Werribee Centrals were back at Galvin Park on Saturday to play Winchelsea who had turned their season around with three wins on the trot against competitive sides so this would be no pushover either and Centrals would need to aware of what the opposition could do especially without Shaun Simmons the lynch pin of the Centrals defence which is their asset. On the positive Centrals regained Simon Calbert and Blake Pilkington who would add some run across the centre and half forward lines. Centrals started with the breeze and knew they had to start well and they did with Calbert and Brendan Chugg being instrumental in the first two goals. The intensity of the whole side was excellent to such an extent twice the forced the ball from half back to the gaols without really putting boot to the footy which resulted in another two goals. Centrals were in all out attack mode with runners on every line and Winchelsea had no answer as they peppered the goal front and were nine goals up by the end of the quarter and Winch had not registered a score. It was a great quarter of footy by the home side.
Winchelsea now had the wind and they quickly had a score on the board but Centrals always seemed to have their measure with the big forwards of Centrals in Nathan Lovell and Craig Rosenzweig pulling in the big marks when needed as both sides traded goals. Two goals to Winch in the last few minutes did not make the coach happy at half time.
Could Centrals repeat the first quarter and when Lovell kicked truly within a few minutes it looked that way but Winch regrouped and started to win the ball out of the centre and it their turn to run in numbers and leave Centrals wondering how to combat their pace. Lucky their kicking let them down and Centrals defence held strong or the scores could have been much closer going into the last.
Winch continued where they left off kicking the first two goals of the quarter as it looked as though Centrals had stopped running and were not prepared to make the effort to man up either. A 100 metre penalty to Matt Deluca resulted in a goal and everyone hoped this might kick start Centrals but Winch was straight back with a goal but eventually time ran out with Centrals winning but not convincing.
Scores: Werribee Centrals 18.14 - 122 to Winchelsea 12.10 - 82
Goals: C Rosenzweig 7, N Lovell 4, M DeLuca, R Quarrier, C Kelly, V Leung & S Calbert 1 each.
Best players: S Calbert, D Galle, N Lovell, C Rosenzweig, B Smith, V Leung & C Hardingham.
The Reserves are in a situation they must win every game now to have any hope of making the finals after a very disappointing start to the season. The way Winchelsea started the game it did not look good but Centrals slowly worked their way into the game especially as Peter Grey started to dominate in the centre and around the ground giving the runners first use of the ball. Centrals then became stronger at the ball and commenced running the ball at will into their forward line. Winchelsea had no answer to this positive football and Centrals were able to outscore Winch in every quarter. With the U 18s not playing this week young Luke Cachia played and was a foacl point up forward for the side.
Scores: Werribee Centrals: 17.13 - 115 to Winchelsea 3.3 - 21
Goals: D Giarusso 4, A DeCampli 3, L Cachia 3, J Bailey-Buckler 2, N Sexton, P Grey, L Speziale, A McLeod & L Simpson 1 each.
Best players: P Grey, J Bailey-Buckler, J Pace, A DeCampli, B Saunders, A McLeod & D Giarruso.
This week Centrals are at Bannockburn in what will be very hotly contested as both sides need to win to maintain their finals aspirations. Bannockburn will be looking for revenge after not showing too much in the last meeting at Galvin Park in the first round of matches.
