NEWTOWN and Chilwell has landed the signature of experienced midfielder Micah Buchanan.
The former Colac and Geelong Amateur premiership star will join the club in a playing capacity for 2017 after reaching an agreement with the club just prior to Christmas.
Eagles coach Damien McMahon said the recruitment of Buchanan was significant, with the 32-year-old set to play a mentoring role to the club’s younger midfield brigade.
“We’re really excited about having another experienced midfielder join our club. It was a bit of a late recruit but it’s excellent and he’ll be very handy for us,” McMahon said.
“We’ve obviously got a really young side at the moment, particularly our midfield, and we just thought if we could add another mature age player to help develop some of our youngsters that would be great.
“He’s been around a long time and played a lot of footy and is very experienced. Obviously he’s coming towards the end of his career but he was keen to get back to play GFL footy and play the highest level he could.”
Newtown is also in discussions with a group of West Australian players about the prospect of them joining the club this year.
McMahon, who coached WAFL club Perth for four-and-a-half seasons and spent the past two years at Claremont as high performance coach, said the Eagles were edging closer to finalising their list.
The former Newtown utility has been living in Western Australia and will take training for the first time in his new role when the club returns to training next Monday.
“Kaine Marsh and Matt Bruhn have taken charge and been really good, it’s far from ideal but that was just the scenario we were in,” he said.
“It has obviously been a bit difficult not living in Geelong but Terry Bright (football manager) has been a fantastic support and Shaun McWilliam, the president has been really good too.”
