About Us

Brief History
Our club, the longest serving club in the Shire and arguably the best community based basketball club in the
district, was founded in 1972, now in its 51st year.

The club was based at the then Jannali Boy’s High School and had originally played in the St. George-Sutherland competitions in aged High School teams as Sutherland.

On May 14 through 18 1971 the school made a successful attempt on the World Marathon basketball record and played a game for some 105 hours in the old canteen, the gymnasium back then, in an effort to provide funds for the formation of the “Jannali Basketball Club”, which was successful. Rick De Leeuw, Scott McDonald, Dennis Nicholson, Brian Swayne, Ian Walsh, Tony Sadler, Gary Wainright, R. Butcher, Steven Sadler, Greg Campbell, David Linaker, Rein Vesilo, Des Leighton, Ian Ware, Bruce Marker, John Hill, Robert Khune, Ken Henderson, Reg Hahne, Phillip Gordon, Neil McLean, John Kowalczyk, Ian Anderson and Barrie Meadows all participated for the four epic days.

The club grew and attracted families from outside the school and junior girls entered our programmes in the
eighties.

The school basketball programme was extremely successful both locally and statewide entering many state
championships on behalf of the Association and providing many state and N.S.W. C.H.S. teams with its
representatives.

The school was one of the first High Schools in Australia to tour internationally, when, in 1978, enjoyed a fabulous tour of Canada and the United States with 24 students and three staff. These opportunities continue with the club boasting an active international and regional tours programme: 16 Jannali female juniors enjoyed the last tour in January 2008, which toured Hawaii, Canada and the U.S. In recent years junior coaches Matt Ismay and Jack Peters and some of their players had participated in week long live-in basketball camps at the Cascade Sports Camp out of Salem, Oregon in the Pacific North West of the U.S.A.

Incidentally, the club assumed its present colours from the Jannali High School, built in 1956, which adopted the Australian colours from that Olympic year, when the Olympics were conducted in Melbourne.

The club has a very proud record of supporting sport in the Shire of Sutherland for its families, has developed into a senior and junior men’s and women’s club, along with girls and boys catering for all ranges of playing abilities, ably supported by a very active team of club officials, motivated by their support for our youth.

As we enjoy our 51st year of operation, leading towards the 2023 winter season, with another great range of junior talent emerging, ably supported by a new Committee and a talented group of parent-coaches and managers, we wish them well in their sporting and personal ventures.

We are seeking sponsorships for the first time, an exciting exercise with Sutherland Podiatry the first to take up the offer.
