NEWTOWN & Chilwell showed it is still a work in progress after slipping to a 0-2 start to the season with a shock loss to Leopold on Saturday.
With a number of boom recruits, including former Cats Max Rooke, Brad Ottens and Ryan Gamble, the Eagles gave up the ascendancy for the second week running as Leopold kicked seven goals to three in a last quarter blitz to win by 17 points.
Newtown & Chilwell coach Jacob Spolding said to have just five goals from 16 scoring shots at three quarter-time left the door open for Leopold.
"It was a disappointing result for us as we controlled the game for the majority of the contest," Spolding said. "We are getting enough ball in there, but unfortunately we are not kicking the goals, so that is something for us to work on."
Newtown looked like opening up the contest in the second term as it booted four goals, but Leopold was able to again strangle its run in the third term to trail by just 10 points going into the last term.
Spolding gave credit to Leopold after the game, claiming it played well to its structures all day.
