half were able to ensure East did not score again. As the game got closer the crowd became more vocal and this seemed to lift the home side to kick 5 goals to 1 for the quarter and to what was a great win and set up the crowd for the evenings festivities.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 13.13 – 91 to East Geelong 12.11 - 83
Goal Kickers:- P Jones 2, B Montabruno 2, M Taylor 2, D Boyd 2, J Butty,M Cassidy, L Phipps, D Hall & C Koutzamanis 1 each.
Best Players:- M Cassidy, B Montabruno, L Salmond, D Hall, M Smith & P Jones.
The Reserves also playing East Geelong also a little above them on the ladder needed this win as well. With a few players back from the seniors this would be as good a chance as any to win against a side above them on the ladder. It was those players in Luke Cachia, Nick Byrne, Callan Novinec and Ryan Quarrier who were giving Centrals plenty of the ball but bad kicking was letting the side down. This mean’t there was only a goal in it at three quarter time.
In a low scoring game Centrals persisted in the last and run out winners by 12 points.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 7.15 – 57 to East Geelong 6.9 – 45
Goal Kickers:- M DeLuca 2, L Cachia, N Lovell, D Todaro & B May 1 each.
Best Players:- N Beasley, N Byrne, L Cachia, B Doyle, K Blade & R Quarrier.
We must thank everyone who contributed to the great day for our Anniversary and for all the Past Players who came back and who stuck around You all made the day and evening what it was. Centrals are home to Inverleigh this week in another tough game and hopefully a few of the people who enjoyed the day so much this weekend will return.
