ACT Basketball Board of Directors Elections

David Leaney (our current club President) has been elected President ACT Basketball. We would like to congratulate David on behalf of the club in his new position and thank him for the hard work and dedication with our club.

David has now resigned as President of our club and Terry Ryan (vice-president) will now be acting President until our next AGM.

Please find below an open letter from the newly elected President Mr. David Leaney to the Basketball community.

As newly elected President of Basketball ACT, I’m delighted to accept the position, and I look forward to a challenging and rewarding two years in the role.  I’d like to offer my congratulations and thanks to the current, previous, and outgoing members of the Board and management team.  B ACT is enjoying the highest participation rate ever for basketball in the ACT (6,232 players in 698 teams), has a very strong financial position, and a very exciting future.  Particular thanks go to previous President Mark White, acting President (and current Vice-President) Greg Evans, and outgoing CEO Tony Jackson.  I’m delighted to retain the knowledge and experience of Greg Evans, Brad Barnes, and Jerry Lee on the Board, and I congratulate and welcome new Board members Debbie Arsego and David Simpson.  The Board has a great balance of skills, experience, and fresh perspectives, including strong business and basketball knowledge.

The next two years will be critically important for basketball in the ACT.  We are growing and investing for the future.  We have a major investment planned with the redevelopment of the Belconnen stadium (the Capital Region Basketball Centre of Excellence) to add three international-standard courts, plus improved facilities.  We have exciting national events coming up, including the Under 18 Australian Junior Championships, Australian Schools Championships, and other major games and tournaments.  We are also investing in improved technology, business development, and community involvement.

The strategic themes for B-ACT and the Board will continue to include commercial, community, performance, and organisational excellence.  The Board will work together to build on the professionalism, participation, planning, financial strength, and governance of the sport.  There are many exciting challenges ahead, so let’s remember the basketball motto … “everyone’s game”.

David Leaney, President, Basketball ACT

P.S.        I love basketball, and have been involved in the sport for 45 years (since my first under 8’s tournament in 1969).  I am a keen (but untalented) player, coach, referee, manager, and former club president.  I still plan to play masters and coach juniors.  See you at the courts.
