Werribee Centrals netballers travelled to Thomson in Geelong for the second round of Geelong District Netball expecting nothing less than very tough games and this they got even though some of the scores may not have reflected this.
A Grade
W Centrals 65 – Thomson 30
Werribee Centrals came today with specific goals from their new coach, who was unable to make todays game. Controlling the game early on against a tough Thomson. Werribee Centrals focused on playing for four quarters consistently. Defensive pressure in the ring was strong from Amanda Wilson and Noni MCClure & later Emma Richards working hard to hold Thomsons goal shooter to minimal scoring. Mid Court worked hard on their defensive press, with the goalers capitalizing on every opportunity. The new combination of Mickayla Ward and Ashlee Shacklock combining well together in the attacking quarter. Werribee Centrals continue to treat each game with importance with new challenges and bringing in new team members.
Best: Ashlee Shacklock, Noni McClure, Amy Giani
Goals: Ashelee Shacklock 39, Mickayla Ward 26
B Grade
W Centrals – 34 – Thomson 17
Another slow start for B grade which made it a tough task for them to work themselves back into the game. With some key positional changes at quarter time and the defense stepping it up they were able to claw their way back into the match.
With an improved combination in the ring and goalers finding their range Centrals were able to take the lead.
With great defensive pressure by Anna Pattison down the court Centrals were able to convert their turnovers. Leigh Stewart proved to be too strong for Thomson’s goalers with a great game in GK.
Centrals walk away with the 4 points and plenty to work on for next week. B grade will train hard and hopefully improve their starting record.
Goals: Ellie Tubbs 16, Renee DiGioacchino 13, Amanda Neilsen 5
Best: Anna Pattison, Leigh Stewart, Ellie Tubbs
C GRADE
CENTRALS – 35 THOMSON – 32
Werribee Centrals were challenged in all areas of their game today. Attack had to work very hard to create goaling opportunities for themselves. Madison Hayes showed promise at WA providing strong drives down the court especially in the 3rd quarter. Jade Tewiss was brilliant in defense forcing Thomson to rotate their goaling combinations. Although Werribee Centrals struggled with their passing today the girls encouraged each other and came away with a 3 goal win.
Goals: Clarrissa Melilli 24, Amber Smith 11
Best: Jade Terriss, Madison Hayes, Tayla Melilli
D Grade
W Centrals 43 – Thomson 24
Werribee Centrals backed up their win from last week playing an outstanding four quarters of netball. Centrals were hungry from the beginning with Diandra Sellers and Chanelle Percora picking off intercepts across the court to turn over the ball. Rachael Cunningham worked well in the centre court, creating space and executing perfect passes into both goalers. Standing strong and tall in the ring was Clare Atherton working well with Holly Ellul who barely missed their shots. Overall Werribee Centrals played a consistent four quarters of netball and came out with a comfortable win over Thomson.
Goals: Clare Atherton 19, Holly Ellul 17, Bonnie Bertone 7
Best: Diandra Sellers, Chanelle Percora, Rachael Cunningham.
This week Centrals are again in Geelong against Belmont who are the big improvers.
