When you get a phone call at 8.00am saying your ground is underwater and organize pumps you know you are in a little trouble as the Reserves need to win to stay in the finals. With no help from your local council the club staff did a great job to get the ground playable for the Reserves and Seniors but the Colts missed out as this game was abandoned due to the conditions.
As you would think the games were played in very ordinary conditions and having to play an undermanned opposition in Winchelsea the game was never going to be pretty. Centrals are slowly getting back to full strength and welcomed back Chris Koutzamanis and Nathan Lovell who were both influential during the game and allowed Centrals to be strong around the packs and in the centre of the ground even with the muddy conditions. With Craig Rosenzweig back as well up forward Centrals forward half were very strong and attacked the ball well with Phil Jones especially prominent.
Finals next week on the Sunday and it will be East Geelong who Centrals have not beaten this year on the big St Albans ground in Geelong. Not an impossible task but Centrals will need to play as they have been doing over the last four weeks.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 29.16 – 190 to Winchelsea 1.2 - 8
Goal Kickers:- C Rosenzweig 6 P Jones 5, T Montabruno 4, C Koutzamanis 3, R Murphy 3, T Bray 2, M Patterson 2, J Bailey-Buckler 2, B Montabruno & M Knight 1 each.
Best Players:- P Jones, C Koutzamanis, B Montabruno, T Montabruno, C Rosenzweig & N Lovell.
Centrals Reserves in a must win match against Winchelsea and the bigger the better for percentage never took control of the game and shook it. With half the ground underwater Centrals persisted in playing that side and still even more puzzling persisted in trying to play dry weather football which resulted in a much more even game that it should have been. With finals next week the Reserves will need to play much better and also take the best options for the conditions.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 9.10 – 64 to Winchelsea 2.1 – 13
Goal Kickers:- C Wislon 3, D Todaro 2, R Giarrusso J Richmond, P Grey & A McDonald 1 each.
Best Players:- P Grey, A McDonald, C Wilson, R Quarrier, S Rathbone, A Zammitt & J Richmond.
This week Centrals are in the elimination finals in the GDFL for both reserves and seniors on Sunday 26th August at St Albans Reserve in Geelong. Both sides have the ability to beat their oppositions in East Geelong and Bell Post Hill but will need to be at their very best for 100 minutes.
