Werribee Centrals were at home at Galvin Park to play Corio in Round 4 of the GDFL. After a solid if not over impressive win again Inverleigh last week Centrals were keen to gain a further four points to keep in touch with the ladder leaders after losing the first two games. Injuries continue to deplete Centrals but you can only play with those you have fit and it enables some of the younger players to come up into the seniors.
It was a good start with both sides hard at the ball especially in the centre which gave the side who broke away from the centre opportunities up forward and Centrals capitalized on these kicking four goals in the first quarter against the breeze. Both Tyron Montebruno and Craig Rosenzweig made use of their opportunities and gave Centrals a real focal point up forward. Brayden Montebruno certainly was the difference in the two sides as his direct run at the ball was a delight to watch.
In the second quarter Centrals lapsed back into a lazy football side allowing Corio to run forward of the ball and dictate play and if it was not for Centrals backline they may have been well in the game or even in front. Players such as Shane Weatherley back in the seniors, Brayden Smith and Shaun McGuiness all played their part in standing tall and defending well. The coaches were not happy and made it know over the break and Centrals responded but really neither side could break free of the other to get leading score. Blake Pilkington was doing good work across half forward but again it was being left to two few.
The last quarter was different with Centrals taking control and even though still not running hard enough were able to break the tiring Corio side and run away easy winners kicking nine goals straight in the last quarter with Rosenzweig and Montabruno.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 19.19 – 127 to Corio 8.16 - 64
Goal Kickers:- C Rosenzweig 5, T Montebruno 5, B Pilkington 2, N Lovell 2, C Brierty, B Montebruno, B Chugg & P Jones 1 each.

The Reserves yet to win a game wanted this one bad and started as if that’s what they intended to do with authority, running, talking and doing all the things they had not been doing in the last three games. Josh Richmond was marking everything that came his way and then doing the running showing his teammates what is needed to win games and the younger players did the same. After a solid first quarter Centrals built on the lead each quarter to run out solid winners.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 16.9 – 99 to Corio 9.6 – 60
Goal Kickers:- D Giarrusso 3, J Richmond 3, M Deluca 2, C Wilson 2, R Murphy 2, M Keartland, S Rathbone & B Saunders 1 each.
Best Players:- J Richmond, C Wilson, B Saunders, B Foster, L Speziale & R Murphy.
Centrals U 18s in the Geelong Colts competition came up against Bannockburn who were undefeated and were not able to match it with the country boys who played good direct football and ran out good winners. This was the boy’s last grading game and next week they start their season proper and the club will know what grade and who they will play next week on Tuesday.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 4.9 – 33 to Bannockburn 10.10 – 70
