On Grand Final Day our U14's travelled to Woori to play the Emerald JFC in the 2009 season decider.
The seasons tally was 1 all as the Brookers beat the Bombers in Rd1 by 10pts at Emerald, but the Bombers bounced back to win the Thriller in the Mud in the SF1 (also at Emerald).
In one of the contests of the season it was the Brookers who got off to the better start kicking 2.1 in the first to Emerald's 1.2.
The Woori ground was in good condition which lead to a true contest, in the air and on the ground. Both sides were exerting extreme pressure on the ball carrier making clean possesion near impossible.
Just before half time the Brooker were up by 3 goals in a low scoring tight contest.
The Bombers managed a late goal to cut the margin to 2 straight kicks at the half time break.
GCJFC 5.2.32 to EJFC 3.2.20
In the 3rd ("The Premiership Quarter") the Bombers found some space and managed to outscore the Brookers and dominate general play, kicking 4.2 to the Brookers 2 straight goals.
This gave Emerald the 3 quarter time lead by 2pts and set up an epic last quarter.
EJFC 7.4.46 to GCJFC 7.2.44
In the last, with all players looked tired and the last having a lot more stoppages than the previous quarters made scoring a lot more difficult.
Emerald scored first setting up an 8 pt lead, but the Brookers bounced back soon after.
A couple of points followed for both sides and a long shot on goal by the Brookers landed in the goal square and broke right just missing.
With approx. 3 mins to go the scores were level, the ball was in the Brookers half forward area, several stoppages followed.
With 2 mins to go the Bombers broke clear and pushed forward for one last effort to break the deadlock.
Emerald managed a shot on goal which missed but scored a behind putting them 1 pt clear with approx. 90 seconds to go.
The kick in was taken quickly but Emerald were able to hold up play and a couple of stoppages followed, the Brookers cleared the next stoppage and were moving the ball down the wing when the siren sounded.
Heart break! Emerald wins by 1 pt, the smallest of margins.
EJFC 8.6.54 to GCJFC 8.5.53
The Brookers are devestated but held their heads high as they walk off the field to the award ceremony.
Congratulations to the whole team on a fantastic season.
A bitter sweet moment followed when Daniel Welsh #6 was awarded the "Best On Ground" by the League/Umpires.
To the players, remember if you win 4 quarters of footy in the one game you can not lose.
If you only win 3 out of 4 you can!
Be very proud of your acheivement! Good luck next season!
