Former Dragons junior makes the NBL

Former Dragons junior, Phil Ahrens, has made his first appearance in the National Basketball League .. as a referee.

Phil began his basketball career playing for Dragons and Brisbane representative teams until he was 14.  He commenced refereeing at junior games ultimately being invited by the Brisbane Basketball Referees Association to officiate at various junior State and National championships.  He was ranked in the top two referees at various National tournaments.

After being invited to the QABL and ABA refereeing panels in his teens, Phil won the Southern Cross under 21 referee of the year in 2002 and 2003.  He began officiating WNBL games during the 2007 season and at age 22 was invited this year to join the NBL refereeing panel.  On Saturday 18 October, Phil officiated his first NBL game between Cairns Taipans and Gold Coast Blaze in Cairns.

The Dragons Committee and Club congratulate Phil on pursuing his career to the ultimate achievement.  He is living proof that you don’t need to be a world class player to achieve a career in basketball.
