Quake travelled to Canberra on Saturday to take on Boomerangs FS and had the best away day in the Club’s history winning 7 games, drawing 1 and suffering just the 1 loss. The 22 Club Championship points see us sitting comfortably in 3rd place in the Championship and close enough to 1st and 2nd to make things interesting over the final 3 rounds. Brief reports follow.

Academy

The Academy lads did very well this week. Unlike the first round, Boomerangs kept their 12 Boys for the competitive games which evened the field for our boys. The game was very close and in the end the honours were shared.

12 Boys won 5-2 (Angelo Kalamvokis 2, Adrian Neoklis 1, Matthew Khalil 1 & Jarrod Galea 1)

The boys got back to their winning ways this week. This was a professional performance with the boys never really getting in to top gear but playing enough good futsal to dominate the game comfortably. They remain on top of the ladder on goal difference.

12 Girls won 3-2 (Caitlin Orridge 1, Sheridan Gallagher 1, & Rachael Bagot 1)

This was a day of firsts for the girls with Caitlin opening the scoring with her first goal and Rachael scoring the winner with her first. Even though Boomerangs were much improved from the first round this wasn’t the girls’ best performance but the result showed that we don’t have to rely on just one or two players and that the younger girls are really starting to blossom. In the end, a good win and the girls are now just 1 more win away from making the finals.

14 Boys won 3-2 (Daniel Blachura 2 & George Tsokos 1)

A very good effort by the boys who had to rely on Yossi, Angelo and Matthew from the 12s to fill the bench due to so many players not making the trip. All the boys played well. Daniel really showed leadership today and was rewarded by scoring the winner with just minutes left on the clock. Credit to Nathan too today – he made some vital saves when needed.

14 Girls - Sponsored by JR Electrical – won 3-2 (Christina McGrath 1, Rosie Galea 1 and Amy Sayer 1)

The girls played some wonderful futsal in the 1st half but gave away a poor goal - again - and then missed chance after chance. Anson revved the girls up at half-time and they eventually scored 3 quick goals to take a well-deserved lead. They then let Boomerangs in with a chance by conceding another poor goal but dug deep, defended well and held on for a good win. The girls now have their fate in their own hands with games against teams in the top 4 over the last few rounds. Are they good enough to win these games and force their way into the finals?

16 Boys won 5-2 (Anthony Haddad 2, Harry Bagot 1, Trent Sierra 1 and Luke Perreria 1)

Much like the 12 Boys the lads went about their business calmly and professionally and worked their way to a 4-0 lead before easing off. But 2 quick goals to Boomerangs shook the lads up and they then had to go back to work to put the game away and soon scored their 5th to seal the win. Other results now see the lads 5 points clear at the top of the table with plenty of improvement left before the finals come around.

16 Girls - Sponsored by Macarthur Marble & Granite – win 1-0 (Rosie Galea 1)

A win!!!!!!!!!!!! At last, the first of the year - and didn’t they deserve it. After playing so well last week and getting nothing for it, and with 3 players unavailable, the girls could be forgiven for just turning up and going through the motions. But they didn’t and they worked their butts off again this week. In a tight game they defended well before a turnover in the first half fell to 13 year old Rosie Galea who raced to goal and calmly slotted the ball passed the ‘keeper. From then on it was all hands to the pump in defence and thanks to some great saves from Erin they were able to ride the Boomerangs’ waves of attack to get the win they so thoroughly deserved. They also got the biggest cheer of the day.

Youth won 3-1 (Connor Powers 1, Shannon Fielding 1 & Daniel Nelson 1)

The boys lost to Boomerangs in the first round so we didn’t know what to expect from this game. This was a close affair with the sides going into the break even at 0-0. Connor Powers, from our 16 Boys, was injected into the game and scored with his first touch after Enver’s shot was blocked. Boomerangs then evened the score from a fast break before Shannon put Quake back in front. The final few minutes were hectic after Boomerangs went 5th man. Daniel was able to prevent Symo having a heart attack when, with seconds to go, he won the ball at mid court and was able to run the ball into the empty net.

Women - Sponsored by Dunsheas United Realty – drew 3-3 (Claire Walsh 2 & Linda Dudek 1)

This game was very much a letdown after last week’s fantastic performance against Rovers. The girls’ had to rely on Claire dragging them back into the game after going behind early. At 2-3 down with just minutes left Shorty came on as 5th man and Quake were good enough to fashion an opening for Claire to score the equaliser. But you’d have to say the girls were lucky to get the point. To compound things, Lauren suffered a bad injury, fracturing her wrist. Everyone at the Club feels for her and we wish her a quick recovery.

Men lost 2-3 (Shayne Ardle 1 & Dean Lockhart 1)

At 2-1 up with 3 minutes to play this report was going to be about what a good, patient display this was and how well the boys had done. And then…………… just like that, following 2 bad lapses in concentration the game - and all 3 points - were gone. Such a pity as the lads had worked hard and probably earned the points. Shane Ardle was outstanding again this week.

Summary

It’s not often that you win the first seven games of the day and have a chance at a clean sweep, especially when you’ve travelled 2 ½ to 3 hours to play. We almost did it and we are so proud of the players and their families for their efforts, and the results they earned, on this trip. Saturday’s efforts were a true Purple Heart display.

The Premier League breaks now for the Christmas/New Year celebrations and returns on Saturday, 11 January.

We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New year and hope you enjoy the celebrations with you family and friends.

As always……GO QUAKE!
