NEWTOWN & Chilwell has kept its September ambitions intact, bouncing back into finals contention from its worst defeat of the season with its biggest win, a 59-point domination of Colac, 21.10 (136) to 12.5 (77).
The Eagles fired hard early through a spread of goal kickers and were able to control the game under dim rain clouds after quarter time.
Post-match, Newtown & Chilwell coach Jacob Spolding laughed off suggestions that he was the architect of the team's 143-point turnaround over the break. Instead he handed credit to his players and the work they put into their preparations after their Round 6 thrashing by Bell Park.
"The boys spent a solid two weeks on the training track and after today's performance were able to implement on what was required which was really pleasing," Spolding said.
"The way we used the footy was really pleasing. Colac came off a great win last week but we were still able to get it off the line and into the space, which was good."
The improvement of recruit Ryan Gamble won over the crowd in the first half as the forward was able to set up half a dozen scoring opportunities across the Eagles' forward line before kicking three goals himself in a best on ground performance.
Gamble was joined by former Geelong Falcon Lachlan Edwards on the scorecard with three goals, while current Falcon Matthew Higgins stepped up to the occasion and displayed some consistent attacking efforts around the defensive stoppage.
However Spolding believed it was another forward, also with three goals to his name, who deserved some recognition.
"Matt McMahon played his role really well throughout the game, kicking goals and displaying quality teamwork," he said.
The defenders also earned praise for limiting their opposition to six goals by the final break.
Amongst Colac's best was former Hawthorn-listed player Lochlan Veale, who continued to use his size to advantage around the stoppages throughout the match. But despite the absence of Eagle Brad Ottens, still lacked the flair and intensity of his opponent, Sandy Robinson.
