Selection procedure

SELECTION PROCEDURE FOR SATURDAY TEAMS FOR COWRA DISTRICT SOCCER CLUB

PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND

The goal is to have teams as evenly matched as possible to ensure each team has a reasonable chance of being competitive throughout the year.  Primary consideration will be given to this. Other considerations that may be taken into account include social considerations such as playing with friends and playing with kids from a similar geographical location eg school, village or town.  Other considerations that will need to be considered include splitting children up who may have a particular reason that playing in the same team is undesirable eg legal reasons, family conflicts etc.  It is understood that despite all efforts from the Club, Committee and selection committee that there will always be winners and losers, and teams that end up being stronger than others.  All efforts will be taken to ensure equity and transparency in selection of teams and the club seeks involvement of all interested parties by becoming members of the Committee, attending meetings and nominating for the selection committee of various age groups.

GENERAL PROCEDURE

1)      A selection panel for each group will be elected at a regular committee meeting prior to the completion of the last registration day for Junior Soccer at the beginning of the year.  The selection panel will be made of 3 persons who have knowledge of the relevant age playing group.  The selection group must have at least one elected Cowra Soccer Committee member on the panel.  After the selection group has made team selections this is then to be ratified by the coaching coordinator and the Club President.  If the coaching coordinator or Club President has any concerns this will be brought back to the selection panel to fine tune team selections.  In the event of no consensus being reached it will be brought to a committee meeting for a solution to be sought.

2)      Nominations for the selection committee will be sought at the above mentioned committee meeting.   Nominations will need to be seconded and voted on at the meeting.  In the event of no nominations being received at this meeting responsibility will fall to the President, Coaching Co-coordinator and Registrar.

3)      It should be public knowledge who has been part of the selection process for each age group.  Any questions though in regard to selections are to be made to the committee by the secretary.  The selection panel is not to be approached directly in regard to selection issues.

PROCEDURE FOR SELECTION PANEL MAKING TEAM SELECTIONS.

1)      All members of the selection panel to have this procedure provided to them prior to a meeting being convened.  This procedure is to be read at the selection panel meeting to ensure everyone understands the procedure to be followed.  At the completion of the selection meeting each  member is to sign to indicate that the selection procedure was followed and that consensus was reached on team selections

2)       It is to be determined how many teams will be selected for each age group based on the numbers of players provided by the registrar.  It is to remembered that under 7&8’s have 7 players on the field,  under 10’s have 9 players on the field, under 12’s, 14’s and 16’s have 11 players on the field.   It is good practice to have around 2 reserves per team.  It should be anticipated that extra registrations will be taken after registration has closed who will need to be slotted into teams.  Generally speaking late registrations are less competent players; most keen and talented players will be organized prior to registration closing.

3)      The first selections made are by spreading the best players (graded 1) among the designated teams.  The second selections made will be made by spreading the next best players (graded 2) amongst the teams.   When doing this the age of the players will need to be considered.  For example a player who is 11 will have been graded against players in under 10's comp previously , while a player aged 12 will have played the year before and been graded against 12's comp. When spreading the graded 2 players social considerations are to be taken into consideration where possible,  but not to the detriment of equality.  The next selections are the next best players (grade 3) to be spread amongst the teams again social considerations where possible are to be taken into consideration (again not to the detriment of equality).  This is to be repeated until all selections are made.  Where a child is ungraded and nothing is known of their ability they should be graded as a grade 3 or 4.

4)      After this procedure is followed each team should be reviewed taking into account the selection panel’s expert knowledge of players to see if each team looks relatively equal.  If necessary shuffling should occur until consensus is reached that the teams are as equal as possible given all considerations.

5)      SPECIAL NOTE – this procedure is to be carried out in Canowindra using the players available to play who have nominated from Canowindra.  The teams selected are still to be presented to the President and Coaching Co-coordinator to be ratified as soon as possible after registration.

6)      The registrar is given authority to distribute late registrations amongst the teams evenly.  Any concerns should be brought to the coaching coordinator for consideration.

PROCEDURE TO MAKE TEAM ADJUSTMENTS ONCE SEASON HAS COMMENCED

1)      Any call to make adjustments to teams is to be received prior to round 4 of the season.  Call is to be made in writing stating reasons and directed to the secretary who will then bring it to the attention of the coaching coordinator.

2)      Grounds for adjustments may be social considerations eg irreconcilable differences between team members or family or coaching staff.  Other grounds for adjustment may be team numbers eg a team has too many players eg 4 reserves each week, or regularly very short of numbers.  Other grounds may be obviously grossly uneven results eg a team losing by 5 goals 3 weeks in a row, or a team winning by 5 goals 3 weeks in a row.

3)      The coaching coordinator will consider the request and make recommendations to the committee for consideration.  The committee will vote on any changes suggested by the coaching coordinator prior to the round 4.  If it is not possible to bring to a committee meeting at the discretion of the coaching coordinator a special meeting of the executive will be called to make a decision

PROCEDURE FOR GRADING PLAYERS

Purpose- Players are to be graded prior to the end of the season to facilitate selections for next season.  Grading is to be carried out by the coach of each team and is to be reviewed by the coaching coordinator prior to use the following year.  This grading is to be complete prior to the 1st Semi-final.

Grade 1-one of the top level players in Cowra.  Generally speaking each team may have 1-3 of these players in each team. (Would be one of player who plays representative or would be selected for representative if available).

Grade 2- a competent player who is above average.  Generally speaking would be possible to play local representative level but would be unlikely to be selected above this level.  Generally speaking may have ¼ of team at this level

Grade 3- a player who is slightly below average but can contribute, has basic level skills and speed but would never be considered for any representative duties. Commonly (1/4-1/2 team at this level).

Grade 4 – a novice player who is at the bottom end of the skills and speed level.  Commonly 1-3 players at this level in most teams.
