Corio Football Club
First Annual Report 1974
Dear Members,
It is with great pleasure that I (Roger Gray), on behalf of the Committee, present the first annual report of the Corio Football Club.
Formation Committee: On the 11th October, 1973, (4 days short of twelve months ago) at a meeting attended by Lance Collins, Jack Reid, M. Beech, Mr & Mrs J Brilley, A. Jones, Mike Allen, and Roger Gray, with an apology from Andy Cowley, a resolution was taken “that a working committee be formed with a view to forming the Corio Village Football Club”.
This working committee worked unrelentingly in achieving many things. Firstly it approached the Shire of Corio for a ground. This was met with a cool reception by Council and the formation committee considered such grounds as Chanel, Geelong Grammar School, Corio Technical School, Evans Reserve, and Shell Oval. Publicity was heavily used to advantage and not until almost four months later did the Shire allocate Shell Oval to the Corio Football Club.
This formation committee also applied to the Geelong & District Football League for affiliation which after lobbying all other clubs in the league and by an emotional speech by myself of soccer versus football, amongst other things, affiliation in the Woolworth Division was granted.
An application was made through the Geelong Football Club to the V.F.L for a grant to our newly established club. Corio Football Club has been the only club under the Geelong Football Club jurisdiction to make such an application. The Geelong Football Club were surprised to learn that such a grant was even available. $100 was received only last week and too late for inclusion in our financial report for the year.
Kevin Eastern an ex administrator of Geelong Football Club was approached to advise our formation committee on the do’s and don’ts of football administration. To Kevin we are most grateful. From Kevin we learnt a lot.
Interviews of coaches took place in November in which the following coaches were appointed. Rolf Messinger (Senior), John Patterson (Assistant Senior), Laurie Ansett (Under 16), Michael Allen (Under 13 Red), and Bill Cumberland (Under 13 White). On the 18th March, 1974, John Patterson resigned due to personal reasons and Don Mckenzie was appointed in lieu. For personal reasons Bill Cumberland followed by Alan Harrison resigned from which Brian Smith saw the season through for the under 13 White team. To these people our sincere and genuine thanks are extended.
The formation Committee wrote on the 9th November, 1973, approximately 180 letters to industry requesting financial support. As indicated in the letter donations over $10.00 would be acknowledged by the club in its annual report and are set out below.
Geelong West Football Club $50
T. Costa & Co $15
Winter & Taylor P\L $30
Ocean Child Hotel $15
Robt. Purnell P\L $25
Trans Otway P\L $10
Heath’s Motors P\L $20
J Chisholm P\L $10
Shell Co of Aust Ltd $20
Jarman Bros P\L $10
Paddy Hoare P\L $20
J Anderson & Co $10
Pilkington A.C.I $20
Miller & Lee (Chemist) $10
Myers (Geelong) Ltd $20
A.M Haines & Co $10
Total of $295
To receive such assistance demonstrates the confidence industry had in Corio Football Club. Our thanks and appreciation is acknowledged including those that donated less than $10.
Fundraising Function: On the 10th December, 1973, a most adventurous Christmas Sportsman’s Dinner was held, chaired by Mr Neil Trezise M.L.A and special guest the President of the Shire of Corio, Mr J Deppler. The panel consisted of Polly Farmer, Don Jolly, Ian Redpath, Peter Bakos, Pat Lalor, and Judy Naryati. Financially, and entertainment wise, the evening was a success but being a day 101 Degrees F the numbers attending were disappointing. Further, two letters were printed and distributed to over 2,000 households north of Cox Rd and St Georges Rd’s. The first advised of the clubs formation and the second of a public meeting to formally form the Corio Football Club. This meeting was held in Hendy Street Hall on the 10th February, 1974.
Committee: As a result of this public meeting the Corio Football Club became a reality and Committee members elected thus terminating the Formation Committee. Subsequently to this the Committee was expanded on the 8th March, 1974, to include Ian Hansen, Brian Smith, Dave Russell, R Patterson, and on the 6th May 1974, J Andrews and on 16th June 1974, R Mc Keirnan. From 11th October, 1973, to our last meeting of the year on 23rd September, 1974, a total of 27 Committee Meetings have been held. Set out below are the names, responsibilities, and number of committee meetings attended (required under the constitution to be stated) by each committee member:
Roger Gray President 24\27 Lance Lance Collins Secretary 23\27
Dave Russell Assist Secret 15\19

Also Peter Foster, R Cook, and R Allen were admitted to the Committee but for one reason or another, shortly thereafter resigned. The year has not been easy with many trials and tribulations all due to the tremendous work load necessary in establishing a new club. To these committee men my thanks are extended. I now turn to the game of football.
Seniors and Reserves: Training under Rolf Messinger commenced on the 12th February 1974, our first game against Anakie being the 20th April 1974. Road work, the sand dunes of Point Roadknight, Trezises Gym and Corio Squash Courts saw the boys gain fitness. Footballs and groundwork followed. Five practice matches then took place against Werribee Centrals, Portarlington, Laverton, Leopold and Torquay. During this pre-season training our coach was very pleased and confident for the season. Two player pre-season social nights were held in order players got to know one another. The Club then announced an incentive scheme to Senior players which as the year progressed was changed and awarded to the 5 best players each game.
The season started and finished without a senior win, although 3 or 4 were very close and could or should have been won. The Reserves won one game being that of East Belmont. In home and away games the first goal was kicked by Don McKenzie who became our top goal kicker for the year. The first injury was Brian Smith with a back injury in the first practice match against Werribee Centrals. The first hospital injury was R Allen with 8 stitches in the forehead in the 4th practice match against Leopold. The first report was by gorgeous George Hutchison.
Of interest there were 129 players signed by the club during the year. Many fell by the wayside and more will come next year. Stability of the sides came the year ended and the club is set, with a few more experienced and talented players, for a good year in 1975.
Under 16’s : These boys had a very successful year being runners up for the year behind three time premiers, Belmont. Training under Laurie Ansett commenced 25th February, 1974, having their first win in their first practice game against Portarlington. Some 12 boys from Werribee helped bolster the side and travelled down each week. Our thanks are extended to Mr Rizzoli and Mr Plumeridge for their dedication to these boys and the club. An honour for the club came when invitations to the Geelong Training Clinic of Lineham, Koorn, Thomas, and Warren were made. In making the grand final congratulations to Laurie Ansett and Manager Ian Hansen for their efforts have given the club a great reputation.
Under13’s: An under 13 Red and under 13 White sides were fielded in the inter club competition of the league. The Reds were brought to the premiership by Michael Allen and the Whites being the younger in both age and experience, came close to winning one game. The White were plagued with coaching problems, finally being coached regularly by Brian Smith who receives our appreciation.
The Reds from their first practice match, and convincing win over Portarlington, were set for a good year. The Grand Final was exciting and fought out to the bell defeating Bell Park. Our thanks must go to P. Foster for his umpiring of home games for the year and to Mr Crowley for his specialist training of these boys.
Publicity: The clubs external publicity was by means of our radio show Friday nights on 3GL, through general press releases and Football Notes. Internal publicity was through the “Devils Diary”. Richard Patterson our Publicity Officer presented 26 3GL shows from the 29th March to 20th September, interviewing club officials, coaches and players and other club’s personnel. These shows were presented very professionally, including those shows where Lance Collins and Mike Allen stood in.
To Heaths Motors, Corio Village, and the Sundowner Hotel as sponsors, we say “thank-you” and look forward to continued support in 1975. In the press 15 leading articles were written, including many photographs about the club. 33 inserts in Football Notes were entered and 19 issues of the “Devil’s Diary” prepared. Publicity iiiin my belief is a very important part of the club and with a total of 93 shows and articles presented, we will appreciate the work involved and therefore extend many thanks to Richard Patterson.
Social: On the 20th March, 1974, a Social Committee was formed. During the year these ladies ran 3 cabarets on 16/3/74, 24/5/74, and 13/7/74, together with last Saturday’s Presentation night. Working out of tents initially, these ladies provided the canteen facilities so necessary around the ground. Pie nights, steak nights, raffles are but some of the things these ladies became involved in. Their efforts have been dedicated, hard working, tolerant with families and to them and their tolerant husbands, their work is sincerely appreciated.
Financial: Through our treasurer Jack Reid, we have remained financial and paid all commitments. The weekly effort, although hard to administer paid handsome dividends. The club, however, has created a building fund for the express purpose of providing social and club rooms. This currently runs at a substantial overdraft and full and proper use of the same is necessary to finally pay for these rooms. A color TV raffle is currently being run to offset the overdraft. Your support is requested and urgently needed. Thanks goes to Jack Reid for his truly dedicated efforts.
Many donations towards the Corio Football Club Building Fund were received from many people. These are gratefully acknowledged hereunder.
R Allum $4, Andy Cowley $10, Cam Dawson P\L $25, Fred Flanagan (petrol for raffle) $50, Roger Grey (chairs for social rooms ($280), Paddy Hoare P\L $25, Jack Reid $10, Brian Smith $5, Ian Hansen $10, Dale Jennings $10, Harry Matzak $10, J Montesalvo (bars for social rooms, $40, L Parker $25, F Platek $10, L Purcell $1, R Renfrey P\L $10
Cricket Club: Recently a Formation Committee was formed to established a Cricket Club. Monies have been loaned this section of the club by the committee in order to purchase initial supplies for both its senior and under 16 sections. Richard Patterson and Michael Allen the respective coaches of the Seniors and Under 16’s saw rain postpone their game in the Austin Shield. To the Committee, coaches and players of the Cricket Club our best wishes for the season are with you.
Maintenance: We often take for granted the fact that our rooms are clean at all times, that the ground is lined, that our footballs, guernseys, track suits are clean. Long hours and hard work by Brian Smith, Ian Hansen, and Andy Cowley is much appreciated and to them thank you.
Trip Committee: Very late in the year a Trip Committee was formed to raise funds for the players end of year trips. After the trip was organised the necessary numbers fell short of the 20 to fill a bus. The finance necessary to pay for the bus alone was insufficient due to the numbers preferring to see such funds applied to the club generally in its expensive years of development. The trip was therefore cancelled and in its stead a pleasant Sunday morning organized for the 13th of October for the benefit of players. Funds raised to date will be carried forward to the 1975 season. To thew realistic club spirited players your actions are heartened and to the members of the Trip Committee, once again our thanks are extended.
1975 Season: In looking to the next season many things need to be considered, some of which are stated below. The outgoing Committee is currently considering some and I recommend to the incoming committee.
(A) A players insurance scheme be implemented
(B) An annual club liquor licence be obtained
(C) Showers, Public Toilets, Timekeepers, box and general ground facilities be improved
(D) Sole use of the Shell Oval and eventually a new ground be pursued
(E) Relations with Shell Club be fostered particularly parking, showers and electricity
(F) A supporters club be established
(G) Strong recruiting continue in 1975
(H) Expansion of social rooms including a change room with hot showers
(I) Compulsory membership fees be increased
(J) The 3GL show be extended in time and time slot for 1975
(K) The principle at Committee level of one man one job be sought after more than the past year
(L) That more people become involved in running the club, particularly managers, trainers, and social representatives.
(M) That the incoming committee is dedicated as “ Sound Administration builds a successful club”. That in incoming committee is prepared to face problems squarely, honestly and with hard work and as a team tackle them with success.
Closing Comments:
The year has come and gone as a great success. Five sides fielded, a Premiership, a runner-up, financially sound, improving facilities, strong player support and a hard working Committee to name but a few.
To the entire Committee I say thank you for your support . To the members of sub-committees I say thank you for your efforts and results. To the players, other members and parents your support has been in the club spirit I am proud of.
And lastly, but not at least, to my wife for the backing and moral support so necessary when dedicated to a cause.
Members I present to you the 1st annual report of the Corio Fooball Club and welcome any questions thereon.
Thank-you
R,J Gray
