Centrals Reserves were out to get some respect back after a disaster last week against North Geelong in the second semi. Having to play Bell Post Hill though would be a challenge as it has been all year with their bigger bodies and older players. Centrals went in with only one change young Reese Richardson up from the U 18s so there would be no excuses.
Centrals started well with Tom Colliver marking early and putting Centrals first goal on the board. Centrals were winning the centre through Peter Grey and Luke Cachia but finding Bell Post Hill were tackling better and were out marking them especially across half back and half forward which was making it dangerous for Centrals last line of defense. In the second and third terms Centrals were allowing Bell Post to dictate play and seemed prepared to allow their opponents first use of the ball which mean’t Bell Post was dominating the game but just could not kick the score needed to keep Centrals at bay. With 11 points separating the teams at the last change it was any-ones game even though Bell Post were coming home with the wind which had kicked up. Centrals knew they had to kick the first goal and after a battle of the backlines as neither side gave anything away they got the reward. Now with only less than a goal to go Centrals seemed to lift and kicked the next as well as the younger players with faster leg speed stretched Bell Post around the flanks. It was now Bell Posts turn to go forward but they could only kick points and squared the score with a few minutes to go. It was going to be the next score wins and everyone knew it. Centrals were able to run the ball the entire length of the ground to see John Drohomerecki mark and line up for any score. A poor kick again fell short to fall into Peter Greys hands in front of the pack and the siren went. Only needing a point to win and straight in front a goal was scored and Centrals progressed to their Grand Final next week.
It was hard to find good players for three quarters but the determination that came out in the last got Centrals over the line. The playing group now need to commit to training this week and just see what eventuates with this extra effort.
