CLUB SAYS: "Our objective is to start the season really competitively and be extremely competitive against every team". - Senior Coach Simon Sutterby.
Newtown & Chilwell has targeted experienced players over the off-season as it looks to take the next step in 2010.
Jacob and Nick Spalding, Jay Bett, Rob Condy and Rick Wilde plus a list of others have signaled their intent to play at the Eagles this season which will provide great experience for the club.
Ben Robbins from Darley, Matt Hoe from Horsham, Dean Oakley plus Mark Laidler and Michael Stanley have joined from Ocean Grove.
Coach Simon Sutterby was pleased to have secured their signatures.
“They’re all good people, they work well together and will hopefully all gel together, it’s exciting.”
“They’re all pretty mature players; they’ll add good experience for us.”
Sutterby said the Eagles were changing their game style around this season but he wasn’t revealing too much.
“We just want to change it around a bit that’s all,” he said.
“What’s the definition of insanity when you keep doing the same thing for the same result, we haven’t had success for 24 years and something has to change.”
“Our objective is to start the season really competitively and be extremely competitive against every team.”
“We’ll look to continue to improve our culture and our brand of football.”
Last pre-season Newtown was without a home base for training and Sutterby said it has made a major difference this time around.
“This pre-season has been great, we’ve had a base since day one and it’s just amazing the difference it’s made.
“There are no issues and complaints now and it’s just a matter of us putting it out on the park now.”
ADDY SAYS
Dual VFL Premiership player Jacob Spalding has joined as assistant coach and returning spearhead Jay Bett, who won the league goalkicking with the Eagles back in 2004 will add height to the forward set-up. They will team up with Leigh Morrison, the Eagles leading goalkicker in 2009 to form an excellent attack. Coach Simon Sutterby also said ruckman Sandy Robinson, David Jelbart at centre-half back and captain Michael Bright were set for big seasons. A genuine top five contender.
