This weekend saw our three football teams travel to Colac for round two of the season.
The Colts started the day with a solid performance against a very accomplished Colac team. The team began slowly but as the game progressed the players adapted to the pressure in a high standard exhibition for under 18 football.
It was fantastic to be able to debut Ned HARRIS, son of Newtown duel premiership player and life time member Dean HARRIS, in the senior side.
The players in the 12pm game continued on from their performance in round one. The team is still developing with a number of new and young players continuing to adapt to how they connect and work together. The desire to win the ball and method of ball movement resulted in a high score being recorded, with many excellent individual performances on display. The development of a number of young players will continue to place pressure on players in the 2pm game.
In the late game we began with the assistance of a breeze and kicked the first four goals of the quarter. Our pressure and effort helped keep the momentum in our favour. We conceded one goal for the quarter which was a contested mark in the defensive goal square that could / should have been defended. The second quarter began with two goals to Colac, both direct results from our skill errors. The players steadied and we went to the half time break two goals up.
Unfortunately Tim O’KEEFE who was making his debut for Newtown suffered a medial ligament injury and was unable to play for the remainder of the game. Tim was holding down the centre half back position and was part of solid defence which had restricted Colac to only four first half goals. In the third quarter Jordan CRARER suffered a dislocated shoulder and was assisted from the ground. Jordan had been having great day on the wing showing enormous courage on several occasions marking the ball in defence. We lost momentum in the third quarter with skill errors a major factor. Overall we conceded too many stoppage goals and with skill errors high, the outcome was a loss by 27 points. We take a lot of learnings from this game and the players acknowledge that it was a lost opportunity to have a win against a quality opposition.
Thanks to Damien Christensen for filing this report.
