Coaching of teams in our Club is conducted by volunteers who give freely of their time to foster the sport of basketball.  Getting involved as a coach is an extremely rewarding experience as you see our players develop both their sporting abilities and their character as young people.

Coaching is a wonderful opportunity for:

  • parents to share their own skills (or in fact develop new skills and interests) with their child and his/her team mates;
  • our older experienced players to give back to the sport and Club that has helped develop them by sharing their skills and the Club culture they have helped shape; or
  • members of the community who are experienced in basketball and want to contribute to our Club and enhance the game of basketball to volunteer their services to coach.

Maintaining a pool of quality coaches is perhaps the greatest challenge facing any volunteer sporting organisation and Dragons is not immune to this challenge.  Instigating any new initiatives to help develop our Club and, in turn, our young players requires a team of professional coaches to ensure successful implementation.

Parents, current and former players and other interested people are welcome and encouraged to volunteer their coaching skills and contribute to building a successful and vibrant club well into the future.

You can volunteer to assist as:

  • a team coach or assistant coach;
  • BASKETBALL B.L.A.S.T. 6eleven station coach; or
  • a specialist coach in the extension of our B.L.A.S.T.program.

What’s in it for me?

Dragons and the Hills District PCYC provide membership and activity fee incentives for our volunteers.  Volunteer Status requires a demonstrated commitment to provide assistance and does not include any “ad hoc” casual assistance. Volunteers apply for Volunteer Status through our Club Committee.

As a volunteer with Volunteer Status you will receive:

  • Free Dragons Club membership;
  • Free PCYC membership for the calendar year of your commitment;
  • Free access to the PCYC gym equipment;
  • Free participation in your weekly training session (for current players);
  • A distinctive and exclusive coaching team uniform issued solely to coaches;
  • Reimbursement of the cost of obtaining your level 1 coaching certificate; and
  • The personal satisfaction of sharing your knowledge and ability with our players.

In return for these concessions, Dragons Basketball have an expectation that you will promote our Club’s values and undertake the responsibilities you have accepted with professionalism and diligence. Volunteers in our Club (committee, coaches and managers) are leaders and an example to parents, players and others of what our Club is about and what it is endeavouring to achieve in its vision. The best way to lead and inspire is by example and through the actions of our leaders.

What do I do from here?

Please do not hesitate to discuss volunteering for our Club with any of our committee or coaches.

To be eligible to coach, there will need to be an available position and your application must be accepted by the Committee. When your Dragons Application has been approved, we will liaise with you regarding an appropriate role and training time.

You will be required to complete:

The Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act 2000requires anyone over 18 seeking to work with children under 18 years of age to obtain a blue card.  Whilst there are certain exemptions for parents working with their own children, as a policy, Dragons Basketball Club requires all its coaches to hold a current blue card irrespective of their eligibility for exemption.  Obtaining a blue card is free for volunteer organizations.  Just complete the Blue Card Application Form, present it to the PCYC with appropriate identification for their witnessing, (check with the office that an authorized person will be present when you deliver your form) and wait for your application to be approved and your card to arrive.

If you wish to take advantage of the gym and activity fee concessions, you will need to complete a PCYC membership and have your card marked as a volunteer.

Thank you for your interest and we hope to see your application soon!

Please contact us if you have any questions.
