NEWTOWN & Chilwell coach Jason Woolley is no stranger to success, having achieved multiple premierships with GDFL club Winchelsea.
But even Woolley has been surprised by how quickly his new-look Eagles team has jelled this season.
Newtown continued its unbeaten start to the year with a comfortable 53-36 win over sixth-placed Bell Park on Saturday to sit on top of the GFL A-grade netball ladder.
"It has been pleasantly surprising, because you never know when you come into a new club how long it will take," Woolley said of the immediate connection of his playing group.
"The existing girls at Newtown were really open to the new ideas we were bringing in and the new girls have come in and really tried to teach them new things at training and in games, so every game is a learning experience as well."
Newtown's win on Saturday was again built around its intense all-court pressure, closing down Bell Park's space and forcing the Dragons into rushed options.
The Eagles two defenders on the last line, Madeleine Taylor and Amy Wirth, were standouts as Bell Park was restricted to only 36 goals.
"That is pretty much our view of the game, to keep the game tight defensively to at least put ourselves in a competitive position," Woolley said.
"We've still got a long way to go, it is only six games in.
"It is a really good comp and the thing that has stood out for me is that there are no easy games. Every week you have got to come to play or you will be made to pay.
"We've seen South Barwon and Leopold and they are outstanding teams, so we just have to keep improving."
