HIGHLY-regarded former Perth WAFL mentor Damien McMahon has been unveiled as coach of GFL club Newtown & Chilwell.
McMahon, who played 120 games with the Eagles before heading West, will fill the role left vacant by Damien Christensen’s decision to stand down after just one season in charge due to work.
He was in the mix for the vacant job with WAFL club Claremont but was overlooked for the position.
“To have him come home, we’re rapt to have him,” president Shaun McWilliam.
“What he’s done the last 15 years, his credentials speak for themselves.
“He’s coached WAFL seniors, WA junior sides, and he got down to the final few at Claremont.”
McMahon was in charge of Perth from 2011 until being sacked in 2014.
He was most recently high performance manager at Claremont.
McMahon also coached Northam Railways in the Avon Football Association to two premierships, having headed west in 2002 as playing coach of Scarborough.
His initial term at Elderslie Reserve will be for two years, however McWilliam is hoping that it will be longer, with McMahon making three coaches in three seasons.
“It’s two years at the moment – that’s part of the constitution – but we’re seeking a but longer,” McWilliam said.
“We want to make this long-term. We need some stability.”
McMahon will meet with some of the Newtown & Chilwell playing group and football manager Terry Bright tomorrow before returning to Perth.
“He’s got a few things with work to finish up in WA, but we’re hoping to get him back at the start of pre-season,” McWilliam said.
“It may overlap a week or two, but it’ll be before Christmas, we think.”
