This week we welcome our friends from Winchelsea and look forward to hard, aggressive, disciplined and exciting games of football and netball. Although not likely to make football finals Winchelsea are in a position to shape the final five and let us make sure we are not one of the scalps they take. Our ‘A’ Grade netballers need to put in their best game to beat ladder leaders Winchelsea as do all our netball teams if they want to record a win.
Werribee Centrals ventured to Foot Rot Flats Anakie in what was expected to be very hotly contested games of football as both sides needed to win to maintain their finals aspirations. Anakie after beating Centrals early in the season were not going to be easy but Centrals intended to return the favour and inflict a defeat on home turf. The importance of the game was reflected in Match of the day honours.
The Anakie ground looked in splendid condition but a swirling wind was not going to make it easy for either side. The game was scrappy and bodies thrown into battle with gay abandonment. The wind did favour the Geelong end to which Anakie was kicking in the first quarter. Centrals had most of the play in each quarter and were eventually able to muster a win. Anakie did show that they have a strong commitment to each other and if results go their way will be sure to make finals.
Scores: Werribee Centrals 10.16.76 to Anakie 8.9.57
Goals: C Rosenzweig 3, N. Lovell 3, D Leatch, T. Bray, D Galle, & M. Deluca 1 each.
Best players: D. Galle, D. Ellis, N. Lovell, T Bray, B Chugg, & S. Simmons.
Centrals Reserves had to beat the only undefeated side in all three football competitions and at their home ground was not going to be easy. The game was not one of skills but an arm wrestle for start to finish. Anakie were able to keep their unbeaten run alive.
Scores: Werribee Centrals: 5.5 - 35 lost to Anakie 8.9 - 57
Goals: D. Giarrusso 3, A. Briggs & P. Grey 1 each.
Best players: N Beasley, L. O’Malley, D. Cooper, & A. Briggs.
Our netball teams were all too strong for Anakie who are in the stages of rebuilding and doing well to field sides in all competitions.
